Player Outlook
Miguel Vargas ran out of chances with the Dodgers and was traded to the White Sox at the deadline. It was a big change from one end of the competitive spectrum to the other and he might have been in shock if his numbers following the move are any indication (.104/.217/.170 in 157 plate appearances). He's still just 25 years old, but Vargas has lost whatever shine he had as a prospect. At least he maintained his patience amidst his struggles and continued to walk roughly 10 percent of the time last season. The White Sox are evaluating for the future and figure to give Vargas, who's out of minor-league options, another look at third base to see if there might be anything there. Even on the South Side, the leash probably won't be very long.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Strong start from leadoff spot

Vargas went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored Thursday against the Angels. Vargas was slotted into the leadoff spot and had a successful audition to keep the role. He tallied a two-run double in the second inning and then singled before coming around to score six frames later. Vargas has yet to find much traction at the big-league level, though the White Sox should afford him plenty of playing time to prove himself at in 2025.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Viewed as primary third baseman

White Sox manager Will Venable said Monday that he views Vargas as the team's primary option at third base, James Fegan of Sox Machine reports. Vargas is working out a bit at first base this spring, too, and he has plenty of past experience at second base and in left field. However, it sounds like he will focus on the hot corner in 2025. Vargas has managed just a .175/.273/.312 batting line at the major-league level and slashed just .104/.217/.170 in 42 games with the White Sox last season after being acquired via trade. However, he turned just 25 this offseason and is a former top prospect, so expect the White Sox to give him plenty of leash to see if he can hit his stride.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Adds muscle

Vargas added 20 pounds of muscle during the offseason, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Vargas had considerable prospect pedigree while rising through the Dodgers' system, though he's hit just .204 with 13 home runs across 591 big-league plate appearances. His struggles in 2024 were at least partially blamed on the fact that he lost 12-to-14 pounds during the season, causing him to prioritize adding muscle this offseason. Vargas made his spring debut Saturday against the Cubs and went 0-for-2 with a walk.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Taking seat Friday

Vargas is not in the lineup for Friday's game in Detroit. Vargas had started each of the last five games and eight of the last nine contests, but he'll begin Friday's series opener on the bench. Bryan Ramos will play third base and bat seventh for the White Sox.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Goes deep Sunday

Vargas went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the Padres. Vargas took Yu Darvish deep to left center in the sixth to put the White Sox back up 2-1, though the lead would vanish in the eighth. Vargas picked up his first multi-hit game as a member of the White Sox and just his second home run and stolen base. In 36 games with his new team, Vargas is batting .122/.231/.200 with seven RBI, eight runs and a 15:38 BB:K in 138 plate appearances.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Not starting Friday

Vargas isn't in the White Sox's lineup for Friday's game versus San Diego. After going 1-for-11 with an RBI during Chicago's last series against the Angels, Vargas will get a breather to begin the Sox's three-game set with the Padres. While he rests, Bryan Ramos will handle the hot corner and bat eighth.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Still has chances for playing time

The White Sox intend to prioritize playing time for Vargas and Bryan Ramos down the stretch of the regular season, despite the return of Yoan Moncada (adductor) from the 60-day injured list, Kyle Glaser of MLB.com reports. While Ramos appears to have the upper hand for chances at the hot corner, skipper Grady Sizemore stated in Monday's pregame press conference that he has no set plan to introduce Moncada back into the starting nine, and he'll continue to give both Vargas and Ramos plenty of playing time during the last few weeks of the season. Vargas will likely see opportunities to play at various positions around the diamond over the next 11 games as the club sets its sights on next year.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Losing work to Ramos

Vargas is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Vargas will take a seat for the second day in a row and for the third time in five contests. Bryan Ramos appears to have supplanted Vargas as Chicago's preferred option at third base, though both players could see their opportunities dry up if Yoan Moncada (adductor) is able to return from the injured list later in the week.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Knocks in one

Vargas went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a walk Saturday against the Mets. Vargas has struggled since being dealt to the White Sox, as he has collected only eight hits across 76 at-bats with one homer, four RBI and five runs scored. While poor team context deflates some of his numbers, he's also struck out at a 27.9 percent clip in that span. Despite those struggles, Vargas has remained the White Sox's primary third baseman, which should continue at least until Yoan Moncada (thigh) can return.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Getting day off

Vargas is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Yankees. Vargas will head to the bench for the first time since the White Sox acquired him from the Dodgers on July 29. While picking up six starts at designated hitter, three at designated hitter and one in left field over the White Sox's past 10 contests, Vargas went 3-for-36 with a home run and a 6:13 BB:K.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: First homer with ChiSox

Vargas went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Friday against the Twins. Vargas has immediately stepped into a significant role with his new club, and he served as the leadoff hitter Friday. His homer in the third inning marked his first hit with the White Sox and fourth long ball of the season.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Starting in left field

Vargas will start in left field and bat second in Wednesday's game versus the Royals. The presumption was that Vargas would return to playing the infield after landing with the White Sox in a trade. However, after making his debut with his new club at designated hitter on Tuesday, he's now being used in the outfield. Vargas could still wind up playing a lot of third base and/or second base, but on Wednesday, the White Sox will have Nick Senzel cover the hot corner and Lenyn Sosa man the keystone.

