Player Outlook
Cody Poteet had Tommy John surgery in August 2022 after logging a 3.86 ERA in 12 appearances (two starts) for the Marlins that year. He made seven starts for Miami the prior year as a rookie and struggled to a 4.99 ERA. The 29-year-old righty was released by the Royals in December and signed a one-year, $750,000 deal with the Yankees in January. He didn't make the rotation out of camp, but Poteet made a spot start April 13 and then joined the rotation in June following Clarke Schmidt's shoulder injury. The Yankees have some decent pitching prospects in the upper levels of the minors, but Poteet represents a steadier hand. He throws a 93-94 mph fastball over half the time while mixing in two breaking balls and a changeup. Poteet's top trait, now that he is 22 months removed from surgery, is his ability to fill up the zone, as he has a strong 8.1 percent walk rate at Triple-A and a stingy 2.4 percent walk rate through two MLB starts.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Out with strained triceps

The Yankees placed Poteet on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right triceps strain, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Poteet will be shut down from throwing for up to two weeks before being re-evaluated. He's fared well in four starts with the Yankees this season, posting a 2.14 ERA and 13:7 K:BB over 21 innings. However, with Gerrit Cole (elbow) due back this week, Poteet's future role was already looking uncertain.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Goes 5.1 frames in victory

Poteet (3-0) earned the win over Kansas City on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two batters over 5.1 innings. Poteet was staked to a 6-0 lead after one inning and cruised through five scoreless frames before the Royals scored their first two runs in the sixth. The right-hander had plenty of cushion at that point and ended up with his third victory across four starts. Poteet has completed six innings just once in those outings, but he's put up a great 2.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP despite a not-so-great 13:7 K:BB over 21 innings.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Inefficient in no-decision

Poteet came away with a no-decision in Friday's 2-1 extra-innings loss to the Dodgers, allowing two hits and three walks over 4.2 scoreless innings. He struck out one. The 29-year-old right-hander kept a dangerous offense off the board, but he needed 84 pitches (50 strikes) to record only 14 outs, and the Yankees' bullpen eventually faltered in the 11th inning. Poteet has a 1.72 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB through 15.2 innings over his three big-league starts this season, but with Gerrit Cole (elbow) set to make his second rehab start Sunday, Poteet's time in the New York rotation is running short. He should make at least one more start, which lines up to come on the road next week in Kansas City.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Getting second start

Poteet is scheduled to start Friday's game against the Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander will be making his third start of the season for the Yankees and his second straight turn through the rotation. He struck out six over five innings while allowing three runs (two earned) in a winning effort against the Giants last Saturday following his call-up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Unless the Yankees get hit by another injury in their rotation, Poteet's stay in the majors will likely come to an end once Gerrit Cole (elbow) makes his expected return from the 60-day injured list later this month.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Activated, called up ahead of start

Poteet (finger) was activated from the minor-league 7-day injured list and called up to start Saturday's contest versus the Giants. Poteet is officially set to make his second major-league start of the season Saturday, replacing Clarke Schmidt (lat) on the mound for the Yankees. The right-handed Poteet last pitched with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on May 19, allowing three runs over four innings before missing his last outing with a blister. Poteet drew his first start with New York on April 13, tossing six innings of one-run ball while striking out four in a win over the Guardians. It's unclear if the Yankees view Poteet as a long-term replacement for Schmidt, who's expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks, but a strong outing Saturday would certainly make that a possibility.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Set to start Saturday

Poteet (finger) will be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Saturday's game against the Giants, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Poteet has been dealing with a blister and is currently on the Triple-A club's 7-day injured list, but he'll be healthy and ready to join the big club to make a start in place of Clarke Schmidt (lat). Poteet threw four innings in his last outing May 19 and has worked in a regular starting role with Scranton/Wilkes Barre this season, so he should be able to handle a normal workload. The Yankees haven't formally announced their plans beyond Saturday, but Poteet should have the chance to stick in the rotation until Gerrit Cole (elbow) is back from the 60-day injured list.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Lands on Triple-A's IL

Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre placed Poteet on its 7-day injured list Thursday with an unspecified injury. Poteet possesses a spot on the Yankees' 40-man roster, but aside from making a six-inning spot start with the big club April 13 in Cleveland, he's spent the entire 2024 season at Triple-A. Over seven starts for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Poteet has pitched to a 4.05 ERA and 1.12 WHIP while striking out 38 batters over 33.1 innings. The nature and extent of his injury is unclear, but it'll take him out of consideration for a call-up to the Yankees in the short term if the team needs a spot starter.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Making spot start Saturday

