There were fewer high-profile busts in 2024 than Bo Bichette. Bichette's 2024 season was ruined by a calf injury and later a finger injury that required offseason surgery, so even when he did play, the results were terrible. Bichette was coming off a three-year run of volume peaking with the nomadic 2021 ballpark situation, which helped his overall numbers, as every counting category for him has since declined each of the past four seasons. You know things were tough for Bichette when he hit .225 on the season after never hitting below .275 at any level of professional baseball before that. Bichette is entering the final year of full team control with Toronto. A fully healthy Bichette could hit leadoff in 2025, which could help him produce somewhere along his 2022-2023 span of production. The 2021 season simply is not repeatable because the run environments in Dunedin and Buffalo were contributing factors, which are no longer in play, as Rogers Centre, even with its new configurations, is much more neutral. The 2024 season was terrible, but you should look to pounce if you see his market value is too heavily affected by recency bias.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Three more hits Thursday

Bichette went 3-for-4 in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays. While all three hits were singles, it was still another strong effort at the plate from the shortstop as he looks to put his shaky 2024 behind him. Bichette is batting a cool .400 (18-for-45) this spring with three doubles, four homers and a 4:6 BB:K, and the only blemish on his Grapefruit League performance has been a 1-for-3 showing on the basepaths.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Swipes first bag of spring

Bichette went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta. Getting a look in the leadoff spot, Bichette stole his first bag of the spring. The 27-year-old shortstop could see significant time at the top of the order in 2025, especially if he quickly erases memories of his rough 2024, and he did steal 38 bases combined in 2021-22 before running mostly disappeared from his skill set over the last two seasons. Bichette is having a big spring as he looks for a clean slate at the plate, batting .351 (13-for-37) with three doubles, two homers and a 2:6 BB:K.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Could bat leadoff or cleanup

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Thursday that Bichette could bat leadoff or cleanup this season, "depending on who we're facing," Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports. Schneider has decided on Vladimir Guerrero in the No. 2 hole and Anthony Santander in the No. 3 spot, but who bats before them and after them is not yet written in ink. Bichette has spent the vast majority of his career hitting second, but his 106 starts in the cleanup spot are the second most of any position in the batting order. George Springer has been the club's regular leadoff man during his four seasons in Toronto but might bat lower in the order in 2025.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Clubs first spring homer

Bichette went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. The shortstop crushed a Tanner Banks pitch down the left-field line in the third inning for his first long ball of the spring. Bichette appears laser-focused on putting his rough 2024 season behind him, going 5-for-16 (.313) with two doubles, plus Sunday's homer, through his first six Grapefruit League games.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Back in action after finger surgery

Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed Thursday that Bichette is a "full go" for spring training after making a full recovery from September surgery to address a fractured right middle finger, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Bichette needed to have a pin inserted during surgery to stabilize his finger, but Schneider relayed that the pin was removed long ago, and the veteran shortstop feels normal heading into camp. The 2024 campaign was by far the worst of the 26-year-old's six-year MLB career, as his OPS plummeted to .599 after he had delivered marks north of .800 in each of the prior five seasons. Bichette also continued his trend of halting his involvement in the running game; he was held to five stolen bases for the second season in a row after pilfering 25 bags in 2021 and 13 in 2022. Better health in 2025 could allow Bichette to bounce back to some degree after he also had two separate stints on the injured list last season due to calf strains, but fantasy managers shouldn't bank on him fully re-emerging as the five-category standout he was in 2021 and 2022.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Undergoing surgery on finger

Bichette will undergo surgery Wednesday to have a pin inserted into his fractured right middle finger, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. The pin will ensure the finger heals correctly. Bichette is expected to make a full recovery from surgery by the time spring training rolls around. The 26-year-old was limited to just 81 games in 2024 due to injury, slashing a disappointing .225/.277/.322 with four home runs.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Meeting with hand specialist

Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Monday that Bichette (finger) traveled to Arizona this week to meet with a hand specialist, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports. Bichette has already been ruled out for the season with a fractured right middle finger, but the consultation with the specialist should help the infielder determine whether or not he'll need surgery to address the injury. Regardless of whether he gets surgery, Bichette should be back to full health in advance of spring training. The 26-year-old is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2025 season and could be a trade candidate this winter, though the Blue Jays may prefer to have Bichette rebuild some value after he posted a career-worst .599 OPS over 336 plate appearances in 2024.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Season over due to fractured finger

The Blue Jays placed Bichette on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a fractured right middle finger, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Bichette was scratched from the lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Rangers due to what the team initially referred to as a finger contusion. However, subsequent testing has revealed a fracture, which will end the shortstop's season. Injuries have limited Bichette to just 81 games in 2024, and he slashed a disappointing .225/.277/.322 with four home runs during that time. Ernie Clement and Leo Jimenez will handle shortstop for the Blue Jays down the stretch with Bichette out.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Scratched Wednesday