  • White Sox's Miguel Vargas: Goes to ChiSox in three-team deal

The White Sox acquired Vargas and infielders Alexander Albertus (undisclosed) and Jeral Perez and a player to be named later or cash considerations Monday in a three-team deal involving the Dodgers and Cardinals, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports. The Dodgers acquired utility man Tommy Edman (wrist) and right-handers Michael Kopech and Oliver Gonzalez, while the Cardinals received right-hander Erick Fedde, outfielder Tommy Pham and a player to be named later or cash considerations. Vargas should have a clear path to playing time clear in Chicago, where he could return to his more familiar spot at second base after the Dodgers used him exclusively in the corner outfield this season. The 24-year-old carries a .658 OPS over parts of three major-league seasons, but Vargas is a career .308/.396/.493 hitter during his time in the minors.

  • Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Could play third base

Manager Dave Roberts said Saturday that Vargas could play third base as soon as Sunday, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports. The Dodgers are dealing with a plethora of injuries in the infield, with Mookie Betts (hand), Max Muncy (oblique), Miguel Rojas (forearm) and Chris Taylor (groin) all on the IL while Freddie Freeman was placed on the family emergency list Saturday. Vargas has primarily played left field for the Dodgers this season but with the team shorthanded, he could see some action at third base. Vargas has a .745 OPS this season with three homers in 79 plate appearances.

  • Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Called up from Triple-A

The Dodgers recalled Vargas from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Monday. Shortstop Mookie Betts (hand) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move, but Vargas isn't expected to get the first chance to replace the seven-time All-Star in the Dodgers' everyday lineup. Instead, manager Dave Roberts suggested after Sunday's 3-0 win over the Royals that Miguel Rojas would likely step in as the Dodgers' primary shortstop, so Vargas could be limited to the short-side platoon role in the corner outfield that he previously held during his three-plus-week stay with the big club earlier in the season. Vargas saw extended time at second base with the Dodgers and Oklahoma City in 2023, but he's played exclusively in left field and at designated hitter in 2024.

  • Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Optioned to Triple-A

Vargas was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City by the Dodgers on Saturday, J.P. Hoornstra of DodgersNation.com reports. Vargas traveled with the Dodgers to South Korea for their upcoming series versus the Padres, but he will not be on the active roster. The 24-year-old has been working out in left field this spring and figures to continue playing the outfield while at OKC.

  • Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Not in lineup Friday

Vargas is not in the lineup Friday versus the Angels. Mookie Betts will make his 19th start of the year at second base, and it's his sixth start there in the Dodgers' last 12 games. Vargas hit a double in Thursday's win over the Dodgers but holds a disappointing .197/.300/.370 slash line over 299 plate appearances.

  • Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Sitting amid struggles

Vargas is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Pirates. Mookie Betts will start at second base and bat leadoff versus the Pirates and right-hander Luis Ortiz. Vargas went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts in Monday's series opener and is slashing just .197/.301/.369 through 294 plate appearances this season.

  • Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Ends slump with homer

Vargas went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Angels. Vargas had gone 0-for-20 over his last six games and came up empty in his first three at-bats Wednesday before knocking a ninth-inning solo shot. It snapped an 11-game homer drought for the infielder. He continues to see regular playing time, but he's slashing just .207/.309/.388 with seven homers, 30 RBI, 32 runs scored and three stolen bases over 69 contests. Vargas also struck out three times Wednesday, but he's displayed a decent eye at the plate with a 19.9 percent strikeout rate and a 12.4 percent walk rate on the year.

  • Dodgers' Miguel Vargas: Out of lineup

Vargas will sit Saturday against the Phillies, Kirsten Watson of SportsNet LA reports. Vargas went hitless in Friday's series opener but reached base twice on a pair of walks. His eye has been his biggest strength in his first full major-league season, with his 13.0 percent walk rate helping him to a 110 wRC+ despite his modest .231 batting average and six homers. Mookie Betts will move in to play second base in Vargas' absence, with Jason Heyward taking Betts' usual spot in right field.
