Smith went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's 4-0 win over Kansas City. Smith tagged Sam Long for a solo shot in the seventh inning, marking Smith's third home run in the last five games. During that stretch, he's 7-for-13 with six RBI. With third baseman Josh Jung (wrist) nearing a return, Smith could shift away from the hot corner and into the DH slot.... See More ... See Less

Rangers' Josh Smith: Back at third base for now
Smith started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-0 win over Kansas City. Smith made a second consecutive start in the field after serving as a designated hitter for a pair of games. He had been dealing with a hamstring injury that forced him to miss four games before returning as the DH. Now that he's back in the field, the question becomes how long he will be there. Third baseman Josh Jung (wrist) rejoined the team Friday and will take live batting practice Tuesday. If all goes well, Jung could be activated off the 60-day injured list afterward. The Rangers would like to keep Smith's bat in the lineup; he's batting .304/.393/.469 over a career-high 259 plate appearances. The lefty hitter could serve as the primary DH; he owns an .857 OPS against lefties and an .863 OPS against righties this season.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Remains at DH
Smith started at designated hitter and went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Mets. Smith returned from a hamstring injury Tuesday but has been limited to DH duties in both games, and he's still made an impact with his bat. In the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday, he doubled in a run then scored a game-tying run. Smith is 3-for-7 with a home run, a double, four RBI and an additional run scored in the two games at DH.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Makes impact in return
Smith served as the designated hitter and went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's 7-6 loss to the Mets. Smith returned to the starting lineup Tuesday after battling a hamstring issue since late last week. He was given a soft re-entry as the DH and could return to his normal duties as the fill-in third baseman for the injured Josh Jung (wrist). The surprisingly productive Smith has been a boon to the Rangers' offense which has missed Jung's bat. Smith is batting .298/.386/.451 with five homers, 16 doubles, one triple, 28 RBI and 34 runs scored over 249 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Back in lineup
Smith (hamstring) is batting third as the designated hitter Tuesday against the Mets. Smith missed four straight games with tightness in his upper hamstring but will rejoin the lineup Tuesday. While he's healthy enough to play, the Rangers are opting to ease Smith into action in a non-defensive capacity, giving him his first start at DH this season.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Remains out Sunday
Smith (undisclosed) is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners. Smith is on the bench for a third straight game due to an injury that manager Bruce Bochy has termed as "general tightness." Ezequiel Duran will get a second consecutive start at third base in place of the banged-up Smith.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Remains out Saturday
Smith (undisclosed) is not in the starting lineup Saturday versus the Mariners, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. Smith will miss a second straight game as he nurses "general tightness." Ezequiel Duran will draw the start at third base while Robbie Grossman enters the lineup at designated hitter and bats seventh against Seattle.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Sitting Friday
Smith is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners. Smith will begin Friday's series opener in the dugout after starting in the last two games, going 4-for-7. He's been one of the Rangers' hottest hitters in June, slashing .368/.429/.526 with seven runs, one home run and two RBI. Ezequiel Duran and Davis Wendzel will start at shortstop and third base, respectively, against Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Stays at shortstop
Smith started at shortstop and went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Thursday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers. Smith made another start at shortstop, as the Rangers are being careful with Corey Seager (hamstring). Seager had returned to action Wednesday, serving as the DH, and was originally in Thursday's starting lineup at DH before being scratched. Smith continued to be a surprising contributor for the Rangers; he's gone 19-for-53 (.358) with six extra-base hits, two steals, four RBI and 10 runs scored over the last 15 games.... See More ... Rangers' Josh Smith: Homers in loss
Smith went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-2 loss to the Marlins. Smith cracked his third home run of the season in the fourth inning. While he won't be a 1-for-1 replacement for the injured Josh Jung (wrist), Smith has done a credible job as the Rangers' primary third baseman. Smith is batting .279/.374/.419 with three homers, 13 doubles, one triple, 22 RBI and 26 runs over 198 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Moves up order
Smith batted third and went 1-for-3 in Friday's 3-2 loss to the Twins. Smith, who made a 10th consecutive start, batted out of the three hole for a second straight game. Earlier in the week, he batted cleanup. He's been an under-the-radar producer for the Rangers, ranking second among the team's regulars with a .782 OPS, and he has been rewarded with a promotion in the order against right-handers.... Rangers' Josh Smith: Serves as cleanup batter
Smith started at third base, batted cleanup and went 2-for-4 in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Angels. Smith filled in as the cleanup hitter after Adolis Garcia was scratched with a forearm issue. He extended a hit streak to five games (7-for-20) but has cooled off overall in May (.630 OPS) after a strong April (.927). Despite the downturn, Smith still gets plenty of opportunities with Josh Jung (wrist) unavailable.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Sitting against southpaw
Smith is out of the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Rockies. The lefty-hitting Smith went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Saturday's 8-3 loss. He will begin Sunday's contest on the bench as the Rockies send out southpaw Ty Blach. Ezequiel Duran will fill in for Smith at third base.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Sitting in early game Wednesday
Smith is out of the lineup for the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Athletics. The lefty-hitting Smith will hit the bench for the first game of the twin bill while the Athletics bring southpaw JP Sears to the hill. Davis Wendzel will fill in for Smith at third base.... Rangers' Josh Smith: Goes deep Tuesday
Smith went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and scored twice during Tuesday's 7-1 win over the Nationals. Smith's second-inning single and sixth-inning solo shot give the 26-year-old infielder his third multi-hit game in his last five contests. He is 7-for-14 two homers, three RBI and three runs scored during that stretch and now boats an impressive .917 OPS on the season while filling in as Josh Jung's (wrist) replacement.... See More ... Rangers' Josh Smith: Not in Sunday's lineup
Smith is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Reds. Smith has been surprisingly productive this season with an .852 OPS through 27 games, but he'll take a seat for Sunday's contest. Davis Wendzel will step in at the hot corner and bat seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Homers in loss
Smith started at shortstop and went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 4-3 loss to Seattle. Smith launched his first homer of the season in the fourth inning, which tied the game momentarily before the Mariners plated two a half-inning later. He got the start at shortstop while primary starter Corey Seager served as DH a day after he left a game with a bruised shin. If Seager is limited to DH for a bit, Smith will be the primary fill-in at short. If Seager is ready for a defensive role, then Smith will go back to sharing third base with Ezequiel Duran. Smith is batting .292/.393/.417 over 84 plate appearances, much better than his previous two MLB seasons.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Out against left-hander
Smith is out of the lineup for Wednesday's contest in Detroit. Southpaw Tarik Skubal will toe the rubber for the Tigers, so the left-handed-hitting Smith will take a seat. Davis Wendzel will handle third-base duties for the Rangers.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Moves back to third base
Smith started at third base and went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, an RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 10-2 win over the Astros. Smith was back at third base after filling in at shortstop Wednesday, when Corey Seager served as the designated hitter. When not giving Seager a break at short, the lefty-hitting Smith is expected to start at third base against right-handers while Josh Jung (wrist) is sidelined for the next 6-to-8 weeks. Smith has hit safely in three straight games, going 4-for-10 with a walk, two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored.... See More ... See Less -
Rangers' Josh Smith: Starts at shortstop
Smith started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Rays. Smith filled in for Corey Seager, who served as the designated hitter Wednesday. Smith is also expected to get starts at third base while Josh Jung (wrist) takes 8-to-10 weeks to recover following surgery.... See More ... See Less
