Jose Miranda failed to capitalize on an opportunity to win an everyday role with the Twins amid a shoulder issue and his future role with the organization isn't clear. Despite dealing with a sore shoulder in spring training, Miranda began the season as Minnesota's everyday third baseman. He struggled and was soon sent to Triple-A on May 10 after hitting just .220/.275/.318. Miranda wasn't much better at Triple-A, where he hit just .255/.326/.360 in 39 games. His shoulder issues soon resurfaced and he had season-ending surgery in September. Miranda was a late bloomer in the minors where he hit .344/.401/.572 with 30 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A in 2021 at age 23. He then hit .287 with a .797 OPS in his final 106 games in 2022. The above-average power he displayed in 2022 cratered in 2023 (just a .092 IS0) though he maintained a good strikeout rate (15.8% K%). Meanwhile, Royce Lewis returned from a torn ACL and established himself at third base and several other corner infield prospects emerged. He'll need to show his sharp decline last season was due to the shoulder injury in order to factor into the corner infield mix again.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Another three hits, three RBI

Miranda went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI in Wednesday's win over the Diamondbacks while also drawing a walk. Miranda kicked off the scoring for Minnesota with a three-run double in the second and went on to reach base four times in the contest - something he's done twice now in his last three games. It marked the third time that the third baseman has driven in three runs and logged multiple hits over his last five contests, increasing his average to .329 in June. Miranda has also drawn a walk in four straight games.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Belts three-run homer

Miranda went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run Thursday against the Rays. Miranda's clutch homer came with two on and two out in the ninth inning to tie the game and send it into extra innings. It was the eighth blast of the season for Miranda, who continues to distance himself from last year's nightmarish campaign that included a .566 OPS. The third-year pro is now slashing .280/.317/.477 with eight homers, 12 doubles, a triple, 27 RBI, 23 runs and a steal over 205 plate appearances.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Getting day off

Miranda is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. Miranda will head to the bench Wednesday, but he should have a relatively firm grasp on a near-everyday role for the Twins after Minnesota recently optioned Alex Kirilloff (back) to the minors before reversing the transaction and placing him on the 10-day injured list. The 26-year-old has earned his way into steadier playing time by maintaining an .875 OPS through his first 15 games of June.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Breather in Game 2

Miranda is not in the starting lineup for Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader with the Athletics. Miranda will head to the bench after he went 2-for-4 in the team's 6-2 win in Game 1. Trevor Larnach will slot in at designated hitter while Manuel Margot enters the lineup in left field and bats seventh against Oakland.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Starts at first base, bats third

Miranda will start at first base and bat third in Tuesday's game against the Yankees. Miranda has been the Twins' primary third baseman for the last few weeks, but that position will be unavailable most days now with Royce Lewis back from the injured list. However, it would appear to be a good sign for Miranda that he remains in the lineup in a prominent spot even with Lewis back in the fold. Miranda has an .883 OPS with four home runs over his last 50 plate appearances.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Homers, doubles in game-winner

Miranda went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored Sunday against the Astros. Miranda collected his 10th multi-hit game of the season, homering in the sixth to knot the game at three, then adding a go-ahead RBI double in the eighth that served as the game-winner for the Twins. After struggling to a .211 average in 40 games last season, Miranda has fared much better this season, posting a slash line of .280/.311/.469 with six homers, nine doubles, 20 RBI and 19 runs through 151 plate appearances.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Playing time picking up

Miranda will start at third base and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Rangers. Willi Castro looked as though he would settle in as the Twins' primary third baseman after Byron Buxton returned from the injured list around the middle of May, but Minnesota has instead kept Castro in the regular lineup by moving him all over the outfield. As a result, Miranda has gained traction at the hot corner of late; Sunday will mark his ninth consecutive start at the position. Miranda has earned the playing time by producing a .986 OPS over his last eight starts, but he could nonetheless see his opportunities decrease by the end of next week, when Royce Lewis (quadricep) could be back from the IL.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Retreating to bench Monday

Miranda is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Mariners. Miranda should be an indirect beneficiary from a playing-time standpoint while Byron Buxton (knee) is on the 10-day injured list, as Miranda had started at third base in each of the previous three games while Willi Castro moved to the outfield to help cover for Buxton's absence. However, Castro will draw the start at the hot corner Monday, opening up center field for Manuel Margot.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Gets third straight start

Miranda will start at third base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Carlos Correa's return from the 10-day injured list Monday appeared to have pushed Miranda back into a reserve role, but the 25-year-old has since seen his playing time pick back up after Byron Buxton (knee) landed on the IL on Friday. With Willi Castro shifting to the outfield to cover for Buxton, Miranda has started at the hot corner in all three games this weekend.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Doubles twice in win

