Player Outlook
The Bills defense is a starting unit worthy of a draft pick in the final two rounds on Draft Day. The team added safety Cole Bishop (Round 2) and defensive tackle DeWayne Carter (Round 3) in the 2024 NFL Draft and have veteran linebacker Matt Milano coming back after playing just five games last season. The Bills did lose Tre'Davious White and Jordan Poyer to free agency, so the back end of the defense could be a bit of a concern. Don't reach for this defense and don't plan on holding them against tough matchups, but they should rank as a top-12 option at home in Week 1 against Arizona.

  • Bills' Kaiir Elam: Entering important third season

Elam received extra reps throughout the spring due to veteran Rasul Douglas missing the voluntary OTA sessions, Chris Brown of the Bills' official site reports. Elam hasn't quite panned out yet as a first-round draft choice from 2022, but all the talk around the Bills this offseason seems to indicate the team is going to give him a fair crack at playing time in 2024. He's currently listed as a backup behind Douglas (who did show up for all non-voluntary work) and holdover Christian Benford, but with Tre'Davious White departing to the Rams, there's a real chance for Elam to see meaningful playing time, whether as a key backup or even sneaking his way into a starter's role.

  • Bills' Mike Edwards: Limited during minicamp

Edwards (shoulder) was a limited participant during practice Tuesday, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports. Edwards missed OTAs in May with the injury, so his ability to participate at any level should be a sign of progress. Acquired in March on a one-year deal, the Kentucky product is expected to be the Bills' starter at free safety in 2024.

  • Bills' Matt Milano: Limited at minicamp

Coach Sean McDermott said Milano (leg) will be limited at Tuesday's practice, Katherine Fitzgerald of The Buffalo News reports. Milano is working his way back from a right leg fracture, and while McDermott said earlier this offseason that it likely won't be until training camp that he participates in drills, it's encouraging to see the veteran already practicing in a limited capacity. The standout linebacker appears on a good track to be ready for Week 1 of the 2024 season, barring any setbacks.

  • Bills' Von Miller: Healthy ahead of 2024 campaign

Miller has been participating in OTAs without the use of a brace on his surgically repaired right knee, Alec White of the Bills' official site reports. "That's something I could not do last year," Miller said after Tuesday's practice. The 35-year-old Miller hasn't played more than 12 regular-season games since 2019, as he's battled serious knee and ankle injuries in the final years of a Hall-of-Fame-worthy career. While Miller is no longer a threat for double-digit sack totals, he still has the ability to provide a major boost to Buffalo's pass rush, even as a rotational piece on the edge.

  • Bills' Cole Bishop: Inks first pro deal

Buffalo signed Bishop and seven other players to rookie contracts Tuesday, Chris Jenkins of the Bills' official site reports. Bishop, defensive lineman DeWayne Carter, running back Ray Davis, offensive lineman Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio, defensive end Javon Solomon, tackle Tylan Grable and cornerback Daequan Hardy all signed their deals Tuesday, leaving second-round wideout Keon Coleman as the last rookie to sign. As for Bishop, he has a good chance to be the team's No. 3 safety behind Taylor Rapp and Mike Edwards following a standout career at Utah.

  • Bills' Mike Edwards: Misses Tuesday's session

Edwards sat out Tuesday's OTA session due to a shoulder issue, Alec White of the Bills' official site reports. The Bills haven't indicated that Edwards' injury is anything serious, so he'll likely be back on the field by the time training camp opens in the summer. After signing a one-year deal in March, Edwards has a good chance of starting at free safety with Buffalo having thus far not made an effort to re-sign longtime secondary mainstay Micah Hyde, who is currently without a team and is a question mark to return to football due to long-time neck issues. Even if Hyde does return to the Bills, the younger and healthier Edwards may be the team's preferred starter anyway.

