The Phillies designated Hernandez for assignment Wednesday. Hernandez doesn't have any minor-league options remaining, so the Phillies had to remove him from their 40-man roster to clear a spot for right-hander Michael Mercado, who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. After being claimed off waivers from the Royals in the spring, Hernandez had operated as a low-leverage reliever for Philadelphia this season, logging a 5.26 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and 23:13 K:BB in 25.2 innings. Any team willing to trade for or put in a waiver claim for the right-hander will have to assume the money remaining on his $1.16 million contract for 2025.... See More ... See Less

Phillies' Carlos Hernandez: Working in low-leverage situations
Hernandez threw a clean ninth inning in Tuesday's 8-3 victory over the Blue Jays. He struck out one. Hernandez bounced back after giving up one run in his last appearance, and it was his first spotless outing since May 19. The 28-year-old right-hander has one hold and zero saves in 2025, and his 5.87 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 21:13 K:BB through 23 innings are unlikely to get him into the Phillies' high-leverage mix in the future.... Phillies' Carlos Hernandez: Claimed by Philly
The Phillies claimed Hernandez off waivers from the Royals on Sunday. The right-hander was put on outright waivers after missing out on Kansas City's Opening Day bullpen Saturday, and it didn't take long for him to be scooped up by another team. Hernandez had a 3.30 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 27:16 K:BB over 30 innings during the regular season last year, but he struggled in spring training with eight runs allowed and an 8:5 K:BB over 10.1 innings.... Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Doesn't make KC bullpen
Hernandez will not make the Kansas City bullpen and is set to be put on outright waivers, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. He's out of minor-league options and is likely to be claimed by another team. While he had a 6.97 ERA this spring with a 8:5 K:BB ratio in 10.1 innings, another team may take a chance on his near 100-mph fastball.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Settles with Kansas City
The Royals and Hernandez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $1.16 million contract Thursday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. It was the second year of arbitration eligibility for Hernandez, who posted a 3.30 ERA and 27:16 K:BB across 30 regular-season innings during 2024. The righty has teased with his big fastball but has shown no indication to this point that he can be consistently relied upon.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Moves up from Triple-A
The Royals recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Omaha on Monday. He'll absorb the roster spot vacated by Will Smith (back), who was placed on the injured list. Hernandez has permitted eight runs (six earned) with a 14:9 K:BB over 15.2 frames this season during his time with the big club.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Optioned to Triple-A
The Royals optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Omaha on Monday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Hernandez allowed just one earned run with a 6:1 K:BB over four innings during his most recent stint in the majors but nonetheless is being sent out. John Schreiber is back from the injured list to absorb his roster spot.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Returns to majors
The Royals recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Omaha on Saturday. With Hunter Harvey on the injured list due to a back injury, Hernandez will return to Kansas City to fill the open spot in the Royals' bullpen. The 27-year-old righty owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through 11.2 innings in the majors this year, though he has surrendered seven runs in just 7.2 frames since being optioned to Omaha in early July.... Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Handed loss Tuesday
Hernandez (0-1) took the loss versus the Marlins on Tuesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out one over two-thirds of an inning. Hernandez hadn't given up a run over his first 3.2 innings back in the majors since his recall June 18. That changed in the seventh inning Tuesday, as the Marlins got RBI singles from Nick Gordon and Jazz Chisholm to flip the script on the Royals. Hernandez has allowed three runs (two earned) with a 3:4 K:BB over seven innings across eight appearances this year. While initially thought to be an option for high-leverage work, Hernandez suffered a shoulder impingement in spring training and has yet to record a save or hold in the majors this year.... Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Back in majors
The Royals recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. The right-hander was optioned to Triple-A in late May but will now rejoin the MLB club. Hernandez has made just four big-league appearances this season and has allowed one earned run with one strikeout and three walks over 2.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Clean inning in season debut
