  • Giants' Randy Rodriguez: Strikes out five as opener

Rodriguez allowed a run on one hit and two walks while striking out five over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Cubs on Tuesday. Rodriguez made his first career start and had the most work of the Giants' six pitchers in the contest, though he was never going to pitch deep enough to have a chance at the win. He's given up 11 runs over 14.1 innings in June, but he has a 15:4 K:BB in that span that suggests he's got a skill set that can keep him in the majors. For the year, he's at a 4.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB over 30.2 innings through 19 appearances. With the Giants' rotation unlikely to gain reinforcements until July, Rodriguez may see a few more opener assignments over the next couple of weeks if manager Bob Melvin opts to protect the pitchers the team has called up to plug holes.

  • Giants' Randy Rodriguez: Serving as opener Tuesday

Rodriguez will serve as the Giants' opening pitcher for Tuesday's game versus the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Rodriguez has recorded at least five outs in 10 of his 18 appearances, so he should be capable of going at least a couple innings Tuesday. The Giants are opting for a second straight bullpen game after Erik Miller opened Monday's 5-4 win.

  • Giants' Randy Rodriguez: Snags win Monday

Rodriguez (2-1) retired the only batter he faced to earn the extra-inning win over the Astros on Monday. The Astros found success against Erik Miller to begin the 10th inning, but Rodriguez got a groundout from Jeremy Pena to end the half-inning with the Giants down 3-1. They rallied on offense, earning a walk-off win to give Rodriguez his second victory this season. Rodriguez has allowed multiple runs in two of his last six outings, but he's gone five appearances without walking a batter. On the year, the rookie reliever has a 3.05 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB over 20.2 innings, which is more than adequate for what amounts to a low-leverage role most of the time.

  • Giants' Randy Rodriguez: Gets walked off

Rodriguez (1-1) allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one in one-third of an inning, taking the loss Monday versus the Diamondbacks. Rodriguez served up a walk-off two-run blast to Pavin Smith in the ninth inning. After looking steady in the second half of May, Rodriguez has faltered by allowing four runs over his last 2.1 innings across three appearances. He's at a 3.57 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 23:7 K:BB over 17.2 innings while seeing most of his work in low-leverage spots, Monday's outing being a rare exception.

  • Giants' Randy Rodriguez: Grabs first win

Rodriguez (1-0) pitched two perfect innings and struck out one to earn the win over the Phillies on Monday. Rodriguez entered the game with the Giants behind by a run in the fifth inning, but he was sharp and the offense pulled ahead while the rookie right-hander was in the game. After allowing six runs (three earned) over his first three appearances, Rodriguez is riding a 7.2-inning scoreless streak over his last five appearances. He's at a 1.76 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 19:4 K:BB over 15.1 innings this season, and he's also picked up one hold. He has the ability to cover multiple innings, but that is likely to limit him to mostly low-leverage work despite his excellent ratios so far.

  • Giants' Randy Rodriguez: Joins big-league bullpen

The Giants recalled Rodriguez from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Rodriguez, 24, earns the promotion after allowing just two runs with a 10:4 K:BB over 10.2 innings with Sacramento this season. He will be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game.

  • Giants' Randy Rodriguez: Heads to minor-league camp

Rodriguez was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento by the Giants on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The 24-year-old was wild this spring in issuing eight walks over four relief innings. Control problems are nothing new for Rodriguez, who walked 57 across 70 frames in the minors in 2023.