  • Bills' Matt Milano: Recovering as scheduled

Milano (leg) is on schedule in his recovery from a fractured leg, Dan Fetes of 13WHAM reports. Milano is still in recovery mode, and he likely won't participate in drills until closer to training camp, coach Sean McDermott indicated this week. However, as long as the linebacker stays on schedule, he should be ready to go when Week 1 of the 2024 campaign begins.

  • Bills' Dee Delaney: Signs with Buffalo

The Bills signed Delaney on Thursday, Nick Wojton of BillsWire.com reports. With Jordan Poyer having been poached by Miami and Micah Hyde eyeing retirement, Buffalo is understandably scrambling to restock at safety ahead of the season. Delaney recorded 25 tackles (17 solo) and two interceptions with Tampa Bay last year.

  • Micah Hyde: May play with Bills in 2024

Hyde has said he will either sign with Buffalo for 2024 or retire before the start of next season, Nick Sabato of the Niagara Gazette reports. Hyde has been considering retiring from football since the Bills were eliminated by the Chiefs from the postseason back in January. Former running mate Jordan Poyer departed for Miami in March, so if Hyde does come back to Buffalo for one more year, he would likely be in line for a significant role.

  • Bills' Baylon Spector: Fighting for top reserve role

Spector (back) is expected to compete with Dorian Williams for Buffalo's top backup role at linebacker, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports. Spector appears to be recovered from the back injury that ended his 2023 season early, and his spot on the 53-man roster heading into training camp appears secure due to his standing as a key special-teams contributor. Because of his draft capital as a 2023 third-round pick, Williams will likely be the favorite to win the top backup role this offseason, but Spector could have a solid chance to earn more opportunities if he can impress in workouts.

  • Bills' Greg Rousseau: Has option picked up

The Bills will exercise Rousseau's 2025 fifth-year team option, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports. The 24-year-old was the 30th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and has 17 sacks through three seasons as a 46-game starter for Buffalo. Rousseau played a career-high 585 defensive snaps last season. The Bills need Rousseau, A.J. Epenesa and veteran Von Miller to key their pass rush in 2024 after notably only adding fifth-round rookie Javon Solomon off the edge and losing Leonard Floyd's 10.5 sacks in free agency.

  • Bills' Daequan Hardy: Heading to Buffalo

The Bills selected Hardy in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, 219th overall. The Bills targeted an interesting project at cornerback with the Hardy selection. Hardy never carved out a starting job at Penn State and will turn 23 in June, but he also played 48 games in Happy Valley. He's small at 5-foot-9 and 179 pounds, meaning he'll work exclusively out of the slot. At the same time, he has 4.38 speed and had a 42.5-inch vertical at the combine. Hardy also had two punt return touchdowns in 2023, which takes the sting out of the Bills losing Deonte Harty this offseason.

  • Bills' DeWayne Carter: Lands with Buffalo

The Bills selected Carter in the third round of the NFL Draft, 95th overall. Buffalo needed a youth infusion in the middle of the defense coming into the draft, and Carter provides that. A Duke product, Carter was a decorated player during his time in Durham, earning third-, second-, and first-team All-ACC honors. He is a squat defensive tackle that is hard to move at 6-foot-2 and 302 pounds who fires off the ball. His most disruptive season came in 2022, when he had 11.0 tackles for loss, including 5.5 sacks. and while his statistics fell off a bit in 2023, he still put together a strong season. He projects to be the heir apparent to DaQuan Jones alongside Ed Oliver.

  • Bills' Rasul Douglas: Key acquisition in 2023

Douglas posted 61 tackles, 1.0 sacks, 14 passes defensed, five interceptions, a pick-six and three fumble recoveries over 16 regular-season games in 2023 split between the Packers and Bills. Buffalo acquired Douglas from Green Bay in a Halloween trade, and the veteran played a key role in helping the Bills turn around their season and win a fourth straight AFC East title. With Buffalo losing several key pieces this offseason, Douglas will remain a clear-cut starter in the secondary and locker room leader entering his eighth NFL season. He's had four-plus picks in each of the last three seasons.

