Player Outlook
Jordan Wicks made his MLB debut in 2023 and flashed some promise. The 2021 first round pick made a total of seven starts, compiling a 4.41 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 24 strikeouts across 34.2 innings. He actually had a 3.00 ERA and 1.12 WHIP through his first six starts, but he was tagged for six runs over only 1.2 innings in his final outing of the year. It's not surprising to see young pitchers endure some up and downs, so all in all, it was a promising first taste of the majors. The righty did allow 11 walks in his 34.2 innings, and he issued another 13 free passes in 33 innings with Triple-A Iowa, so he'll need to improve in that area if he wants to take a step forward. Entering his age-24 season, Wicks should have the inside track on a rotation spot to begin the year, likely slotting in behind Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon and Kyle Hendricks. Wicks has the talent and pedigree to be a solid MLB starter, and while fantasy managers may want to wait a bit until he gets rolling, he could find himself on the radar in short order.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Ruled out through All-Star break

Wicks (oblique) is not expected to return until after the All-Star break, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Wicks was diagnosed with a Grade 2 right oblique strain just under two weeks ago and has not yet been cleared to begin a throwing program. He'll need to be built back up and eventually require a rehab assignment before returning, so the left-hander still looks to be several weeks away.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Has Grade 2 oblique strain

Wicks was diagnosed Saturday with a Grade 2 right oblique strain, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Manager Craig Counsell didn't offer much of a timeline for Wicks' recovery, mentioning only that Wicks was "going to miss some time." However, a Grade 2 sprain likely indicates that Wicks will be sidelined for significantly longer than the minimum 15 days, leaving his rotation spot to Kyle Hendricks for the foreseeable future. Wicks sustained the injury Friday during his first start since April after spending a month on the 15-day injured list due to a forearm injury. The Cubs placed him on the IL prior to Saturday's game against the Cardinals.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: IL move made official

The Cubs placed Wicks on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right oblique strain, Taylor McGregor reports. Wicks had to be pulled from Friday's start against the Cardinals in the second inning due to the injury. It's unclear what grade the strain is, so it's difficult to project a return date. Typically, even low-grade oblique strains result in absences beyond the minimum 15 days. Kyle Hendricks will slide into Wicks' rotation spot.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: IL stint likely

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said after Friday's 3-0 loss to the Cardinals that Wicks will get an MRI for his right oblique and that a stint on the injured list is "likely," Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports. Wicks was lifted from Friday's game after just 1.2 innings due to right oblique discomfort. He was previously on the injured list due to a left forearm strain that kept him out of action for nearly six weeks. Wicks made two appearances since being activated from the IL on June 7, including Friday's start. Kyle Hendricks came in to replace Wicks on Friday, and he figures to enter the Cubs' rotation.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Dealing with oblique injury

Wicks had to be lifted from Friday's start versus the Cardinals because of right oblique discomfort, Marquee Sports Network reports. Wicks recorded just five outs before having to be removed. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said during an in-game interview that the pitcher "felt it pretty good," but the team won't know more until after he's examined following the game. Kyle Hendricks replaced Wicks on Friday and is the obvious candidate to move into the rotation if the young southpaw needs to miss time, which seems likely.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Exits outing with injury

Wicks was removed from Friday's start against the Cardinals in the second inning with an injury, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. Wicks evidently tweaked something while surrendering a Dylan Carlson single with two outs in the second frame. The left-hander recently returned from a flexor strain, although it's not clear at this point whether that's what he might be dealing with again.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Allows one run in relief Saturday

Wicks (forearm) allowed one run on three hits across 3.1 innings of relief in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Reds. He walked one and struck out two. Wicks made his first appearance since April 23 after sustaining a forearm strain in his throwing arm. After coming off the injured list Friday, the lefty was deployed in relief for the first time in the big leagues, as he had served as the team's fifth starter before he got injured. Rookie Ben Brown maintained his spot in the rotation Saturday but was lifted after giving up three runs over four innings, resulting in Wicks getting some extended work behind him. Brown has now been charged with eight earned runs over nine innings across his last two starts, potentially putting his spot in the rotation in jeopardy now that Wicks is back. If the Cubs don't decide to drop Brown from the rotation, Wicks could still have some fantasy value if he ends up working as a piggyback pitcher behind Brown in the latter's subsequent starts.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Rejoining active roster

Wicks (forearm) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Wicks will be back with the Cubs for the first time since late April after sustaining a forearm strain in his throwing arm. He's completed 3.1 innings in each of his last two rehab starts and was stretched out to 65 pitches in his latest appearance. While Wicks previously served as the Cubs' fifth starter, rookie Ben Brown has impressed as part of the rotation and could push Wicks to the bullpen. Before going down, Wicks had a 4.70 ERA across 23.0 innings.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Goes three-plus frames in rehab start

