  Gallen allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out two over 4.1 innings in Thursday's spring start against the Athletics. Gallen made his final Cactus League start a few hours after he was tabbed for the Opening Day assignment by manager Torey Lovullo. The right-hander threw 73 pitches (43 strikes) and told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports that he was more in sync during this outing than in previous starts. Next up for Gallen is Thursday's regular-season opener against the Cubs.

• Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Named Opening Day starter

  Gallen will start Opening Day, March 27 against the Cubs, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Many anticipated Corbin Burnes to make his Diamondbacks debut in the first game of the season, but the team will instead give the Opening Day start to Gallen for the third consecutive year. The 29-year-old has made three appearances in the Cactus League this spring, giving up two earned runs while striking out eight batters and walking three over five innings. While Gallen may never return to his 2022 form (2.54 ERA, 0.91 WHIP), he hasn't lost his strikeout stuff and should be able to comfortably reach double-digit wins with Arizona's high-scoring offense behind him.

• Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Fans three in third spring outing

The negatives are obviously the walks, but Gallen told Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports that he had success with the curveball in his third Cactus League start. The right-hander threw 52 pitches (24 strikes) as he builds up ahead of Opening Day.

  Gallen allowed one run on one hit and struck out two over one inning in Monday's spring game against Cleveland. Gallen threw 15 pitches (nine for strikes), including a changeup that Gabriel Arias sent back over the fence in left-center field. The right-hander told Steve Gilbert of MLB.com that he felt better than his most recent live batting practice session, but the changeup that Arias hammered was "kind of flat." Gallen and Corbin Burnes are considered co-aces -- each has thrown one Cactus League inning -- and manager Torey Lovullo is still deciding which one will start Opening Day.

• Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen: Strikes out 11 in 14th win

  Gallen (14-6) picked up the win over the Giants on Wednesday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks over six innings while striking out 11. The only run charged to Gallen on the night came across in the second inning after he walked the leadoff man to open the frame before then surrendering an RBI double to Tyler Fitzgerald. The right-hander responded by retiring 14 of the next 15 batters he faced while also posting a season-high 11 strikeouts in the contest. Gallen generated 16 whiffs on the night and it marked the third time this season in which he's recorded double-digit strikeouts. He's now won his last five decisions (spanning seven starts) and carries a 2.67 ERA in September to go along with a 38:11 K:BB. On the downside, Gallen has also issued multiple free passes in nine of his last 10 outings.

  Gallen (13-6) picked up the win Friday, giving up four runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over five innings in a 7-4 victory over the Brewers. He struck out five. The righty blanked Milwaukee for four innings before falling apart in the fifth, blowing a 4-0 lead by serving up long balls to Joey Ortiz, William Contreras and Garrett Mitchell. Arizona struck back for three more runs in the top of the sixth, however, allowing Gallen to escape with the win. It marks Gallen's first time allowing multiple homers since April 26, and he's been both lucky and good down the stretch as the Diamondbacks push for a playoff spot, going 4-0 over his last six outings with a 3.38 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 43:15 K:BB through 32 innings. He lines up to make his final start of the regular season at home next week against the Giants.

He'll look to keep things on track in his next start, which is projected to be at Colorado.

  Gallen allowed five runs on six hits and two walks while striking out seven over five innings in a no-decision versus the Dodgers on Friday. Gallen once again followed a strong start -- a six-inning scoreless outing versus the Red Sox last Saturday -- with a dud, though the Dodgers are a tough opponent for anyone. Over eight starts since the All-Star break, Gallen has allowed 19 runs across 44.1 innings, with 17 of those runs coming in just four of the starts. The right-hander is at a 3.87 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 118:43 K:BB through 121 innings over 23 starts this year. He's never walked 50 batters in a season, but it appears inevitable he will this year as he's issued multiple walks in seven of his last eight starts. Gallen is projected to make his next start at San Francisco.

Fantasy managers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Gallen didn't sustain an injury Saturday and was merely experiencing cramping. Despite getting ample run support, the 28-year-old fell short of reaching the five frames he needed to qualify for the win, as he covered 4.1 innings and struck out three batters while yielding one run on five hits and two walks prior to departing. Gallen is tentatively scheduled to pitch during a three-game road series against the Rays next weekend.

Gallen gave up a run in the fourth inning but otherwise silenced the Nationals for his second straight quality start and third straight victory. Since giving up a season-high seven runs (six earned) over 3.2 frames against Toronto on July 14, Gallen has surrendered just four runs over his subsequent 17 innings. The right-hander's control had been shaky coming into Wednesday, however, as he had issued nine free passes across his previous two outings. He may have eased those concerns against Washington by issuing just one walk in the win.

Gallen was unusually lacking in command and control -- this was the second time in five starts he's walked multiple batters, and it's the first time all year he's walked more batters than he's struck out. The Cubs were unable to punish his wildness, and the Diamondbacks' bullpen went on to yield just one hit over four scoreless innings to preserve a 3-0 lead. Gallen is now at a 3.64 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 80:27 K:BB through 81.2 innings across 16 starts this year. The right-hander's next start is projected to be at home versus the Pirates.

  Gallen (6-5) took the loss Tuesday against Atlanta, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over 5.1 innings. Gallen needed 53 pitches just to get through the first two innings, which is the most for him in a start this year. Atlanta pushed two runs across on him in the second, though one came off an error. Gallen then tossed three scoreless frames before coming back out for the sixth, and faltered there, allowing two men on before Adam Duvall crushed a curveball 441 feet to left to put Atlanta up 5-0 and end Gallen's night at 105 pitches. The home run was just the third Gallen's given up in his last seven starts (excluding his May 30 start when he exited the game after one batter). The 28-year-old owns a 3.33 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 75:20 K:BB in 73 innings and lines up for one final start before the All-Star break against Toronto this weekend.

Gallen returned from a hamstring injury that cost him nearly a month and took full advantage of a soft matchup. This was the fourth time this season he's gone six innings in a start without allowing a run. He's also posted five quality starts in his last six outings, with the lone exception being the May 30 start that ended with the aforementioned hamstring injury before he could record an out. The right-hander is now at a 2.83 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 67:16 K:BB through 63.2 innings over 12 starts. Gallen threw 77 pitches (50 strikes) Saturday, so he should be good for a full workload his next time out, which is tentatively projected for a road outing at San Diego.

After tossing 31- and 37-pitch bullpen sessions last week, Gallen advanced to facing hitters in a simulated game Tuesday. Gallen's strained right hamstring apparently responded well to the workout, but the Diamondbacks will still have him toss another sim game during the upcoming week before signing off on his return to the rotation. If all goes well during his second sim game, Gallen could return at some point during the Diamondbacks' series in Oakland next weekend.

  The Diamondbacks placed Gallen on the 15-day injured list Friday due to a right hamstring strain. Gallen was pulled from Thursday's start against the Mets after throwing just six pitches without recording an out. He has been dealing with a right hamstring issue since April 26, and the 28-year-old right-hander will now be on the shelf for an extended period of time after aggravating the injury. It's unclear how long Gallen will be sidelined, but if he misses only the minimum, that would put him in line to return June 15 against the White Sox. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks recalled right-hander Slade Cecconi from Triple-A Reno.