  • Bills' Greg Rousseau: Ready for next step?

Rousseau completed the 2023 regular season with 42 tackles (including 5.0 sacks), four passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Rousseau saw a career-high snaps on defense (558), so perhaps it's a bit disappointing that he fell eight tackles short of his rookie season and 3.0 sacks short of the career-high 8.0 he posted in 2022. With the playoff perennial Bills facing so much turnover on both sides of the ball, the 2021 first-rounder may be expected to hit another gear if the team is to take a fifth straight AFC East title. A.J. Epenesa has already proven capable of helping Rousseau with the pass rush on the other side of the line, but everyone could gain if Von Miller, who's missed significant time the past two seasons, can consistently spark the pass rush.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Coming off best season

Oliver finished the 2023 regular season with 51 tackle (including 9.5 sacks), three passes defensed and one interception in 16 games. All of those figures were a career high or tied for a career high for the 2019 first-rounder, while the 9.5 sacks were particularly noteworthy considering he is an interior lineman. Oliver and DaQuan Jones will continue to lead one of the stronger units on the team. The Bills did lose quite a bit of depth in the offseason and will probably draft a defensive lineman this weekend, but no one will enter the fray to meddle with Oliver's projected playing time, plus the Bills need a wide receiver (or two) more than any other position. If your league forces you to have a spot for both defensive ends and tackles, Oliver is one of the league's better IDP choices for the latter slot.

  • Bills' Christian Benford: Should enter summer work as starter

Benford (knee) finished the 2023 regular season with 54 tackles, 10 passes defensed, two interceptions, two forced fumbles an a fumble recovery over 15 games. The Bills cut longtime starter Tre'Davious White in the offseason for cap purposes, leaving Benford (who started 14 regular-season games last season) and Rasul Douglas as the likely starters entering the next campaign, though the do-it-all Taron Johnson often sees work as a corner. Buffalo is out of cap space and seems likely to draft a receiver with its first-round pick, so perhaps the only real competition for Benford's job during training camp will come from 2022 first-rounder Kaiir Elam, a player that's disappointed to date and saw action in only three regular-season games last season. Benford did miss the team's playoff loss to the Chiefs due to a knee injury, though there's no word that his summer participation is under any sort of risk.

  • Micah Hyde: Still considering retirement

Bills' GM Brandon Bean told reporters Thursday that he spoke with Hyde on Wednesday and the safety is still mulling retirement, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports. Rumors about Hyde retiring began circulating toward the end of January, and he still has not made his decision. The 33-year-old has appeared in just 16 games over the past two seasons for the Bills, recording 61 total tackles and defending seven passes, including two interceptions. Hyde, who's currently a free agent, would likely have a handful of suitors if he chooses to play in 2024.

  • Bills' Terrel Bernard: Moves past ankle issue

Bernard, who missed the Bills' Jan. 21 playoff loss to the Chiefs due to an ankle injury, feels very good health-wise at this stage of the offseason, Sal Capaccio of WGR Sports Radio 550 Buffalo reports. Prior to suffering his injury in the Bills' wild-card win over the Steelers on Jan. 15, Bernard racked up 143 tackles, 6.5 sacks and three interceptions in 17 regular-season contests. Now that his ankle has had time to heal up, the 2022 third-rounder is set to reprise his role as Buffalo's starting middle linebacker, which puts the 24-year-old in a position to remain a viable lineup option in IDP formats this coming season.

  • Giants' Jordan Phillips: Picked up by Giants

The Giants signed Phillips (wrist) on Thursday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Phillips spent the last two years of his career with the Bills, and he'll stay in New York after agreeing to terms with the Giants. The veteran defensive lineman has appeared in 26 games over the past two seasons, recording 35 total tackles and four sacks. Phillips missed the Bills' final three games of the regular season as well as a pair of playoff games after sustaining a wrist injury, but he should be good to go for the start of the Giants' offseason program.
