• Mets' Jose Butto: Available in relief Monday

  Butto (groin) is listed as an available relief option for Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays, Manny Gomez of NJ.com reports. Butto hasn't made any appearances since March 7 while tending to a minor groin injury, but after throwing a bullpen session over the weekend without issue, he looks like he'll be incorporated into the Mets' spring pitching schedule Monday. The 26-year-old right-hander should have an inside track on a spot in New York's Opening Day bullpen after submitting a 2.55 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 79 batters over 74 innings during the regular season in 2024.

The 26-year-old righty gave the rest of the Mets' bullpen a breather in a 15-2 rout, firing 44 pitches (27 strikes) to close things out. Butto has thrown at least 40 pitches in three of his last five appearances, posting a 1.54 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB in 11.2 innings over that stretch. If New York can't bring in rotation reinforcements at Tuesday's trade deadline, it wouldn't be a surprise if Butto gets stretched back out for a starting role.

Edwin Diaz's 10-game suspension could force the team to get creative when it comes to keeping the bullpen fresh. One possibility would be to option David Peterson and Tylor Megill down to Triple-A Syracuse after their next starts, replacing them with relief arms. In that scenario, Butto and Christian Scott would be needed to make spot starts when those turns in the rotation come around again. Butto has allowed two runs or less in five of six starts for Syracuse since being sent down in May, posting a 3.06 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through 32.1 innings over that stretch -- ratios that are almost an exact match for those he's generated at the big-league level this season.

The Mets are caught in a bind when it comes to their pitching staff. With Yohan Ramirez facing a two-game suspension, the team elected to add Reed Garrett to the roster for bullpen depth when Megill landed on the IL, which blocks Butto or Joey Lucchesi from being promoted to plug the immediate hole in the rotation. That gives prospects Christian Scott and Mike Vasil, who aren't yet on the 40-man roster, a leg up to take Megill's spot. The Mets are also said to have interest in signing Julio Teheran. Butto could be added late in the month, however -- New York plays 13 games in 13 days starting Friday and will likely need a sixth starter to get through that stretch.
