Player Outlook
Bailey Ober had a strong season that has him set to be a vital part of Minnesota's 2024 rotation. Ober began the season in the minors as the odd man out in a six-man rotation and got some spot starts in April before joining the rotation in May. He was sent down briefly in August to manage his workload, but finished strong with a 2.08 ERA over his last four starts (though he was hit hard in his lone playoff outing by giving up six runs in a loss). Ober doesn't have an overpowering fastball (91.4 mph average), but it's offset by his outstanding control (5% BB%) and above average off-speed pitches (slider, curve ball, change-up). His changeup became a lethal weapon by allowing just a .268 wOBA and helped lead to an overall 14.5% swinging K%. After throwing 144.1 innings, Ober shouldn't face any limitations on workload after staying healthy after struggling through injuries his first two major league seasons.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Tosses first career complete game

Ober (7-4) earned the win over Oakland on Saturday, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters over nine innings. Ober was extremely efficient in the impressive outing, needing just 89 pitches to polish off the first complete game of his career. The right-hander threw 70 of those pitches for strikes and racked up a career-best 23 whiffs. Ober did give up a pair of solo homers -- just the third time through 15 starts that he's allowed multiple home runs -- but those didn't hurt much with Minnesota's offense putting up 10 runs. Ober carries a 4.50 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 83:20 K:BB over 82 innings on the campaign.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Strong in win

Ober (6-4) allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over 6.1 innings to earn the win over the Athletics in Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader. Ober had his start pushed back a day after a rainout Saturday. This was his first quality start since May 12 and the first time he's completed six innings in that span. The right-hander has had a mediocre season so far with a 4.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 73:20 K:BB over 73 innings through 14 starts. Ober is projected to make his next start in a rematch versus the Athletics in Oakland.

Ober and the Twins won't play Saturday against the Athletics after the game was postponed due to inclement weather, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Ober will now have his start pushed back a day after Saturday's contest was rained out. He'll toe the rubber for one of the games during the team's Father's Day split doubleheader with Oakland on Sunday.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Struggles in no-decision

Ober escaped with a no-decision Sunday against Pittsburgh, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings. Ober did not allow a home run for the first time since May 12, but his recent struggles continued. The right-hander yielded three extra-base hits Sunday and has now given up multiple earned runs in five consecutive starts. During that span, the 28-year-old has limped to a 7.61 ERA and a 1.76 WHIP in 23.2 innings. Ober will look to bounce back in his next start, currently scheduled for next weekend versus Oakland.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Recent struggles continue

Ober (5-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on three hits, including a home run, and four walks over five innings against the Yankees. He struck out two. Ober wasn't sharp against a Yankees lineup that is on a roll. The outing continued his recent struggles, as he has a 7.58 ERA with a 15:8 K:BB in his last 19 innings. Ober hasn't thrown more than five innings in any of his last four starts, making him a risky option in his next start, which lines up to come this weekend in Pittsburgh.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Tagged for three homers

Ober (5-3) took the loss Wednesday versus the Royals, allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking none over five innings. Ober gave up hard contact -- Nelson Velazquez hit two home runs and Salvador Perez added a solo shot and an RBI double. This was the first time since his disastrous season debut that Ober allowed multiple homers, though he has yielded seven long balls over his last six starts. He's at a 4.89 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 58:12 K:BB through 57 innings over 11 starts this season. Ober's next start is projected to be on the road versus the Yankees.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Earns victory over Rangers

Ober (5-2) allowed two runs on four hits and three walks over five innings Friday, striking out five and earning a win over Texas. Ober coughed up a two-run shot to Corey Seager in the first inning but settled in for a solid outing after that. Despite striking out just five batters, Ober forced a season-high 16 whiffs, including seven with his changeup. He's generated at least 12 swinging strikes in six of his last seven starts. He owns a 4.33 ERA through 10 starts and a 3.02 ERA over his last nine. Ober's next outing is expected to come at home against the Royals.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Surrenders five runs in loss

Ober (4-2) took the loss against Cleveland on Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out four batters over four innings. A first-inning, two-run home run by Jose Ramirez set the tone for Cleveland's offense, which ended up scoring in all but one of the four frames during which Ober toed the rubber. The right-handed hurler needed 91 pitches to get 12 outs and finished with his shortest outing since his disastrous eight-run, 1.1-inning loss in his first start of the campaign. Ober had rebounded impressively from that blowup prior to Saturday, posting a 2.16 ERA and 0.67 WHIP over his subsequent seven starts.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Electric versus Blue Jays

Ober (4-1) earned the win after he pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out 10 batters in Sunday's 5-1 victory over Toronto. Ober was nearly perfect Sunday, allowing just a single to Vladimir Guerrero in the bottom of the fourth inning, while his 10 punchouts were a season high. The right-hander has now recorded four quality starts over eight outings this season. Since allowing eight runs against the Royals in his season debut, Ober has produced a 2.16 ERA with 44 strikeouts over 41.2 innings in his last seven starts. He'll look to keep it going when he returns to the mound for his next projected start Saturday in Cleveland.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Allows three hits in no-decision

