San Francisco has a strong track record of taking pitching castoffs from other organizations and making them into useful assets. In the case of Jake Junis, it was almost an extreme makeover because Kansas City's pitching development did little to make Junis better and even Junis's first year with the Giants could only get so much out of him as a starter. The club decided to turn Junis into a reliever in 2023 and he rewarded them and NL Only fantasy managers with a 20.4% K-BB% along with 96 strikeouts in 86 innings and 4 wins. The righty's best pitch has always been his slider, so the Giants encouraged him to spin it early and often, and he did so throwing it 62.5% of the time. It is a good thing he did too because his sinker was safely put into play 42% of the time and his changeup 27% of the time. Junis is at his best in a White Castle Special of heavy sliders, but the lack of an effective second pitch pigeonholes his role in the pen.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Covers three innings Saturday

Junis tossed three innings out of the bullpen in Saturday's 6-4 loss to the Padres, giving up two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out two. Though it might not have been manager Pat Murphy's plan heading into the day, Junis essentially piggybacked starter Carlos F. Rodriguez, who was pulled from the contest after laboring through four innings and racking up 72 pitches. Meanwhile, Junis -- who was making his first appearance since April 2 following his recent reinstatement from the 60-day injured list -- was far more efficient, needing just 39 pitches to record nine outs while largely steering clear of damage until Kyle Higashioka took him deep in the seventh inning for a two-run home run. With Rodriguez now 0-3 with a 7.30 ERA through his first three big-league starts, it wouldn't be surprising if the Brewers optioned him to Triple-A Nashville to open up a starting spot for Junis, who had previously been part of the Opening Day rotation before landing on the shelf in April.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Reinstated from IL

The Brewers activated Junis (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Friday. After winning a spot in Milwaukee's Opening Day rotation, Junis made only one start before being placed on the IL with a pinched nerve in his throwing shoulder. A few weeks later, his recovery was delayed after he was hit in the head by a ball during batting practice. Two months later, Junis will finally return to Milwaukee's active roster after he covered 4.1 innings over two rehab appearances with Triple-A Nashville before throwing a four-inning simulated game earlier this week. The right-hander is expected to work out of the bullpen as a long-relief option for now before eventually re-entering the rotation. Bradley Blalock was optioned to Double-A Biloxi in a corresponding move.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Looking at relief role initially

Junis (shoulder) will be activated from the 60-day injured list for this weekend's series in San Diego, but he could be used in relief initially, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Officially, the Brewers are saying Junis' role is to be determined. However, they've already listed Bryse Wilson, Colin Rea, Carlos F. Rodriguez and Tobias Myers as their four starters for the series with the Padres. Rodriguez would seem to be the most at risk of losing his rotation spot, so Junis could end up replacing him if Rodriguez falters in Saturday's start. The right-handed Junis threw four innings in a simulated game earlier this week, so he's stretched out for a possible long-relief appearance this weekend.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Expected to join team in San Diego

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Monday that Junis (shoulder) is expected to return from the 60-day injured list during the team's four-game road series against the Padres that begins Thursday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Junis will meet the team in San Diego, barring any discomfort following his simulated game in Arizona on Monday. The 31-year-old has been on the injured list since April 6 with a right shoulder impingement and had his return further delayed when he was struck in the head by a ball during the Brewers' April 22 batting practice session. He looks to have recovered from both injuries, however, and appears to be on the cusp of a return to the major-league roster. Given that Junis already built up to four innings in a sim game prior to Monday's outing, he should be a candidate to join the Brewers' depleted rotation this weekend.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Could join Brewers next week

Junis (shoulder) will pitch another sim game in Arizona on Monday before potentially joining the Brewers roster, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The Brewers embark on a seven-game West Coast road trip Monday, playing three games in Los Angeles and four in San Diego. Already in Arizona, Junis could rejoin the team during that stretch, though it's unclear if he'd immediately return to the rotation or would be eased in with a bullpen role. The 31-year-old was moved to Arizona from Triple-A Nashville due to velocity concerns and most recently threw a four-inning simulated game Wednesday.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Simulated game set for Wednesday

Junis (shoulder) will throw a four-inning simulated game Wednesday in Arizona, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Junis made a 2.1-inning rehab start Saturday with Triple-A Nashville, but his velocity wasn't where he and the Brewers hoped. If his velocity bounces back during Wednesday's simulated game, it's possible he could be cleared to return from the 60-day injured list next week. Junis has been sidelined since early April, first with a right shoulder impingement and then with a head injury that occurred when he was hit by a ball during batting practice. The Brewers could have a spot in their injury-ravaged rotation available for Junis once he returns from the IL, though the team may prefer to ease him back into the mix in a multi-inning role out of the bullpen.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Covers two innings in rehab start

Junis (shoulder/head) struck out three over two perfect innings in his rehab start Tuesday with Triple-A Nashville. According to MLB.com, Brewers manager Pat Murphy said that Junis reported no issues with his shoulder coming out of the rehab appearance, his first at any level since he was placed on the injured list April 6. The Brewers haven't yet decided on a role for Junis once he's ready to come off the 60-day IL, but with injuries beginning to pile up in the rotation, the right-hander could slot into a starting role once he gets fully stretched out in the minors. After throwing 21 pitches Tuesday, Junis is expected to increase his workload when he makes his second appearance for Nashville on Saturday.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Cleared for rehab assignment

Junis (shoulder/head) is headed to Triple-A Nashville to begin a rehab assignment, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The specific date of Junis' first rehab start with Nashville isn't clear, but it's imminent. Junis has been on the shelf since early April, first with a right shoulder impingement and then with a head injury that occurred when he was hit by a ball during batting practice. It's not clear how many rehab starts he might require, but it should be at least a couple given how long he's been out.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: On mend from batted ball to head

