Player Outlook
A groundball specialist, Jonathan Cannon lacks a plus pitch, but his sinker/slider combination is designed to generate weak contact. The 6-foot-6 righty also mixes in a 90-mph cutter, low-80s curveball and a changeup. He posted a 5.77 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in 11 starts at Double-A last year, but he was a bit unlucky (56.2 LOB%, .346 BABIP). Cannon had much more success in his first two starts of 2024 at Triple-A, maintaining a groundball rate north of 50 percent while striking out a career-best 25.6 percent of batters, albeit with an 11.6 percent walk rate. The White Sox will add Cannon to the rotation earlier than expected in mid-April, and keeping the ball on the ground will be his ticket to sticking around.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Shelled by Tigers

Cannon (1-2) was tagged with the loss after he pitched one inning, giving up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits while striking out one batter in Sunday's 11-2 defeat to the Tigers. Cannon ran into trouble early Sunday, surrendering five runs in the first inning while serving up two home runs. He returned to the mound for the second frame, allowing three straight singles before being pulled from the contest. Cannon's performance against Detroit was quite the 180 degree shift from his last outing Tuesday versus the Astros, when he pitched 8.2 scoreless innings. On the season, Cannon now owns a 4.59 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 29 strikeouts over 33.1 innings in seven appearances, including six starts, with the White Sox. With Mike Clevinger (elbow) nearing a return from the 15-day injured list, it's unclear if Cannon will get another turn in the rotation.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Fires 8.2 scoreless in first win

Cannon (1-1) earned his first career win Tuesday against Houston, allowing seven hits and one walk over 8.2 scoreless innings. He struck out four. The 23-year-old rookie tossed the best game of his short career, leading the charge for the first White Sox shutout since May 21. Cannon has displayed masterful control in the majors, allowing just six walks in 32.1 innings. The Chicago right-hander now sports a 3.34 ERA and 1.24 WHIP this season. He is currently scheduled to make his next start against the Tigers on the road this weekend. Although Mike Clevinger (elbow) is rehabbing and nearing a return, Cannon's strong performance to date may keep him in the White Sox rotation long term.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Picking up another start

Cannon is scheduled to start Tuesday's game against the Astros in Chicago, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. After initially working out of the bullpen and recording a three-inning save following his call-up from Triple-A Charlotte on June 7, Cannon entered the rotation Wednesday and came through with a dazzling performance, striking out seven while limiting the Mariners to one run on four hits and one walk over seven innings. He'll stick around in the rotation on the heels of the stellar showing, and Cannon could get at least one more start beyond Tuesday due to Mike Clevinger (elbow) being unlikely to return from the injured list until the final week of June. Cannon will tentatively line up for a two-start week, with his second outing likely to come next Sunday in Detroit.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Strong in return to rotation

Cannon allowed one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Mariners on Wednesday. Cannon dueled with Seattle starter Bryce Miller for seven innings, but the Mariners struck first when Luke Raley hit a solo home run in the seventh. This was still Cannon's best start of the season, and it appears he'll have a chance to stick in the rotation for a while following the White Sox's recent reshuffling of their pitching staff. The 23-year-old is at a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 24:5 K:BB over 23.2 innings over five appearances (four starts). Mike Clevinger (elbow) is expected to require a rehab assignment prior to returning to the Chicago rotation, and since that has yet to be announced, it seems likely Cannon will take the mound during next week's home series versus the Astros, especially after the right-hander's strong showing in Seattle.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Tabbed to start Wednesday

Cannon is listed as the White Sox's probable starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. The 23-year-old was recalled by Chicago and recorded a three-inning save Friday against Boston, and his next appearance will come as a starter. Cannon started in his three previous outings for the White Sox this season but struggled with 11 runs allowed and a 13:4 K:BB over 13.2 innings.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Earns save Friday

Cannon allowed three hits over three scoreless innings Friday, striking out four and picking up a save against Boston. Cannon entered the game with a 6-2 lead and threw 41 of 60 pitches for strikes on his way to earning his first MLB save. He was promoted from Triple-A Charlotte on Friday and made his first big-league appearance out of the bullpen after starting three games for the White Sox in April. Cannon was expected to be a back-end rotation piece after the promotion, but he could be used in more of a long relief role for the time being. He owns a 5.94 ERA with a 17:4 K:BB through 16.2 innings.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Heads back to Triple-A

The White Sox optioned Cannon to Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday. Cannon's first stint in the big leagues lasted three turns through the rotation, with the rookie right-hander going 0-1 with a 7.24 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB in 13.2 innings across those starts. The White Sox have a day off Thursday and could get by with a four-man rotation until Mike Clevinger is fully stretched out for starting duty and ready to make his season debut, which could come as soon as next Sunday.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Lit up for six runs

Cannon dropped to 0-1 on the season in Monday's 7-0 loss to the Twins, allowing six runs on nine hits and one walk over 3.2 innings while striking out five. Minnesota jumped on Cannon early, plating two runs in the first inning and three more in the third. His day was ended by an RBI double from Edouard Julien in the fourth. Cannon produced a solid MLB debut against the Royals but saw his ERA shoot up to 7.27 after Monday's tough outing. Should he get another turn in the rotation, he's lined up to face the Rays at home this weekend.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Debut postponed due to rain

Cannon and the White Sox won't play against the Royals on Tuesday since the game was postponed due to rain. Cannon had his contract selected earlier Tuesday and was poised to make his MLB debut, but Mother Nature had other ideas. The game will be made up via a straight doubleheader Wednesday, and Cannon will start the earlier of the two games.

  • White Sox's Jonathan Cannon: Officially promoted for MLB debut

The White Sox selected Cannon's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. Cannon has made two starts so far in the minors, allowing three earned runs across 9.2 innings while striking out 11 batters and walking five. He will start Tuesday's game against the Royals, though the 23-year-old righty will most likely be sent back to Charlotte after making his MLB debut. In order to make room for Cannon, Jared Shuster was optioned to Triple-A, and Josimar Cousin was designated for assignment.
