Player Outlook
One of the biggest surprises in football last year was the downfall of the Eagles defense. They were a top-five DST in Fantasy Football in 2022 and fell outside the top 20 in 2023. The man tasked with fixing that will be Vic Fangio, a coach who has led many dominant defenses in the past, though recently the results have been more uneven. The Eagles used their first three picks on defensive players in the 2024 NFL Draft including cornerbacks in Round 1 and Round 2. We are cautiously optimistic and rank the unit as a top-10 option worthy of a pick in the final two rounds of Fantasy drafts.

  • Eagles' Isaiah Rodgers: Showing no rust

Rodgers, who missed the entire 2023 season due to a suspension for violating the NFL's gambling policy, has been one of Philadelphia's most impressive players this offseason, Tim McManus of ESPN reports. Rodgers doesn't seem to have slowed down at all despite being a year removed from the NFL field, with teammate A.J. Brown saying "he's flying around, and he's going to do special stuff for us this year." McManus reports that Rodgers will be in position to compete for a starting spot at outside corner opposite Darius Slay during training camp, primarily vying with Kelee Ringo and rookie first-round pick Quinyon Mitchell for the role.

  • Shaquille Leonard: Wants new team, open to retirement

Leonard said he wishes to sign with a new team and play during the 2024 NFL season, but that he'd be at peace with calling it a career if no opportunity presents itself, Kyle Smeldy of the Indianapolis Star reports. Leonard, a three-time All-Pro, posted 88 tackles in 14 regular-season games split between the Colts and Eagles in 2023, his comeback after a 2022 campaign plagued by injuries. Though he's remained a free agent throughout OTAs and mandatory minicamps, Leonard said he's staying in shape and waiting for an opportunity to sign, while leaving open the possibility of retirement. "If it happens, it happens," Leonard said. "If it don't, it don't. I think throughout my career I've had a great career, even if I do step away from it."

  • Eagles' Darius Slay: Back for minicamp

Slay (back) was spotted practicing at Thursday's minicamp session, Cayden Steele of NJ.com reports. The 33-year-old cornerback was carted off the field with a back injury during the Eagles' wild-card loss to the Buccaneers, but it now seems as if he's moved past the issue. Slay, a six-time Pro-Bowler, defended 14 passes, including two interceptions, in just 12 games last season. Now that Slay has returned to form, he's expected to serve as the Eagles' top corner once again in 2024.

  • Eagles' James Bradberry: Dealing with injury

Bradberry was absent from the Eagles' minicamp session Thursday after sustaining an undisclosed injury Tuesday, Martin Frank of The Delaware News Journal reports. The ninth-year veteran is dealing with an unspecified injury that's kept him out of mandatory minicamp, but there's no word on the severity as of now. Bradberry had a down year after receiving All-Pro honors in 2022, and he's expected to remain an integral part of Philadelphia's secondary once he moves past this issue.

  • Eagles' James Bradberry: Getting moved around

Bradberry has been seeing work at safety during practices this week, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Bradberry has also been seeing work inside at slot cornerback, as head coach Nick Sirianni is looking to take advantage of his versatility. With rookie first-round pick Quinyon Mitchell penciled in as a starter at corner opposite Darius Slay (back), the 30-year-old Bradberry may lose his starting gig after struggling in 2023. The Eagles have been testing Bradberry and second-round pick Cooper DeJean at different spots in the secondary, plus they have 28-year-old nickel corner Avonte Maddox hoping to rebound from back-to-back injury-marred seasons. The secondary was arguably Philadelphia's weakest position group last year but could be a strength for new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

  • Eagles' Cooper DeJean: Embracing versatility

DeJean is being exposed to more than one position in the offseason, Brooks Kubena of The Athletic reports. Kubena further reported that Eagles pass game coordinator Christian Parker said DeJean "can handle it mentally" and might "have a home" by training camp. The 2023 All-American at Iowa played cornerback, safety and a hybrid linebacker/defensive back role during his college career.

  • Eagles' Nakobe Dean: Overcomes foot issue

Dean (foot) was a full participant in OTAs on Wednesday, Brooks Kubena of The Athletic reports. Dean had an injury-riddled 2023 season, headlined by a foot issue that forced him to miss the final seven games of the campaign. Now that he's back on the field and participating fully in OTAs, Dean looks to be back to full strength. Across his two seasons in the NFL, Dean has appeared in 22 games and tallied 43 total tackles while playing 216 defensive snaps. The Georgia product is expected to be one of Philadelphia's top inside linebackers heading into the 2024 season.

  • Eagles' Isaiah Rodgers: Restrictions lifted

Rodgers was reinstated by the NFL on Tuesday after he was suspended for the 2023 season for violating the NFL's gambling policy, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Rodgers was originally suspended in June of 2023 after making bets on NFL games, which led to him being waived by the Colts. Despite the suspension, the UMass product inked a new deal with the Eagles two months later. With his suspension lifted, Rodgers will now be able to participate in all team activities for the first time since he signed with Philadelphia.

  • Eagles' Nakobe Dean: Nearing return

Dean (foot) said Thursday that he's been out of his walking boot since February, Zach Berman of The Athletic reports. Dean has been dealing with a foot injury that forced him to miss Philadelphia's final seven games last season, but it sounds like he could be returning to the field soon. Dean logged 30 total tackles, including 0.5 sacks throughout his five appearances in 2023, and the 23-year-old is expected to remain one of the Philadelphia's top inside linebackers once his recovery from Lisfranc surgery is complete.