Bichette was scratched from Wednesday's lineup against the Rangers due to a right middle finger contusion, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Bichette went 2-for-5 with an RBI in his return from the injured list Tuesday, but he'll be prevented from playing Wednesday as he deals with a bruised finger. His absence will move Ernie Clement from third base to shortstop, and Addison Barger will enter the starting nine to start at the hot corner.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Returns from IL

The Blue Jays reinstated Bichette (calf) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Bichette went 4-for-14 with two RBI and a run scored across four games during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo. With a .595 OPS, the 25-year-old infielder is enduring his worst season at the plate over his six-year MLB career, but he figures to reclaim his role as Toronto's everyday shortstop now that he's healthy. Will Wagner (knee) was placed on the 60-day IL in a corresponding move.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Beginning rehab assignment Tuesday

Manager John Schneider said Friday that the plan is for Bichette (calf) to join Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Bichette is expected to need 4-5 games with the affiliate before he's cleared to rejoin the big-league roster. Sidelined since mid-July with a right calf strain, Bichette has been able to run the bases several times this week and will remain with the Blue Jays in Atlanta through the weekend. He's in the midst of a down year with a .222/.275/.320 slash line through 80 games, and there are questions about his future in Toronto.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Closing in on rehab assignment

Bichette (calf) ran the bases Monday and will do so again Wednesday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Running the bases marks a big step forward for Bichette as he works his way back from a right calf strain which initially cropped up nearly two months ago. Bichette will travel with the Blue Jays to Atlanta this weekend to continue ramping up and is expected to be ready for a rehab assignment soon. He's tracking toward a return from the injured list by mid-September.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Works out at Fenway Park

Bichette (calf) traveled with the Blue Jays on their road trip and was spotted fielding grounders at Fenway Park prior to Tuesday's game against the Red Sox, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Bichette will continue to work out with the team on its trip before eventually heading out on a rehab assignment. The shortstop's return to game action in the minors doesn't look to be imminent, however, so he realistically won't be ready to return from the 10-day injured list until at least mid-September. He's been shelved since late July with a moderate right calf strain.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Resumes running

Manager John Schneider said Thursday that Bichette (calf) has resumed running at the team's complex in Florida, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Bichette had been limited to hitting and fielding drills over the past several days, but his return to running marks a significant checkpoint in his recovery from a right calf strain. He's slated to join the Blue Jays in Boston on Monday and travel with the team during their road trip, after which he could potentially head to the minor leagues on a rehab assignment.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Resumes baseball activities

Bichette (calf) has resumed baseball activities at the Blue Jays' spring training complex in Florida, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Bichette will remain in Florida for a while to ramp back up before the Blue Jays consider a rehab assignment, so he looks to be multiple weeks away from a return. Leo Jimenez has been filling in at shortstop since Bichette was sidelined in late July with a moderate right calf strain.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: To miss multiple weeks

An MRI on Saturday revealed Bichette's right calf strain to be moderate, and he'll miss multiple weeks due to the injury, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Bichette strained his calf Friday for the second time this month and was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier Saturday. Further testing revealed the injury will require a multi-week absence, keeping the star shortstop sidelined into August. In his stead, Leo Jimenez should handle most of the shortstop work, though Addison Barger and Ernie Clement could mix in at the position.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Lands on injured list

The Blue Jays placed Bichette on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right calf strain, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Bichette didn't land on the injured list immediately after straining his calf July 10, but after suffering a recurrence of the injury just nine days later, he'll now hit the IL in order to properly recover. Addison Barger was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move, though it will be Leo Jimenez starting most days at shortstop while Bichette is sidelined.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Absent from Saturday's lineup

Bichette (calf) isn't in the Blue Jays' lineup for Saturday's game against the Tigers. Bichette left Friday's contest early after straining his right calf for the second time this month, and he's slated to undergo an MRI to determine whether his injury is severe enough to warrant a trip to the injured list. Leo Jimenez will start at shortstop instead Saturday and would likely continue to do so should Bichette end up on the IL.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Suffers calf strain

Bichette left Friday's game against the Tigers due to a right calf strain. Bichette wasn't able to put any weight on his right leg after lining out to right field in the sixth inning, and he's now officially been diagnosed with a strained right calf -- the same injury that caused him to miss the last four games before the All-Star break. The Blue Jays didn't place him on the IL after his initial strain, but there's a good chance he spends some time on the injured list this time around in order to properly address the issue. Leo Jimenez will presumably take over as Toronto's starting shortstop while Bichette recovers.

  • Blue Jays' Bo Bichette: Back in Toronto lineup Friday

Bichette (calf) will start at shortstop and bat fifth in Friday's game against the Tigers. Bichette missed the final four games of the first half with a strained right calf, but the additional rest over the All-Star break appears to have been enough to get him healthy. The shortstop will carry a disappointing .596 OPS into the second half.
