  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Chased early at Target Field

Burrows (1-3) earned the loss after lasting just 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks while striking out one during Saturday's 12-4 loss to the Twins. After posting five shutout innings with six strikeouts his last time out, Burrows had perhaps his worst start as a pro Saturday. The 25-year-old set a couple of career marks that pitchers don't really like to set, allowing a career-high six runs in 1.1 innings, the shortest start of his young career. The right-hander will enter the All-Star break with a 4.83 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 42 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Fires five scoreless in Seattle

Burrows didn't factor in the decision Saturday against the Mariners after allowing three hits and four walks over five shutout innings. He struck out six. Burrows struggled with his control as he set a season high with four walks, but he was able to scatter three hits to keep Seattle off the board. The right-hander has yet to last six frames in any of his nine outings this season, but he's pitched well as a back-end rotation piece for Pittsburgh with a 3.63 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 41:14 K:BB in 39.2 innings.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Fans five in no-decision

Burrows did not factor in the decision during Sunday's win against the Mets. He allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out five over 4.1 innings. Burrows got the start Sunday on short rest after making a multi-inning relief appearance against Milwaukee on Wednesday. While he did not qualify for the win, he was sharp, with the lone blemish on his outing being Luis Torrens' solo shot in the fifth inning. Burrows dropped his ERA to 4.15 with a 35:10 K:BB through 34.2 innings this season. He's currently slated to start in Seattle next weekend.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Starting Sunday after relief outing

Burrows is scheduled to start Sunday against the Mets after he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Brewers, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Burrows came on to make his first relief appearance for the Pirates this season after starter Paul Skenes lasted a career-low four innings Wednesday. As a result, the rookie right-hander's turn in the rotation will be pushed back a couple days, and he will take the ball Sunday on three days rest.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Allows two homers in loss

Burrows (1-2) took the loss against the Rangers on Friday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts over 4.2 innings. Burrows allowed two runs in the first inning, and then gave up solo homers in the fourth and fifth. The 25-year-old has been a mixed bag through six starts with the Pirates this season, allowing two earned runs or fewer three times and exactly four earned runs in each of the other three outings. He'll take a 4.82 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 29:8 K:BB across 28 innings into a home matchup with the Mets next weekend.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Plenty of whiffs in no-decision

Burrows came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Cubs, allowing one run on five hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter. The rookie right-hander engaged in a pitchers' duel with veteran Matthew Boyd, and Burrows racked up an impressive 16 swinging strikes among his 81 pitches (56 total strikes) before exiting the mound with the score tied 1-1. The 5.1 innings tied for his longest outing among his first five appearances in 2025 with the Pirates, and Burrows will take a 4.24 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB through 23.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Rangers.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Escapes with no-decision

Burrows allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 3.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Burrows' second major-league start was a little worse than his first. He gave up a solo home run to Corbin Carroll in the first inning and then ran into trouble in the fourth. Burrows would have taken a second loss were it not for the Pirates' offense rallying ahead in a massive eighth inning. Burrows has given up nine runs (eight earned) with a 5:4 K:BB across 8.1 innings over his first two starts. Should he stay in the rotation, he is tentatively projected to make his next appearance at home versus the Astros.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Hurt by long ball in season debut

Burrows (0-1) took the loss Thursday against the Brewers after allowing four runs on four hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out three. Thursday marked the first major-league start of the season and second career outing for Burrows, who struggled to keep the ball in the yard against Milwaukee. The 25-year-old right-hander served up two home runs, and he got an ordinary nine whiffs. Burrows sports a 2.51 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 41:11 K:BB over 32.1 innings for Triple-A Indianapolis in 2025, but he'll be tough to trust in his next scheduled turn against an Arizona team that boasts an .812 OPS versus right-handers through their first 50 games.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Promoted ahead of start Thursday

The Pirates recalled Burrows from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. Pittsburgh had been expected to wait until Thursday to make Burrows' promotion official, but he'll join the big club a day in advance of his first MLB start Thursday against the Brewers at PNC Park. He'll be joining the rotation as a replacement for righty Carmen Mlodzinski, who was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old righty has been a standout performer at Indianapolis this season, logging a 2.40 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 39:9 K:BB across 30 innings.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Promoted to majors

Burrows was promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Burrows was one of the final pitchers in contention for a roster spot out of spring training but missed out to begin the regular season. With Tim Mayza (shoulder) out for the long term, Burrows will likely start with a depth bullpen role. However, he has served as a starter with Triple-A Indianapolis and could get spot starts on occasion.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Optioned to Indy

The Pirates optioned Burrows to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday. Burrows didn't see much success during his time in the Grapefruit League, giving up four earned runs in just five innings while striking out three batters and walking four. That being said, the 25-year-old held his own during his MLB debut last season, so the Pirates may be willing to promote him again in 2025 for spot starts or perhaps a more permanent spot if there are injuries.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Earns first win

Burrows (1-0) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks while striking out two to earn the win Saturday against the Yankees. Burrows followed Paul Skenes into the game to make his major-league debut. Despite his final line, he began 11 of the 14 batters he faced with a strike and managed to throw 60 percent of his pitches over the plate. Most importantly, he has proved healthy and capable of handling a normal workload across the second half of the season after returning from Tommy John surgery. That should put him in a position to compete for a rotation spot in 2025.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Rehab moved to Single-A

Burrows (elbow) had his rehab assignment transferred from the rookie-level Florida Complex League to Single-A Bradenton on Friday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Burrows continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery in April 2023. He made his first rehab outing in the FCL on Monday, when he gave up three runs on one hit and two walks over 1.1 innings. Burrows is expected to start for Bradenton early next week.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Starts up rehab assignment

Burrows (elbow) began a rehab assignment Monday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League, covering 1.1 innings while allowing three earned runs on one hit and two walks. Burrows' appearance was his first in affiliated ball since April 8, 2023, as the right-hander had been shut down ever since undergoing Tommy John surgery later that month. He currently resides on Triple-A Indianapolis' 60-day injured list and will eventually rejoin the Pirates' top affiliate once he completes an extended rehab assignment in the lower levels of the minors. Expect Burrows to remain in Florida for at least another week or two while he continues to build up his pitch count and looks to regain his pre-surgery command and velocity.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Hits Triple-A IL

Triple-A Indianapolis placed Burrows (forearm) on its 7-day injured list April 11. Burrows' move to the IL was fully expected after Pirates general manager Ben Cherington disclosed that the right-hander suffered a forearm injury in his second outing of the season for Indianapolis back on April 8. The 23-year-old is without a definitive timeline for a return.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: Unlucky in Triple-A

Burrows has a 4.93 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 34:9 K:BB through 34.2 innings with Triple-A Indianapolis. After a dominant showing in Double-A, the 22-year-old hasn't been nearly so successful at the higher level. In fact, he's only managed to finish five innings one time in nine appearances (seven starts), and his strikeout rate has dipped quite a bit (from 11.9 K/9 to 8.8). That said, Burrows hasn't had great luck in Triple-A -- he's allowed a .327 BABIP while posting just a 61.9 percent strand rate, so he's due for some positive regression. With two very good pitches (a mid-to-high-90s fastball and a sharp curveball), Burrows has a floor as a high-leverage bullpen arm, but he still has a chance to be a big-league starter if he can develop his changeup into a plus offering.

  • Pirates' Mike Burrows: One step closer to majors

Burrows was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, Adam Babetski of the Altoona Mirror reports. The 22-year-old righty posted a 2.94 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 69:19 K:BB in 52 innings across 12 starts at Double-A. Burrows has been fantastic for most of the season and will make his Triple-A debut Sunday.