Wicks (forearm) worked 3.1 innings Sunday in his third rehab start for Triple-A Iowa, striking out three while giving up three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks. Wicks has now covered exactly 3.1 innings in consecutive outings for Iowa, though after tossing 52 pitches Tuesday, he built up to 65 pitches (34 strikes) on Sunday. While Hicks no longer appears to be plagued by the left forearm strain that landed him on the 15-day injured list April 28, the Cubs may want to nonetheless have him reach 75 pitches in another rehab start before activating him. Once Wicks is ready to go, the Cubs will have to decide whether to send him or Ben Brown to the bullpen, or keep both pitchers in starting roles as part of a six-man rotation.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Making rehab start Sunday

Wicks (forearm) is scheduled for a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. The 24-year-old covered 3.1 innings during his previous rehab outing Tuesday and will continue building up his workload Sunday with Iowa. It remains to be seen if Wicks will require an additional rehab appearance or if he'll be cleared to rejoin the Cubs.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Making another rehab start

Wicks (forearm) is starting for Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. Wicks will make his second rehab appearance at Triple-A Iowa after going two scoreless innings with three strikeouts Friday. He's still in the process of getting stretched out, so it's expected Wicks will need a couple more rehab starts before being activated.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Set for live BP on Friday

Wicks (forearm) will throw a live batting practice session Friday, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. Wicks has been on the shelf since late April with a left forearm strain but could be cleared to begin a rehab assignment if things go well Friday. Because he hasn't missed that much time, he probably won't need more than one or two rehab starts. However, given his 4.70 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB across 23 innings before going on the IL, he wouldn't seem to be a given to be re-inserted into the Cubs' rotation once he's ready.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Tosses side session Monday

Wicks (forearm) threw a bullpen session Monday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Wicks has been throwing off a mound for about a week after he had been placed on the 15-day injured list April 28 with a left forearm strain. The Cubs haven't yet offered up a concrete target date for his return from the IL, but if Wicks is able to resume facing hitters within the next few days, he'll likely require just one minor-league rehab start -- if any at all -- before being activated. Wicks had gone 1-2 with a 4.70 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB across 23 innings over his five starts before being shut down with the forearm injury.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Cleared for mound work

Wicks (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Tuesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Wicks is just over a week removed from being placed on the injured list with a strained left forearm but is already been cleared for mound work. He'll need to face hitters and will probably be asked to make a rehab start or two before being considered an option to rejoin the Cubs' rotation.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Playing catch

Wicks (forearm) has been cleared to begin playing catch, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports. Wicks just landed on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm strain, so it would seem to be a good sign that he's already throwing again. A potential timeline for his return, however, remains up in the air. Hayden Wesneski is occupying Wicks' spot in the Cubs' rotation.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Won't start due to forearm injury

Wicks won't make Sunday's scheduled start in Boston due to left forearm tightness, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Wicks is coming off his best start of the season, but he seemed to pick up an arm injury either during that outing or in a between-starts throwing session. A stint on the injured list seems likely, but the Cubs could offer more information regarding a potential timetable Sunday. Hayden Wesneski will start Sunday in Wicks' place.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: First quality start of 2024

Wicks (1-2) earned the win Tuesday against the Astros, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out four. Wicks got through five innings for the first time all season Tuesday, picking up his first win in the process. However, he set a season low in strikeouts, bringing his K/9 from 12.7 to 11.0, and he surrendered his second long ball of the campaign in the fifth inning to Jake Meyers. Wicks is lined up to close out a two-start week Sunday at Boston.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Strikes out five in short start

Wicks allowed two runs on five hits over 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. He walked one and struck out five. Wicks pitched well and continued to miss bats at a solid rate, but the Cubs decided to pull him after just 74 pitches. The young lefty logged 126 innings last season across three levels, with only 34.2 of them coming in the majors, so the team is likely just being conservative with his workload in the early going. However, his 24 strikeouts in only 17 innings this year are reason for optimism moving forward. Wicks is penciled in to start again Tuesday against the Astros.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Gets little run support in loss

Wicks (0-1) allowed two runs on six hits across 4.2 innings to take the loss Saturday against the Dodgers. He walked one and struck out seven. Wicks pitched decently against a tough lineup, but the Cubs managed only one run in the 4-1 defeat. The lefty was ineffective with his pitches, needing 100 to retire his 14 batters, which kept him from completing five innings for the second straight start. Wicks does have an impressive 13 strikeouts over 8.2 frames this season, however. He'll carry a 4.15 ERA into his next outing, which is tentatively set for Friday against the Mariners, and aim to pitch a bit deeper into the contest.

  • Cubs' Jordan Wicks: Seems likely to make rotation

Wicks appears to be the favorite to land the No. 5 spot in the Cubs' rotation to start the year, with Javier Assad shifting to the bullpen, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. Wicks, Assad and Hayden Wesneski have been competing for the last starting spot in camp, with the former doing enough to stand out. The lefty has a strong 2.60 ERA across 17.1 Cactus League innings, and he showed flashes of promise during his MLB debut last season. Wicks may endure some ups and downs as a young starter, though he has interesting fantasy upside as long as he remains in the rotation.