Junis (shoulder) resumed traveling with the Brewers and said Friday that he's feeling better after he was struck in the head by a batted ball during the batting practice in Pittsburgh on Monday, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Junis was sent to a Pittsburgh-area hospital for further evaluation after he was struck by a ball off the bat of Pirates infielder Alika Williams prior to Monday's series opener. Fortunately for Junis, an MRI and CT scan both returned clean, so his buildup program for his recovery from a right shoulder impingement should be relatively uninterrupted. Junis' lone appearance with Milwaukee prior to being shelved with the shoulder injury came as a starter, but Brewers manager Pat Murphy recently suggested that the right-hander might return from the IL in a relief role.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Hit in head with ball during BP

Junis (shoulder) was struck in the head by a ball during batting practice in Pittsburgh on Monday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Junis was down on the field for several minutes after a ball hit by a Pirates player caught him in the head. He was alert and responsive after eventually getting to his feet and was taken to an area hospital for evaluation. Junis is currently on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement and had recently began a throwing program.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Not close to returning

Junis (shoulder) remains limited to throwing on flat ground, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Junis will be eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list this weekend, but it doesn't sound like he's close to returning. The 31-year-old is in the early stages of ramping things back up as he works his way back from a right shoulder impingement.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Lands on IL

The Brewers placed Junis on the 15-day injured list Saturday, retroactive to Wednesday, with a right shoulder impingement. Junis first reported a problem with his shoulder shortly after his start Tuesday against the Twins. The 31-year-old righty underwent imaging Friday, and although the results came back clean, the Brewers won't risk pushing it. The plan is for him to rest for a couple days before ramping back up, so an extended stay on the IL doesn't seem likely. Aaron Ashby was recalled from Triple-A Nashville in a corresponding move and will presumably take Junis' spot in Milwaukee's rotation.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Next start in doubt

Junis has been dealing with a shoulder issue since his last start Tuesday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Brewers manager Pat Murphy said the team is still waiting for imaging results to come back on Junis' shoulder, which will offer more information on whether or not the right-hander will be able to make his next start -- tentatively scheduled for Monday versus the Reds. Should Junis miss his turn through the rotation, Aaron Ashby will come up from Triple-A Nashville to take his place.

  • Brewers' Jakob Junis: Dealing with shoulder injury

Junis didn't pitch as scheduled Friday due to a shoulder injury, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Manager Pat Murphy said the team doesn't believe Junis' injury to be serious, but the Brewers will likely play it safe with the right-hander. Junis has posted a 5.91 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 10.2 innings this spring, but his chances at making Milwaukee's Opening Day rotation increased significantly after the Brewers optioned Aaron Ashby to Triple-A Nashville on Friday.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Out for season

The Giants placed Junis on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a cervical strain, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Junis was taken out of his appearance Saturday against the Dodgers after reporting neck tightness, and he will now be held out for the final week of the season. The 31-year-old righty logged a 3.87 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through 86 innings while posting a 96:21 K:BB. Joey Bart was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to fill Junis' roster spot.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Exits with neck tightness

Junis was lifted from Saturday's game against the Dodgers with neck tightness, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Junis was supposed to work in bulk relief for the Giants, but he covered just 1.1 innings before departing with the neck issue. Ross Stripling, another bulk relief option, replaced him to begin the bottom of the fifth. It's unclear what Junis' availability will be leading into the final week of the regular season.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Covers most innings Tuesday

Junis allowed two runs on four hits and one walk while striking out two over 2.2 innings during Tuesday's 11-8 loss to the Cubs. He did not factor in the decision. Junis led the Giants' staff in both innings pitched and pitches (44; 27 strikes), though it was far from a true bulk assignment. The right-hander remains a versatile option out of the bullpen, but he has been pitching roughly every fifth day for a few weeks. Junis has a 3.97 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 88:20 K:BB across 79.1 innings over 37 appearances (four starts). Given the length of Tuesday's outing, he could be available some time over the weekend against the Rockies, though he would line up to make his next outing versus the Guardians.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Getting start Thursday

Junis will start for the Giants on Thursday at San Diego, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Junis has primarily worked as a multi-inning reliever this season and will probably be piggybacked Thursday by Sean Manaea. San Francisco has a TBA listed for Friday's game against the Padres, then it'll be Kyle Harrison (Saturday) and Alex Cobb (Sunday) in the final two games of the four-game series.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Struggles as opener

Junis allowed two unearned runs on two hits and struck out one without walking a batter over 1.2 innings Sunday versus Atlanta. He did not factor in the decision. Junis was responsible for Orlando Arcia's second-inning two-run home run, but Wilmer Flores quickly got Junis off the hook in the third. This was a 43-pitch outing for the right-hander, which came after he threw 62 pitches Tuesday. While he's been in the mix to serve as an opener or bulk reliever, Junis is unlikely to work deep enough into games to get wins when he's starting. He's at a 4.00 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 82:18 K:BB through 69.2 innings over 33 appearances (three starts) this year.

  • Giants' Jakob Junis: Pitches well Tuesday

Junis allowed two hits and a walk while striking out seven over four shutout innings Tuesday versus the Rays. He did not factor in the decision. Junis threw 62 pitches (43 strikes) in a sharp outing, his fourth scoreless appearance in his last five trips to the mound. The right-hander continues to fill a swingman role, something that's suited the Giants well with a number of their pitchers this season. Junis is at a 4.10 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 81:18 K:BB through 68 innings over 32 appearances (two starts). Junis has past experience as a starter, but this was just the second time he's gone four innings all season, so he has a better chance of picking up wins if he's the one pitching behind an opener.
