Player Outlook
Heston Kjerstad made a strong first impression in the majors late last season, but unfortunately he's only eligible in the utility spot to start 2024 in most fantasy leagues. A money-saving pick at No. 2 overall in 2020, Kjerstad famously didn't make his pro debut until midway through the 2022 season due primarily to a heart inflammation condition. He won the Arizona Fall League home run derby after the 2022 season and then slashed .303/.376/.528 with 21 home runs in 122 games across Double-A and Triple-A before getting a brief cup of coffee. While he is limited defensively to designated hitter, first base and occasional corner-outfield work, Kjerstad's bat should be good enough to profile at the bottom of the defensive spectrum. He had a 113.5 mph max exit velocity at Triple-A and a 105.1 mph 90th percentile exit velocity and then logged a 19.0 Barrel% and a 52.4% Statcast hard-hit rate in 21 batted-ball events in the majors. He didn't show significant lefty/righty splits last year, but Baltimore has a talented enough roster that the lefty-hitting Kjerstad may still sit against some lefties when he's in the majors. However, Oriole Park at Camden Yards plays much better for lefties than righties, so he should be able to hit for plenty of power, even if he's getting platooned. The stacked 40-man roster clouds Kjerstad's playing time outlook at the outset of 2024.

    Kjerstad went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run, an additional RBI, two total runs and a walk Thursday in an 11-2 rout of the Rangers. Kjerstad kicked off a big offensive game by Baltimore with a run-scoring single in the first inning and added a two-run homer in the third. The long ball was the first of the season for the 24-year-old, who returned from the minors Monday following a largely unsuccessful stint in the majors earlier in the campaign. Kjerstad's second go-round has been much better than his first so far, as he's gone 4-for-11 with two extra-base hits across four games since his most recent call-up.

Kjerstad spent a little over two weeks with the Orioles in late April and early May, going 2-for-14 with two walks and six strikeouts while appearing in seven contests. Since being sent down to Triple- Norfolk on May 13, the 25-year-old produced a .268 average with six home runs, 28 RBI, 23 runs and a stolen base over 34 contests, and he'll look to carry his momentum into his second stint with Baltimore in 2024. It's unclear who Kjerstad will replace on the major-league roster, but with Colton Cowser struggling to a .170 average with four extra-base hits over 53 at-bats in June, it's possible that Cowser is the odd man out.

The Orioles remain at close to full health in the infield and outfield and don't have an opening in the lineup for Kjerstad at the moment, so the 25-year-old will move back to Norfolk so that he can play on an everyday basis. And though the No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft is primarily an outfielder, he has gotten plenty of work at first base this year. It's not clear he'd be the favorite to start over Ryan O'Hearn, who also bats left-handed and has put up good numbers, but Kjerstad is the more exciting choice as a natural slugger who has taken a big step forward with his contact skills this year. Of particular note is his 89.7 percent zone-contact rate, which means when he swings at a strike, he rarely misses. It's hard to put much trust in him at this late stage of the season, but he could make the sort of splash Jasson Dominguez did.