Poteet will be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Cleveland, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. Saturday's contest was postponed due to inclement weather, which will afford Poteet the opportunity to make a spot start in Saturday's twin bill. The right-hander has pitched well in two starts for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season with two runs allowed and a 12:2 K:BB over 8.1 innings. Poteet should serve as the 27th player for the doubleheader, which likely means he'll promptly be sent back to Triple-A.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Optioned to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Poteet to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday. The right-hander was an outside candidate for New York's rotation after Gerrit Cole went down with an elbow injury, but Luis Gil ended up winning the job. Poteet pitched well in camp with a 2.35 ERA and 7:1 K:BB over 7.2 innings and could fill a bullpen role later on for the Yankees if he gets off to a strong start at Triple-A.

  • Yankees' Cody Poteet: Gets MLB deal from Yankees

Poteet signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Yankees on Thursday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Poteet had Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, making it back last year for one late-season appearance with Triple-A Omaha in the Royals organization. The 29-year-old holds a career 4.45 ERA and 53:27 K:BB across 58.2 frames at the major-league level. Poteet has options remaining and seems likely to begin the 2024 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • Cody Poteet: Released by Royals

Poteet was released by the Royals on Saturday. Poteet signed a minor-league deal last winter after having Tommy John surgery and made it back for one late-season appearance with Triple-A Omaha. The Royals decided not to keep him through the offseason, so the 29-year-old righty will look for a new organization.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Removed from 40-man roster

Poteet (elbow) was activated off the 60-day injured list and outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Poteet may no longer be on the injured list, but he won't be healthy any time soon, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in August and will likely miss the entire 2023 season. No team wanted to claim him and wait out his recovery, so he'll continue to rehab as a member of the Marlins organization.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Shifts to 60-day IL

Poteet (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Sunday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet landed on the shelf with elbow inflammation Friday, and he'll now be sidelined until late September, if not the rest of the season. The right-hander has a 3.86 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB across 28 innings this year.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Heads to injured list

Poteet was placed on the injured list Friday with right elbow inflammation, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. It's not exactly clear when Poteet picked up the injury, but he will be unavailable for the time being. Jordan Holloway was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville to take Poteet's place in Miami's bullpen.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Works in relief in return from IL

Poteet was charged with five earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out one in two innings out of the bullpen in Saturday's 10-0 loss to the Phillies. Poteet had been serving as a starter for Miami prior to landing on the injured list May 29 with an elbow injury, but he looks set to work out of the bullpen moving forward with Braxton Garrett and Max Meyer having seemingly settled into back-end spots in the rotation.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Reinstated from IL

Poteet (elbow) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet will return to the Marlins after he missed over a month of action while nursing an elbow issue. He'll look to build on the 2.42 ERA and 1.04 WHIP he posted over 26 innings in 11 appearances, including two starts prior to getting hurt in late May.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Rehab shifting to Triple-A

Poteet (elbow) will move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Poteet began his rehab assignment at Single-A Jupiter on Monday and struck out four in two scoreless innings. It's not yet clear how many innings he'll throw Friday, but it's encouraging to see him advancing to the Triple-A level, which could represent the final step in his recovery process.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Completes side session

Poteet (elbow) tossed a 20-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The Marlins will likely check back in with Poteet on Wednesday before determining whether he needs another bullpen session or if he's ready to resume facing hitters in live batting practice. Poteet made two turns through the rotation as Miami's fifth starter before being placed on the 15-day injured list May 29 with a right elbow muscle injury.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Set to throw this weekend

Poteet (elbow) will start a throwing program this weekend, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Earlier this week he was cleared to play catch on flat ground, and it's unclear if that's what he'll be doing this weekend or if he will be throwing from a mound. Either way, Poteet may be brought along slowly given the nature of his elbow muscle injury.

  • Marlins' Cody Poteet: Resumes flat-ground work

Marlins manager Don Mattingly disclosed Monday that Poteet (elbow) has been cleared to play catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Poteet has been on the 15-day injured list since May 29 with a right elbow muscle injury and will likely need at least a couple more weeks to get stretched back out before the Marlins consider activating him. Whenever Poteet is ready to go, he may have to settle for a spot in the bullpen or in the Triple-A Jacksonville rotation if back-end starters Edward Cabrera and Braxton Garrett have performed well enough to maintain roles with the big club.