Miranda went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI in Sunday's victory over the Angels. Miranda opened the game's scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning. He later drove in Minnesota's 11th and final run of the game with an RBI double in the eighth. Miranda has collected multiple hits in three straight games, going 7-for-13 (.538) with four extra-base hits in the process. His slash line is up to .292/.320/.500 through 16 games.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Homers in win

Miranda went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in Thursday's 6-3 win over the White Sox. Miranda hasn't been able to get on base since getting called up April 8, as he entered Thursday hitting just .200 (7-for-35) with one walk in 13 games. He'll need to keep on a roll to get regular time at third base. However, Kyle Farmer is slumping even worse with a .297 OPS as the Twins struggle to find production at third base in the absence of Royce Lewis (quadriceps).

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Blasts first homer

Miranda went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI during the Twins' 7-4 loss to the Orioles. Miranda came into the game with just two hits in 13 at-bats but topped that mark with three hits Monday to go along with a 411-foot blast to left-center that represented his first home run of the season. The 26-year-old Miranda was recalled on April 8 with Monday's game representing his fifth start and seventh appearance since rejoining the big club. He followed up a strong rookie campaign in 2022 by struggling significantly last season and failing to make the club out of camp this season. However, until Royce Lewis (quad) returns, Miranda should continue to see a decent amount of playing time.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Won't be regular third baseman

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said Monday that Miranda could play third base "maybe a couple times a week," Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. Miranda is starting at third base Monday versus the Dodgers after being recalled earlier in the day, and there is an opening for playing time there while Royce Lewis (quad) is sidelined. However, the Twins see Miranda as mainly a first baseman and designated hitter at this point, and those positions are more difficult to crack right now. In other words, it sounds like he'll be a part-time player for the time being.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Joining big-league club

The Twins recalled Miranda from Triple-A St. Paul on Monday. The 25-year-old missed out on Minnesota's Opening Day roster but will join the big club less than two weeks into the season. Miranda is unlikely to see significant playing time, but he could be an injury away from a more regular role since Royce Lewis (quadriceps) is already out for the foreseeable future.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Hits homer in Triple-A opener

Miranda went 2-for-4 with a home run in Saturday's season-opening win for Triple-A St. Paul. He started at first base. There's been conflicting reports about whether Miranda is at full strength to be able to throw from third base after offseason surgery to remove scar tissue from his right labrum and rotator cuff. He's set to play first base for St. Paul initially this season. As a result, he's not seen as a short-term option to help fill the void at third base with the Twins after the quad injury to Royce Lewis. Miranda could help force the issue if he continues his hot start to the season.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Collects two hits Monday

Miranda (shoulder) went 2-for-3 with one double, one RBI and one run scored in Monday's exhibition against the Yankees. He started at DH and the Twins plan to ease him into action for a few weeks before using him at first base or third base, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Miranda underwent offseason surgery to remove scar tissue from his right labrum and rotator cuff, and he's since been cleared for game action. He looked sharp in his chances at the dish Monday, as he collected a base knock in the top of the first inning and doubled home the first run of the game in the third. Now that Miranda has returned to health, he'll set his sights on earning playing time either at the hot corner behind Royce Lewis or at first base, where he'll compete with Carlos Santana and Alex Kirilloff.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Begins throwing

Miranda (shoulder) began throwing in mid-January, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Miranda had surgery in early October to remove scar tissue from his right labrum and rotator cuff. He was cleared to begin hitting in early December and recently progressed to hitting off a pitching machine and throwing. The plan is for Miranda to be eased into game action this spring at designated hitter before eventually playing the field. All 35 of Miranda's starts during his injury-shortened, disappointing 2023 season came at third base, but his best shot at playing time in 2024 could be at first.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Moves to 60-day IL

The Twins transferred Miranda (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Friday. Miranda was already expected to be out until late September, but his move to the 60-day IL ensures he's out until at least Sept. 15. His spot on the 40-man roster will be filled by Andrew Stevenson, who was selected from Triple-A St. Paul on Friday.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Plasma injection in shoulder

Miranda received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his injured right shoulder and will be shut down for at least a week before the Twins determine the next course of action, John Shipley of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. An MRI exam on Miranda's shoulder revealed an impingement. It sounds like he'll be out several more weeks as a result even in a best-case scenario.

  • Twins' Jose Miranda: Heading to IL with shoulder issue

Miranda is likely to be placed on the 10-day injured list due to a sore shoulder, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. MIranda was scratched with the issue before Friday's game. Miranda has been bothered by the shoulder since spring training and it's a bad sign he had a setback after resting during the All-Star break. Matt Wallner is likely to be recalled from Triple-A, with Kyle Farmer, Willi Castro and Donovan Solano likely to split time at third base until Royce Lewis returns.
