While he may not look the part, TJ Friedl became a fantasy darling last season with a .279/.352/.467 line, 18 homers and 27 steals in 556 plate appearances. He projects to be the Reds' everyday center fielder after a surprising 4.4 fWAR season, but Friedl will continue to have his doubters even with his high contact rate given the fact that his xSLG, average exit velocity and barrel rate all ranked in the bottom seven percent of the league, among other reasons. Friedl did a disproportionate amount of his damage at home, managing a .724 OPS on the road. He hit lefty pitching well, but he was rather fortunate in that regard (.425 BABIP) and some giveback against same-side pitching should be expected. Signed in 2016 as an undrafted free agent -- there were 40 rounds back in 2016 -- Friedl has made a career out of proving people wrong. If he continues to do so, he will reach folk hero status in Cincinnati and fantasy circles.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Likely to miss 2-to-3 weeks

Reds manager David Bell said Monday that he expects Friedl (hamstring) to return from the 10-day injured list in 2-to-3 weeks, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Cincinnati placed Friedl on the IL on Monday after he aggravated a left hamstring strain in Sunday's 7-4 loss to Boston. The Reds called up Levi Jordan from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move to burnish their depth in the outfield, but Stuart Fairchild could be given the first opportunity to replace Friedl as the club's everyday center fielder.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Back to IL with strained hamstring

The Reds placed Friedl on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right hamstring strain. Friedl initially tweaked the hamstring a week ago and missed two games before returning to action, but he aggravated the injury in Sunday's 7-4 loss to Boston. The trip to the IL is the third this season for Friedl, who also missed time with wrist and thumb injuries. It's not clear how long he might be sidelined.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Ends hitless skid

Friedl went 2-for-5 in Saturday's 4-3 loss to Boston. Friedl's fifth-inning single snapped an 0-for-16 run. Later in the same inning, Friedl was thrown out at home trying to score on an infield grounder -- one of three baserunning miscues in the game. After missing most of the first two months of the season due to injuries, Friedl is healthy and has started 19 of the 21 games since returning from a second stint on the injured list in late May.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Back in Cincinnati lineup

Friedl will start in center field and bat leadoff in Friday's game versus the Red Sox. Friedl missed two games after his hamstring tightened up on him Monday, but he's ready to go now following the Reds' team off day Thursday. Although he's slashed just .214/.320/.381 so far in an injury-shortened season, Friedl does have four home runs and six stolen bases over 97 plate appearances.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Remains out Wednesday

Friedl (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates. He'll take a seat for the second day in a row while he recovers from a tight hamstring, which he sustained while making a diving catch in the fifth inning of Monday's 4-1 loss to Pittsburgh. The Reds seem to be viewing Friedl as day-to-day, but a trip to the injured list could become more realistic if he isn't ready to play coming out of Thursday's off day. Friedl's absence Wednesday will open up a spot in the outfield for Stuart Fairchild.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Idle Tuesday

Friedl (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Pirates. Friedl was removed from Monday's loss in the fifth inning after sustaining a hamstring injury. While it's only considered tightness, Friedl will be held out of Tuesday's lineup as Stuart Fairchild will bat leadoff and play center field instead. Friedl could return for Wednesday's series finale, but with a team day off Thursday, the Reds could opt to play it safe with the 28-year-old.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Dealing with hamstring injury

Friedl suffered a hamstring injury and exited Monday's 4-1 loss to the Pirates in the bottom of the fifth inning, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Friedl made a diving catch in center field, robbing Nick Gonzales of an extra-base hit in the bottom of the fifth and injuring his hamstring in the process. Manager David Bell said Friedl had a full range of motion and strength, stating that the hamstring was "just tight." The outfielder's status will be worth monitoring ahead of Tuesday's matchup with Pittsburgh, but it appears as if Friedl avoided a significant injury.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Blasts third homer, steals base

Friedl went 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Cubs. Friedl drove in three of the Reds' four runs on a two-run homer off Ben Brown in the third and an RBI groundout in the fifth. Friedl reached base again on a walk in the eighth and added his fifth stolen base of the season. The 28-year-old has struggled to stay healthy this season, but he's now started in 10 straight games since his latest IL stint. The center fielder has three homers, 13 RBI and five stolen bases in just 16 games this year.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Launches first homer

Friedl went 1-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in Sunday's 5-2 win over the Cubs. Friedl provided all the Reds would need in the second inning when he bopped a two-out, three-run home run to give Cincinnati a 4-0 lead. It was the first home run of the season for Friedl, who is coming back from a second stint on the injured list and has played just 10 games this season. As he gets more plate appearances -- just 43 so far -- Friedl's timing should get better and he should improve on his .167 average.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Moves down in order vs. lefty

