Player Outlook
Nick Senzel will begin a new chapter in 2024 after signing a one-year, $2 million contract with Washington in December. His time in Cincinnati was tumultuous, with multiple ill-fated positional changes and injuries dooming the 2016 second overall pick's tenure in the Reds organization. He missed the start of last season with a toe injury and later spent time on the IL with knee irritation. There was talk of Senzel being traded at the deadline, but the Reds held him only to send the 28-year-old to the minors for a stretch in August. Senzel has flashed potential sporadically in his five seasons at the major-league level -- his 13 homers last season were a career high, but even so he has not cleared a .700 OPS since his rookie season in 2019. The Nationals are nonetheless betting on untapped potential and project to open the season with Senzel as their starting third baseman. It's anyone's guess how long it will last. For many, Senzel has not shown enough during his time on the field to warrant the health risk. Helping his case is dual eligibility entering the 2024 season (third base, outfield).

Senzel went 1-for-5 with a two-run home run in Monday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Padres. After starting June hot, Senzel has gone a mere 4-for-32 over his last 10 contests. The 28-year-old is slashing .218/.324/.385 with seven homers, 18 RBI, 22 runs scored and one stolen base over 207 plate appearances this season.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Getting breather Thursday

Senzel is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Tigers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Senzel started each of the Nationals' last six contests, so he looks to be getting some maintenance as Washington and Detroit wrap up their series with a day game after a night game. Ildemaro Vargas will fill in at third base for Senzel, who has gotten off to a nice start to June with a .265/.375/.471 slash line through his first 10 games of the month.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Homer, three hits in win

Senzel went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run, three total RBI and an additional run scored in Saturday's 7-3 win over Atlanta. Senzel extended the Nationals' lead to 4-0 with an RBI double in the fourth inning, his second two-bagger of the day, before blasting a two-run homer off Dylan Lee in the sixth. It's the first three-hit game of the year for Senzel, who'd gone 0-for-10 in his previous three contests. The 28-year-old Senzel is now slashing .243/.352/.441 with six homers, 16 RBI and 18 runs scored across 43 games while holding down the regular third-base job in Washington.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: In Thursday's lineup

Senzel (knee) will start at third base and bat sixth in Thursday's game against Atlanta. Senzel eventually had to depart Wednesday's contest versus Atlanta after fouling a ball off his right knee in the second inning, but he's back in there the following day. The 28-year-old has experienced a power outage in May, going homerless in 22 games after he hit five in just 12 contests during April.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Suffers knee injury

Senzel was removed from Wednesday's win over Atlanta after fouling a ball off his right knee in the second inning, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. The 28-year-old initially remained in the game to finish off his at-bat, drawing a walk before Ildemaro Vargas entered as a pinch runner. All imaging done on Senzel's knee came back negative after the game, per Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com, and the Nationals are hoping the 28-year-old will be able to return to the field for Thursday's series finale. However, if he isn't able to play Thursday, Vargas would likely step in as Washington's starting third baseman.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Sitting against another righty

Senzel is out of Saturday's lineup against the Red Sox. He will sit for a second day in a row with the Nationals facing a right-handed starting pitcher, and on both occasions Victor Robles has picked up the start in the outfield with Jesse Winker sliding to designated hitter. Senzel is hitting .214 with a 42.4 percent strikeout rate in 28 at-bats this month.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Not in Friday's lineup

Senzel is not in the lineup for Friday's game in Boston. Senzel closed out April with a power surge, but the strikeouts have piled up on him in May, as he's whiffed at a 42.4 percent rate in seven contests. He'll get a day off to regroup. Jesse Winker will be the Nationals' designated hitter Friday, while Eddie Rosario will hold down left field.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Launches two more dingers

Senzel went 2-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI during Sunday's 12-9 win over the Marlins. Senzel's two home runs came in consecutive innings, with the two-run homer in the fourth cutting the lead to two, then the three-run blast in the fifth giving the Nationals a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The third baseman got off to a late start with the Nationals after fracturing his thumb prior to Opening Day but has found his groove over the last six games, as each of his five hits during that stretch have cleared the outfield fence. The power is legit for Senzel, who was never quite able to put things together during his five seasons in Cincinnati but has been thriving in his first season with Washington.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Returns to lineup Saturday

Senzel (illness) will serve as the Nationals' designated hitter Saturday against the Marlins. A stomach illness has kept Senzel from playing in Washington's last two games, but the issue appears to have subsided prior to Saturday's contest. The 28-year-old is slashing .200/.259/.440 with two homers across 27 plate appearances this season.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Scratched Thursday

Senzel was scratched from Washington's lineup ahead of Thursday's game versus the Dodgers due to a stomach illness. Ildemaro Vargas will cover third base instead and bat eighth while Senzel is under the weather. The 28-year-old has hit safely in three of his last four games, homering twice.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Goes yard in Wednesday's loss

Senzel went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 11-2 loss to the Dodgers. The 28-year-old third baseman produced the Nationals' first run of the night in the second inning by launching a Landon Knack fastball over the fence in left-center field. Senzel has two homers on the season with both coming in the last three games, but he's gone just 5-for-25 with a 2:9 BB:K since returning from the thumb injury he suffered Opening Day. His spot in the starting lineup seems fairly secure unless Brady House forces an early promotion, but Senzel's fantasy upside remains limited.

  • Nationals' Nick Senzel: Blasts first homer

Senzel went 1-for-4 with a solo home run during Sunday's 6-0 win over the Astros. Senzel's first homer as a National came in the sixth inning off Astros' reliever Tayler Scott. The third baseman had struck out in his first two at-bats Sunday and had accumulated just three singles in 17 at-bats following his return from a fractured thumb prior to depositing the 2-2 pitch over the left-center field wall. Senzel is coming off a season in which he hit .236 with a career-high 13 home runs in 301 at-bats for Cincinnati.

He played three games with Double-A Harrisburg as part of his rehab assignment and went 4-for-7 with one double, one RBI and three walks. Senzel is starting at third base and batting sixth for Monday's game against the Dodgers, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.

Senzel broke his thumb while fielding grounders ahead of Thursday's season opener, and he is expected to be out 3-to-4 weeks as a result. Ildemaro Vargas started in Senzel's place at third base Thursday, though most of the reps at the hot corner could end up going to Trey Lipscomb, who was selected from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move.

Senzel broke his thumb while fielding a groundball before Thursday's game against the Reds, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
