Player Outlook
While Cade Povich lacks a truly special pitch, the 6-foot-3 lefty throws four or five quality pitches and showed improved control early this year in a return to Triple-A as a 24-year-old. He had a 14.7 percent walk rate in 10 starts at Triple-A last year and sports a 9.1 percent walk rate through 11 starts in 2024. This significant improvement suggests Povich should be a good bet to make it as a starter long term, and he could be given that first opportunity before the All-Star break. He throws his 91-94 mph four-seamer over 40 percent of the time while mixing in his cutter, changeup, sweeper and curveball. It seemed like Chayce McDermott and Povich each had a similar chance of breaking through as quality starters for the Orioles this year, but McDermott's control has regressed while the younger Povich's has improved, so Povich is currently the top pitcher in the system to stash.

  • Orioles' Cade Povich: So-so in loss

Povich (0-2) took the loss Monday against Cleveland, yielding three earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.2 innings. Povich allowed four extra-base hits on the night including a solo home run to Jose Ramirez in the sixth inning. Since a brutal MLB debut on June 6 where he allowed six earned runs, the 24-year-old rookie has pitched to a 2.20 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP in 16.1 innings over his past three starts. It remains to be seen if Povich will hold onto his rotation spot when Dean Kremer (triceps) returns from the IL. With Kremer likely to be activated in early July, Povich should make at least one more start, currently scheduled for this weekend against the Rangers.

  • Orioles' Cade Povich: Sticking around in rotation

Povich is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Yankees in New York, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports. After being roughed up for six earned runs in 5.1 innings in his MLB debut June 6 in Toronto, Povich rebounded nicely in his second start this past Wednesday, when he struck out six Atlanta batters over six scoreless frames. Povich will be rewarded with a third turn through the rotation for his efforts, but he may need another strong showing Wednesday to stick around with the big club. Dean Kremer (triceps) will likely make another rehab start this week before returning from the 15-day injured list thereafter, and Povich could be the odd man out of the rotation when that happens.

  • Orioles' Cade Povich: Blanks Atlanta in no-decision

Povich came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 4-2 win over Atlanta, allowing five hits over six scoreless innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. The southpaw was brilliant in his second big-league start, firing 63 of 89 pitches for strikes and leaving the mound in line for his first career win before Matt Olson tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth inning. Despite this performance, Povich may be headed back to the minors if Dean Kremer (triceps) is cleared to rejoin the rotation next week, but if the O's want to keep the youngster around, Albert Suarez could also shift back to the bullpen.

  • Orioles' Cade Povich: Getting another start Wednesday

Povich will start Wednesday in Baltimore against Atlanta, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. The Orioles will keep Povich around in the big leagues as part of a six-man rotation, though he may not be guaranteed any starts beyond Wednesday with Dean Kremer (triceps) nearing a return from the 15-day injured list. After being called up from Triple-A Norfolk last week, Povich underwhelmed in his first MLB start Thursday against the Blue Jays, yielded six runs on five hits and four walks over 5.1 innings while collecting just two strikeouts.

  • Orioles' Cade Povich: Added to roster ahead of debut

The Orioles selected Povich's contract from Triple-A Norfolk ahead of his start Thursday against the Blue Jays in Toronto. Povich will be making his major-league debut Thursday as the Orioles give the other members of their rotation some extra rest. The rookie left-hander isn't necessarily guaranteed another start with the big club beyond Thursday, but he could certainly earn additional chances if he pitches well against the Blue Jays. Povich has put up a 3.18 ERA and 75:21 K:BB over 56.2 innings covering 11 starts this season with Norfolk.

  • Orioles' Cade Povich: On taxi squad, could pitch Thursday

Povich is headed to Toronto to join the Orioles' taxi squad and could be called up from Triple-A Norfolk to start Thursday's series finale versus the Blue Jays, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Kyle Bradish is on turn to start Thursday's series finale in Toronto, but the Orioles are considering handing that assignment to Povich and giving Bradish an extra day of rest. If Povich gets the nod Thursday, it would mark his MLB debut. He's had a dominant 2024 season with Norfolk, posting a 3.18 ERA and 75:21 K:BB over 56.2 innings covering 11 starts.
