Player Outlook
Paul Sewald finally got the opportunity to be a primary closer in 2023 thanks to his consistent performance in high leverage over the past few seasons. He racked up a career-high 34 saves -- 21 with Seattle, plus another 13 after his trade to Arizona -- good for seventh in the majors. His team save share with both the Mariners and D'Backs was above 80%, which combined would have ranked fourth overall among closers. Combine this with perennially solid ratios and strikeout rate near 30% and Sewald is right on the brink of being a top-10 closer. Realistically, he'll settle in the 11-15 range among closers for 2024 drafts, but there's comfort in knowing what to expect from Sewald. The 33-year-old gave up more contact last season, but his hard-hit rate and average exit velocity were both in the 94th percentile or better. Sewald shouldn't have much competition for saves for the defending National League champions as along as he puts his World Series struggles behind him.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Not available Wednesday

Sewald wasn't available to pitch Wednesday, when Joe Mantiply picked up the save in a 4-3 win over the Reds, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. Sewald did not enter Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Reds. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo used Kevin Ginkel to close out what was a 4-2 lead to begin the bottom of the ninth inning, but he ran into trouble, allowing a walk and two singles. Lovullo turned to Joe Mantiply to close out the game. Presumably, the manager didn't want to push Sewald so soon after missing a month-and-a-half with an oblique injury; he threw 15 pitches Tuesday in his first game off the injured list.

Following the encouraging news, Sewald plans to travel with the team to Cincinnati, where he could be activated for Tuesday's series opener against the Reds. He opened the season on the injured list and paused rehab is rehab after an appearance April 23. He downplayed the pause and was reticent to call it a setback; instead, Sewald chalked it up to panic and wanted a re-imaging to ease his mind. The reliever had never been on the injured list during his MLB career and didn't know what to expect.

  • Diamondbacks' Paul Sewald: Activation coming soon

Manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday that Sewald (oblique) is meeting with the Diamondbacks medical team to determine whether he needs another rehab appearance or if he's ready to return from the 15-day injured list, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports. Sewald allowed one unearned run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in his first rehab outing at Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. That outing might be the only rehab appearance that Sewald needs, as Lovullo noted that the right-hander is "getting extremely close" to a return to the Arizona bullpen. Sewald has been out all season with a strained left oblique, but he should take over as the team's closer once he's activated.
