Something clicked for Will Benson during his five-week stint in the minors in April and May. A first-round pick in 2016, he made changes to cut down on his whiffs in 2022, but it wasn't enough to convince Cleveland as the Guardians traded traded him across state to Cincinnati just before spring training. While those aforementioned changes did not pay immediate dividends at the major-league level, Benson put everything together with Triple-A Louisville and would go on to be one of the Reds' best hitters over the final four months of the season. From May 30 on, Benson hit .296/.389/.542 with 34 extra-base hits -- including eight triples -- to go along with 19 steals in 22 attempts. It was a remarkable turnaround, but Benson is a strict platoon player for manager David Bell and the stickiness of his plate-skill improvements is still in question. The 25-year-old had over 300 plate appearances following his return to the majors, but that's not enough of a sample to draw any definitive conclusions.

Benson is absent from the lineup for Wednesday contest versus the Pirates. Nick Martini, Stuart Fairchild and Jake Fraley will form the Cincinnati outfield from left to right.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Returns, extends hitless streak

Benson started in left field and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to the Pirates. Benson, who was back on the field after dealing with an elbow issue, continued to slump this month. He's gone 25 at-bats without a hit, and his batting average dropped to .188 following the loss.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Back in action Tuesday

Benson (elbow) is starting in left field and batting eighth Tuesday against the Pirates. The 26-year-old sat out Monday after being hit by a pitch in the left elbow Sunday, but X-rays came back negative and he's back in the lineup Tuesday. Benson has slumped hard in June with a .442 OPS, and he's 0-for-21 over his past nine contests.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Excluded from lineup vs. lefty

Benson (elbow) is out of the lineup Monday against the Pirates. Benson will take a seat for the series opener versus the Pirates after he exited late in the Reds' 7-4 loss to the Red Sox on Sunday, when he was struck in the left elbow by a pitch. He's day-to-day after X-rays returned negative, but even if he was 100 percent, the lefty-hitting Benson likely would have been on the bench anyway with the Pirates sending southpaw Bailey Falter to the mound. Benson has recorded just four hits in 42 at-bats versus lefties this season.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Out versus southpaw

Benson is not in the lineup for Friday's contest versus the Cubs. The left-handed hitting Benson will take a seat as the Cubs send southpaw Justin Steele to the hill. Blake Dunn, TJ Friedl and Stuart Fairchild will handle outfield duties for the Reds on Friday.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Bat showing life

Benson went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, two RBI and a run scored in Thursday's 8-4 win over the Cubs. Benson provided insurance for the Reds with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was the fourth consecutive game with a hit for Benson, who is 6-for-14 with a double, a triple, five RBI and three runs scored during that stretch. The steal was his ninth of the season, but his first in 22 games. The hit streak has raised Benson's batting average to .214, the highest it's been since April 30.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Idle versus lefty

Benson is not in the Reds' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Rockies. The lefty-hitting Benson will begin Tuesday's game on the bench with the Rockies starting southpaw Ty Blach. The Reds' starting outfield will consist of Blake Dunn in left, TJ Friedl in center and Stuart Fairchild in right.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Clubs homer in loss

Benson went 1-for-1 with a walk and a solo home run Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Cardinals. Benson produced Cincinnati's lone run, taking a Kyle Gibson four-seamer over the fence to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. It was the eighth homer of the season for Benson, who also provides fantasy value with eight steals. He was eventually removed for a pinch hitter when a lefty reliever entered, which has been the case in his last four starts.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Smacks go-ahead homer

Benson went 1-for-1 with a walk and a solo home run in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Dodgers. Benson followed up Spencer Steer's homer in the first inning with one of his own off Walker Buehler in the second. While Benson is providing some category juice with seven homers and eight steals through 49 games this season, he's batting just .193/.293/.398. His struggles have led to him falling to the bottom of the order against righties, and the bit of time he was seeing against lefties earlier this season has dried up.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Goes deep in win

Benson started in center field and batted leadoff, going 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 6-2 win over Arizona. Benson delivered the go-ahead knock in the fifth inning, his first home run since April 27. With TJ Friedl (thumb) landing on the injured list, Benson is likely to shift over to center field against right-handers, while Stuart Fairchild rotates in against lefties. Benson's hit the ball hard, per Statcast, but he has little show for it (.193 batting average, .393 slugging).