  • Eagles' Avonte Maddox: Returns to Philly

Maddox and the Eagles agreed to terms Thursday on a one-year contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Maddox has only suited up for 13 regular-season games over the past two years, including just four in 2023 due to a torn pectoral muscle. It makes sense for both sides to reunite on a more team friendly deal now, with Maddox getting a chance to return to form in a familiar system before testing free agency again next offseason. The 28-year-old is capable of contributing at a high level as a nickel corner when healthy.

  • Eagles' Reed Blankenship: Underwent successful surgery

Blankenship is fully recovered from surgery to repair a groin injury that he suffered Week 18, Brooks Kubena of The Athletic reports. Blankenship signed a one-year extension with the Eagles on Monday after a 2023 campaign that saw him record a team-leading 113 combined tackles despite playing just 15 regular-season games. "It feels good now not being as sore anymore like I did this past season dealing with it," the safety said Tuesday, insinuating the injury was affecting him before his Week 18 exit. A healthy Blankenship should be a key piece of the Eagles secondary in 2024.

  • Eagles' Reed Blankenship: Gets one-year extension

The Eagles signed Blankenship (groin) to a one-year contract extension Monday. Blankenship led Philadelphia in tackles (113 total, 79 solo) and interceptions (three) last season while suiting up for 15 regular-season games, so it makes complete sense for the team to extend him through 2025. A groin injury kept Blankenship from suiting up for the Eagles' wild-card loss to the Buccaneers, but given that his status for that contest came down to the wire, the safety should be fully healthy for the start of offseason workouts.

  • Jets' Haason Reddick: Headed to Jets

The Jets acquired Reddick from the Eagles on Friday in exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Per the report, Reddick is expected to agree to a new contract with the Jets, who will reportedly absorb $14.5 million of the edge rusher's salary for the 2024 season. With the move, the Jets add a player who can provide a nice boost to the team's pass rush, on the heels of a 2023 campaign in which Reddick racked up 38 tackles and 11 sacks in 17 regular-season contests with Philadelphia.

  • Eagles' Tyler Hall: Finds new opportunity

Hall signed a contract with the Eagles on Wednesday. Hall bounced between the Raiders' active roster and practice squad last season, appearing in 11 regular-season games. The Wyoming product recorded 20 tackles while seeing 155 snaps on defense and 83 special teams. He'll likely be working in a similar role with Philadelphia in 2024 if he makes the roster.

  • Eagles' Josh Sweat: Restructures deal

The Eagles restructured Sweat's contract ahead of the 2024 season Friday, Cayden Steele of NJ.com reports. The 26-year-old defensive end's restructured contract allows him to make up to $13 million in 2024, with $10 million guaranteed, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com. Sweat saw a dip in production last season compared to the previous two years, but he was still fairly impactful nonetheless. The Florida State product appeared in all 17 of the Eagles' regular-season outings, logging 43 total tackles, including 6.5 sacks. Sweat is expected to remain one of the most productive players on Philadelphia's defense in 2024.

  • Bills' Nicholas Morrow: Lands with Buffalo

Morrow is set to sign a one-year deal with the Bills, Mike Garafolo of NFL Networkreports. Morrow enjoyed a successful 2023 campaign that saw him start 11 games for the Eagles while Nakobe Dean tended to a foot injury. The 28-year-old amassed 95 combined tackles, including 3.0 sacks, and five passes defended. He'll likely fill a depth role in the Bills' linebacker corps behind Terrel Bernard in the middle.

  • Bears' Kevin Byard: Finds work in Chicago

Byard and the Bears agreed Sunday on a two-year, $15 million contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. In Chicago, Byard should settle in as the team's starting free safety as a replacement for Eddie Jackson, whom the Bears released in February. Between stops with the Titans and Eagles last season, Byard recorded a career-high 122 tackles in 16 games, but the historically ball-hawking defensive back recorded just two turnovers (one interception, one fumble recovery). Heading into his age-31 season in 2024, Byard's best years are most likely behind him, but his addition should still help bolster a Bears secondary that was often leaky in 2023.

  • Fletcher Cox: Brings end to productive career

Cox announced Sunday via his personal Instagram account that he has retired from professional football. A 2012 first-round draft pick, Cox spent his entire 12-year career in Philadelphia. The 33-year-old was one of the standout defensive tackles of his era, earning six Pro Bowl nods and a spot on the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team. The Mississippi State product finished his career with 519 total tackles, 70 sacks, 16 forced fumbles, 14 fumble recoveries and three touchdowns over 188 regular-season contests.

  • Eagles' Brandon Graham: Returning for 15th season

Graham signed a one-year extension with the Eagles on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The extension will act as a farewell tour of sorts for Graham, who is expected to retire following his 15th professional season. The pass rusher played his fewest snaps in a healthy season since 2013, but he's still a solid enough rotational piece, as the 35-year-old tallied 3.0 sacks in 2023 and a stunning 11.0 the year prior, when he reprised a similar rotational role.

  • Eagles' Brandon Graham: Likely staying in Philadelphia

Graham expects to be back with the Eagles in 2024 as the two sides continue working on a new deal, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Graham has spent all 14 years of his NFL career with the Eagles, and he's expected to extend his stay in Philadelphia this offseason. Across 17 regular-season games in 2023, Graham recorded 16 total tackles, including 3.0 sacks, and one defended pass. The 35-year-old has seen a consistent decrease in production over the last couple years, but he's still expected to serve as a solid rotational defensive end going forward.