Ober didn't factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs via three hits and one walk over five innings against the Mariners. He struck out seven. Although Ober wasn't credited with the win, he's now allowed three or fewer hits in five of his last six starts. Both runs against him came in the second, when Mitch Haniger swatted a leadoff homer and Luis Urias scored from first on a Dylan Moore double. After a hideous eight-run, 1.1-inning start to kick off the regular season, Ober has been outstanding, posting a 2.55 ERA and a 34:7 K:BB across the subsequent 35.1 innings. He's tentatively scheduled to close out a two-start week Sunday at Toronto.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Wins third straight

Ober (3-1) earned the win Wednesday over the White Sox, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three over six innings. After allowing two runs in the opening frame, Ober settled in to hold Chicago to just two more runs over his final five innings en route to a third consecutive winning decision. The four runs were the most Ober's allowed since he was tagged for eight runs in his first start of the year against Kansas City -- he'd held opponents to two runs or fewer in each of his subsequent four outings. Overall, the 28-year-old right-hander sports a 4.55 ERA with a 1.04 WHIP and 28:7 K:BB through 31.2 innings this season. Ober's currently slated for a home matchup with the Mariners in his next turn.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Notches second win

Ober (2-1) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over 7.1 innings Friday, striking out eight and earning a win over the Angels. Ober fired five shutout frames before the Angels broke through with a run in the sixth inning. After he was throttled for eight runs in his season debut, the 28-year-old righty has given up just four runs over his last four starts, dropping his ERA down to 4.21. He's also posted an impressive 24:6 K:BB through 24.1 frames over his last four outings. Ober is currently in line for a road matchup with the White Sox next week, in which he has a good chance of continuing to roll.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Blanks Tigers over six innings

Ober pitched six scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out three batters in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Tigers. He did not factor into the decision. Ober was in full command Sunday, throwing 58 of his 84 total pitches for strikes while limiting Detroit to two doubles and a single. The right-hander has now combined to pitch 11 innings of one-run ball over his last two starts after allowing nine runs (eight earned) in his first start of the season against the Royals on March 31. Ober will look to build off of the momentum of his last two outings in his next start, which is projected to be Saturday at home against the Tigers.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Guardians-Twins postponed Sunday

Ober and the Twins won't face the Guardians on Sunday due to inclement weather in Minnesota, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. The two teams will make up the game as part of a split doubleheader Aug. 9. As a result of the postponement, Minnesota is likely to push all five members of its rotation back a day in the schedule, so Ober's next start is expected to come Monday versus the Dodgers at Target Field.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Hit hard by Royals

Ober (0-1) picked up the loss after he pitched 1.1 innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out a batter, in Sunday's 11-0 defeat against the Royals. Ober was off his game Sunday, allowing three homers to Kansas City, including a three-run shot by Salvador Perez in the first inning. The right-hander allowed two more homers to open the second frame, failing to make it out of the inning. Ober will try to hit the reset button before returning to the mound for his next projected start Sunday versus the Guardians.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Strikes out seven in spring start

Ober gave up one run with seven strikeouts and no walks over three innings in Saturday's spring training loss to Philadelphia. He reached a carer-high 94.8 mph with his fastball, and Ober said he hopes to gain more velocity from offseason workouts, MLB.com reports. Ober, however, also reached 94 mph with his fastball last spring, according to the report, but averaged just 91.4 mph during the regular season. Still, his outing Saturday shows he's nearly in midseason form. While Ober may not have an overpowering fastball, it's offset by his outstanding control (5.0 percent walk rate) and above average off-speed pitches (slider, curve ball, change-up). He's set to be a vital part of Minnesota's rotation.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Gets call for Game 1

Ober will start Saturday against the Astros in Game 1 of the ALDS, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Ober wasn't even on the Twins' AL Wild Card Series roster, but he'll be entrusted with the series opener in Houston. The big right-hander was sent to the minors following a midseason swoon, but he returned in September to post a 2.08 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 21.2 innings of work. Ober will be opposed by Justin Verlander in Game 1.

He gave up two or fewer runs in each of his final four starts of the regular season, registering a 2.08 ERA and a 26:3 K:BB during that stretch. Ober ended the year with a strong 3.43 ERA and 146:29 K:BB through 144.1 innings.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Blanks Athletics

Ober (8-6) earned the win Tuesday, allowing two hits over five scoreless innings against the Athletics. He struck out eight. While Ober didn't go deeper than five innings for a ninth consecutive start, he turned in one of his best starts of the season, tying his season high in strikeouts while not allowing a homer for the first time since mid-July. Ober could have a tougher time in his next projected start, which will come Sunday against the Rockies at Coors Field.

  • Twins' Bailey Ober: Sticking in rotation

Ober will make a start during the team's upcoming series against the Reds in Cincinnati that begins Monday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. In his return to the Minnesota rotation Friday, Ober struck out six and limited the White Sox to two runs over five innings en route to claiming the win. The performance was solid enough to convince the Twins to keep him in the rotation for at least one more turn, with Ober most likely getting the ball Wednesday in Cincinnati if manager Rocco Baldelli elects to keep him on normal rest. Dallas Keuchel has been moved to the bullpen to open up the rotation spot for Ober.