Friedl batted seventh and went 0-for-1 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Cubs. He was also hit by a pitch. Friedl, who had batted leadoff since returning from a thumb injury Wednesday, was lowered to seventh in the order Saturday. That's due to the Reds facing a left-hander for the first time since his return. Friedl is 1-for-9 with four walks, one steal and one run scored since being activated off the injured list.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Hitless in return

Friedl went 0-for-3 with two walks in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to St. Louis. Friedl was activated off the injured list Wednesday after successfully rehabbing a thumb injury. He resumed his roles as the team's starting center fielder and leadoff hitter. It's been a season of stops and starts thus far for Friedl, who was back only six games from a wrist injury when he injured the thumb. The Reds and fantasy managers alike are hoping for his sustained presence in the lineup.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Lands on IL with fractured thumb

The Reds placed Friedl on the 10-day injured list Monday due to a fractured left thumb. Friedl left Sunday's 6-5 loss to the Giants after being hit by a pitch in the top of the first inning. The injury was initially reported as a contusion, but further tests revealed fractures in his left thumb. Friedl started the season on the IL with a fractured right wrist, and he appeared in just six major-league games after being activated May 7. In Friedl's absence, Will Benson could return to the leadoff spot against righties. The Reds recalled outfielder Jacob Hurtubise from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Dealing with thumb injury

Friedl suffered a right thumb contusion in Sunday's matchup with the Giants, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Friedl was hit by a pitch in the top of the first inning and exited the contest after not feeling well in the batting cages. The outfielder appears to have avoided any fractures in his thumb, so he can be considered day-to-day for the time being.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Leaves game after HBP

Friedl left Sunday's game against the Giants after being hit by a pitch on the left thumb area in the top of the first inning, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Friedl spent a fair amount of time with Cincinnati's trainer, and while he stayed in the game initially, he didn't feel good in the cages between innings, per the Reds' television broadcast. The 28-year-old had just returned from a right wrist injury suffered on a diving attempt during spring training, so it's not the same hand, but regardless he will likely need X-rays.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Makes season debut

Friedl started in center field, batted leadoff and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Diamondbacks. Friedl made his season debut Tuesday after opening the season on the injured list due to a wrist injury. He was unable to change the team's recent fortunes -- the Reds lost their sixth straight and have scored 10 runs during that stretch -- but that's a lot of pressure to put on any player returning from a wrist injury, which can be tricky. He'll return to his everyday role as Cincinnati's leadoff hitter and center fielder.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Officially activated

Friedl (wrist) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. Friedl has been cleared for big-league action after missing the first month and change of the 2024 campaign with a fractured right wrist. His reinstatement aligns with the start of a three-game homestand against the Diamondbacks, where he'll likely replace Stuart Fairchild as the Reds' primary center fielder versus right-handed pitching. In four rehab starts at Triple-A Louisville, Friedl went 4-for-16 (.250) with three doubles, three runs scored and a pair of RBI.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Could return Tuesday

Friedl (wrist) and team decision-makers were scheduled for a call Sunday evening to discuss the outfielder's potential return, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Friedl, who made a fourth consecutive appearance Sunday on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville, could be activated as soon as Tuesday, when the Reds open a three-game series at home against the Diamondbacks. "There is a chance," manager David Bell said. "I think we are all going to be involved in that decision." Friedl fractured his right wrist while diving for a ball March 16 and opened the season on the injured list. He's 4-for-16 with three doubles while on rehab with the Bats.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Begins rehab assignment

Friedl (wrist) began a rehab assignment Thursday and is 1-for-7 with a walk over two games for Triple-A Louisville. Friedl, batting in his customary leadoff spot, played seven innings at shortstop Thursday and a full game Friday as the designated hitter. Reds manager David Bell told Mike Petraglia of MLB.com that he'll have a better idea of Friedl's return timeline by the end of the weekend.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Cleared for rehab assignment

Friedl (wrist) was sent to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday to begin a rehab assignment, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Friedl suffered a small fracture of the distal radius of his right wrist back in mid-March, but he's finally made enough progress in order to be cleared to play in games. Given how much time he's missed, Friedl will likely require a good number of rehab at-bats in the minors before returning from the 10-day injured list. The Reds' outfield situation is already crowded, but Friedl should play on a regular basis -- at least against right-handed pitching -- once he's activated.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Ramping up at complex

Friedl (wrist) is ramping up baseball activities at the team's complex in Goodyear (Ariz.) and could begin playing games as a defensive player only this weekend, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. After serving as a defensive player only, Friedl could move onto bunting in games and possibly a rehab assignment by the middle of next week. Cincinnati manager David Bell said he'll need between one and two weeks before being ready to return, noting the need to build up at-bats.