Hernandez pitched a perfect inning in Friday's 8-1 win over the Rays. Hernandez got three straight flyouts from Jonathan Aranda, Randy Arozarena and Jose Caballero to finish off the lopsided game. Hernandez missed nearly two months to begin 2024 as well as all of spring training due to a pinched nerve in his right shoulder. He pitched to an 8.22 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB over 7.2 innings during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha, though he kept runs off the board in five of his last six outings before he was activated. The Royals' bullpen has been OK this year, with James McArthur and John Schreiber leading the way for high-leverage opportunities, so Hernandez is likely to be eased in for his first few appearances.... Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Back from injured list
The Royals reinstated Hernandez (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list Friday. Hernandez was shut down at the start of spring training due to a pinched nerve in his right shoulder, but he's ready to join the Royals after an eight-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha. The right-hander recorded four saves and 17 holds last season but had a 5.27 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 70 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Sent out on rehab assignment
Hernandez (shoulder) began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Friday. Omaha's game Friday was rained out, but Hernandez should be expected to make a few rehab outings with the club over the next few weeks as he looks to get up to speed. The right-hander missed all of spring training due to a right shoulder impingement.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Nearing rehab assignment
Hernandez (shoulder) is expected to begin a rehab assignment later this week, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Hernandez has been throwing since mid-March and is now nearly ready for game action. Given how long he's been out, he'll likely need a handful of rehab outings to get up to speed. Hernandez figures to enter the high-leverage mix fairly quickly once he's healthy, as the Royals' top late-inning options have ranged from fine (James McArthur, John Schreiber) to awful (Will Smith) early in the season.... Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Lands on 15-day injured list
The Royals placed Hernandez on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a right shoulder impingement. Hernandez missed all of spring training with the shoulder issue. He resumed mound work about a week ago, but there's no timetable for his return to the active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Light bullpen session this weekend
Hernandez (shoulder) is scheduled to throw a light bullpen session this weekend, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Hernandez has been playing catch the last few days and will do so again Tuesday before progressing to some mound work shortly thereafter. The Royals have not ruled the reliever out for Opening Day yet, but it seems unlikely that he'll have time to ramp things back up by then.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Throws bullpen session
Hernandez (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Saturday's session marked the first time Hernandez has thrown off a mound in two weeks as he works his way back from right shoulder soreness. The Royals kept the intensity relatively low to begin with, and Hernandez will require several more mound sessions before potentially returning to play in spring training games.... See More ... Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Recovering from sore shoulder
Hernandez hasn't thrown off a mound in two weeks because of right shoulder soreness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The good news is that Hernandez is expected to be cleared for a bullpen session soon and should still be able to get in enough work before the end of spring training. The hard-throwing right-hander had a terrific first half and dreadful second half in 2023 and will be trying to work his way back into high-leverage appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Grabs fourth save
Hernandez picked up the save in Tuesday's 11-10 victory over the White Sox. He allowed one run on a hit and a walk while striking out one over one inning. Hernandez allowed a run for a fourth straight appearance, though he'd manage to hang on to a one-run lead Tuesday, earning his fourth save. It's been a tough run for Hernandez, who's allowed six runs in his last 2.2 innings while blowing two saves in that span. His ERA is up to 4.87 with a 1.21 WHIP and 75:26 K:BB this season. While Hernandez should still see high-leverage work in Kansas City, it's hard to trust him for fantasy purposes.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Carlos Hernandez: Takes 10th loss
Hernandez (1-10) allowed three runs on two hits and two walks over one-third of an inning, taking the loss and a blown save Friday versus the Blue Jays. Austin Cox started the eighth inning but sustained a left knee injury after facing two batters. Hernandez proceeded to allow an inherited runner to score before getting tagged for three runs himself. He has three blown saves and two saves over his last seven appearances, a span in which he's allowed six runs over six innings. He's at a 4.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 74:25 K:BB with three saves, 12 holds and five blown saves through 63.2 innings this season. Hernandez should continue to see high-leverage looks, but the quality of his performance of late puts him on the fantasy fringe.... See More ... See Less