  • Reds' Will Benson: Sitting against lefty

Benson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks. Benson and fellow lefty hitter Jake Fraley will head to the bench Wednesday while southpaw Jordan Montgomery toes the slab for Arizona. Stuart Fairchild and Luke Maile will join the lineup as the starters in right field and designated hitter, respectively, while Benson and Fraley sit.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Delivers against lefty

Benson went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's 7-4 win over Philadelphia. Benson put the Reds on the board with a solo home run in the third inning off righty Spencer Turnbull, but his biggest hit came three innings later. The lefty hitter delivered the go-ahead run with two outs off lefty Matt Strahm. Benson was a platoon player in 2023 but is getting more opportunities against southpaws this season. It's not always pretty -- 4-for-22 off them thus far -- but manager David Bell let him stay in the game at a high-leverage moment. Benson, who snapped a career-worst 0-for-18 skid in Tuesday's win over the Phillies, is 3-for-9 in the series heading into the finale Thursday afternoon.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Exits starting nine

Benson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. With left-hander Ranger Suarez on the mound for the Phillies, Reds manager David Bell will give the lefty-hitting Benson a day off and stock up on some extra right-handed bats. Bubba Thompson will pick up a start in the outfield in Benson's stead.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Sitting versus southpaw

Benson is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Angels. With the Angels sending left-hander Patrick Sandoval to the mound Saturday, Bubba Thompson will start in right field and bat ninth. Benson has started in each of the Reds' last five games, going 3-for-17 with five walks and three stolen bases over that span.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Heads to bench Sunday

Benson is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. Benson started the first eight games of the season but will take a seat Sunday while mired in a 2-for-19 slump. Bubba Thompson will start in center field and bat ninth in the series finale versus New York.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Swipes bag in win

Benson started in right field and went 0-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Monday's 6-3 extra-inning win over the Phillies. Benson stole his first base of the season after logging 19 thefts in 2023. Monday's start was notable in that the lefty-hitting Benson has been in the lineup for both games when the Reds have faced a southpaw. He batted .146 with a .400 OPS over 44 plate appearances against left-handers in 2023, but it appears the Reds are trying to make him an everyday player in 2024. Other than Monday's walk, Benson struck out three times and is 1-for-4 against left-handers thus far. He's fanned seven times overall in 17 plate appearances.

  • Reds' Will Benson: In lineup versus left-hander

Benson will start in right field and bat ninth in Monday's game versus the Phillies. The Reds have faced two lefties in the early going and Benson has been the only left-handed batter in the lineup for both of those games. He's been down in the No. 9 spot for both of those tilts, but it's a positive sign that Cincinnati is viewing him as an everyday player, at least while the club contends with some injuries.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Belts game-tying homer

Benson went 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBI in Sunday's victory over the Nationals. Benson took Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan deep in the ninth inning with a two-run homer to tie the game. He also notched his third double of the season earlier in the game. Benson has started hot out of the gate for the Reds, garnering three straight starts and going 5-for-12 with four extra-base hits. He should maintain a regular lineup spot so long as TJ Friedl (wrist) is out.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Starts in center field

Benson started in center field and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Saturday's spring game against Colorado. Benson's served as the starting center fielder in four of his last six Cactus League outings. The lefty swinger and right-handed batting Stuart Fairchild have rotated there since TJ Friedl sustained a broken wrist. Those two are expected to share center field while Friedl recovers, but it's uncertain if it will be a strict platoon.

  • Reds' Will Benson: Could see more center field action

With TJ Friedl out with a fractured wrist, Benson could get more starts in center field, along with Stuart Fairchild, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Benson and teammate Jake Fraley both should get more playing time not only because of Friedl's injury, but also because of Noelvi Marte's suspension, which presumably frees the DH spot up for either one of them or Jonathan India. Friedl will be sidelined for a minimum of 3-to-4 weeks, after which his wrist will be re-evaluated.
