Pirates' Michael Darrell-Hicks: Demoted to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Darrell-Hicks to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.
Just two days after coming up from the minors, Darrell-Hicks will head back to Indianapolis to make room for the newly signed Genesis Cabrera. Darrell-Hicks has given up eight earned runs over 9.2 innings during his time in the big leagues this year, and his Triple-A performance hasn't been much better (8.14 ERA through 24.1 IP).

The Angels DFA'd Darrell-Hicks on Sunday, and the 27-year-old reliever will get a fresh start with the Pirates. Darrell-Hicks and Touki Toussaint will be added to the Angels' bullpen after Jake Eder was optioned to Triple-A and Garrett McDaniels (biceps) was placed on the 15-day injured list in corresponding moves. Darrell-Hicks received his first call-up to the big leagues prior to Sunday's game against the Guardians, but he went unused out of the bullpen in the Angels' 6-2 win and will now head back to the minors. The Angels have yet to announce a corresponding transaction, but Darrell-Hicks' spot on the 26-man active roster will presumably go to right-hander Ryan Johnson, who is set to return from the paternity list ahead of Tuesday's game at Tampa Bay.

Darrell-Hicks will get his first call-up to the big leagues and will join the bullpen as a replacement for Caden Dana, who was optioned to Triple-A so that he could presumably continue to stay stretched out as a starter. A 27-year-old righty, Darrell-Hicks had given up two earned runs while striking out four over 4.1 innings for Salt Lake this season. He split time between Triple-A and Double-A Rocket City in 2024, logging a 2.60 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 69:13 K:BB over 62.1 innings.
