J.D. Davis finished strong with the Giants down the stretch of the 2022 campaign after coming over in a trade with the Mets and he carried that over into 2023, slashing .282/.362/.456 with 10 home runs and 44 RBI over 76 games through the end of June. The 30-year-old cooled off the rest of the way, though, hitting just .211/.284/.364 before ending the season with a shoulder strain. Davis still hits the ball hard (91.1 mph average exit velocity) and he did a better job of making contact in 2023 in cutting his strikeout rate to a more respectable 27.8 percent. His defense was actually much improved last season, although Davis' track record suggests he'll have to hit if he wants to play. He netted a career-high 546 plate appearances in 2023 but is no safe bet to reach that number in 2024.

  • Yankees' J.D. Davis: Expected to platoon at first base

Davis is expected to be used in a platoon at first base with the Yankees, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. Davis was traded to New York on Sunday after being designated for assignment by the Athletics earlier in the week. Manager Aaron Boone said that Davis will be used in a timeshare at first base with Ben Rice while Anthony Rizzo (arm) is unavailable, entering the lineup when the Yankees face left-handers. The 31-year-old has produced a .265 average with a .795 OPS over 37 plate appearances against southpaws this season.

  • Yankees' J.D. Davis: Acquired by Yankees

The Yankees acquired Davis and cash considerations from the Athletics on Sunday in exchange for infielder Jordan Groshans. After seeing his playing time steadily decrease, Davis was DFA'd by the Athletics on Monday. The Yankees will make room on the 40-man roster for Davis, marking the third organization he's been with since the start of spring training after the Athletics previously signed him following his release from the Giants in March. He appeared in 39 games for the Athletics before losing his roster spot, slashing .236/.304/.366 with four home runs and five RBI over 135 plate appearances. To make room for Davis on the 40-man roster, the Yankees transferred right-hander Nick Burdi (hip) to the 60-day injured list.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Designated for assignment

Davis was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Davis will now be available to be claimed off waivers and if he has no takers, Oakland is expected to release the 31-year-old. After being released by the Giants in March, Davis compiled a .236 average with four home runs, five RBI and 12 runs scored over 123 at-bats in 39 games with the Athletics this season.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: On base three times in loss

Davis went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run during a loss to the Twins in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday. Davis drew an increasingly rare start at third base and delivered his first multi-hit effort since May 24. The veteran has been displaced from the starting nine more often than not since late May, logging a total of just 17 plate appearances across six games since the calendar flipped to June. Davis is capable of playing both corner infield spots in addition to serving as the designated hitter, but younger assets Tyler Soderstrom, Abraham Toro and Brent Rooker are currently the preferred options at those respective positions.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Continuing to sit

Davis is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Toronto. Saturday marks Davis' third consecutive absence. The lefty-hitting Tyler Soderstrom will once again start at first base Saturday while batting seventh against Blue Jays right-hander Kevin Gausman.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Sitting again Friday

Davis is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Toronto. The righty-hitting Davis will sit for a second straight game as the Blue Jays send right-hander Chris Bassitt to the mound Friday. Over his last 15 games, Davis has slashed .250/.298/.386 with two home runs and three RBI over 44 at-bats. Tyler Soderstrom will start at first base and bat seventh in the series opener.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Back to bench Thursday

Davis is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mariners. Davis had started at first base in both of the Athletics' previous two matchups with right-handed pitchers, going 2-for-7 with a pair of singles. Though the Mariners are bringing another righty (Bryan Woo) to the hill for Thursday's series finale, Davis will cede his spot in the lineup to Tyler Soderstrom. The Athletics could elect to rotate Davis, Soderstrom and Aledmys Diaz at first base until one of the three begins performing well enough to take control of an everyday role.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Remains on bench

Davis is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's matchup with Atlanta. Davis will remain on the bench for the fourth consecutive contest Saturday. He appears to have fallen out of favor as the primary option at first base with Oakland. Aledmys Diaz will draw the start first and bat eighth against Atlanta.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Sitting again

Davis is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Atlanta. Davis will miss a third consecutive game Friday -- each of which has come against right-handed pitching. Considering the 31-year-old has been significantly better against southpaws, he could slip into the short side of a platoon. Tyler Soderstrom will fill in at the cold corner and bat eighth.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Not in Thursday's lineup

Davis is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in Tampa Bay. Davis is on the bench for a second straight day. The Rays are using a right-handed opener in Shawn Armstrong, so it's possible Davis enters mid-game if Tampa Bay eventually turns to a lefty. Davis has a .776 OPS against southpaws this season versus just a .581 OPS versus righties. Aledmys Diaz will start at first base Thursday.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Getting Wednesday off

Davis is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rays. Davis will hit the bench after he went 1-for-6 at the dish while starting in both of the past two games. Tyler Soderstrom will step in for Davis at first base.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Getting breather Saturday

Davis is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Astros. He will begin Saturday's game on the bench after four consecutive starts. Davis recorded a hit in each of those four games, going 7-for-16 with two home runs and three RBI over that span. Brent Rooker will serve as the designated hitter Saturday while Tyler Soderstrom starts at first base against right-hander Spencer Arrighetti.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Racks up three hits in loss

Davis went 3-for-4 in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Astros. Davis has gone 7-for-16 with three RBI over his last four games, though that followed a rough 1-for-17 stretch over seven contests. The 31-year-old is slashing .229/.270/.381 with four home runs, five RBI and 11 runs scored over 31 games this season. Davis should continue to see steady playing time versus southpaws, but the Athletics' outfield has gotten even more crowded by the activation of Miguel Andujar (knee) and the promotion of Daz Cameron, and that could spill over into the designated hitter spot.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Pops another homer Thursday

Davis went 2-for-6 with a two-run home run in an extra-innings win over the Rockies on Thursday. Davis gave the Athletics a serious boost in the eighth inning when he left the yard with Seth Brown aboard and Oakland down by three. Half of Davis' four homers on the season have come in the last three games, and with hits in each of those contests, he's pushed his OPS (.618) to its highest point since May 8.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Leaves yard Tuesday

Davis went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Rockies. Davis got the Athletics on the board with a solo blast off Cal Quantrill in the third inning. It was his first home run since he had two against the Guardians on March 29 and just his second hit in his last 20 plate appearances since May 11. The 31-year-old has lost out on playing time due to his offensive struggles. He's now slashing .196/.237/.337 with seven extra-base hits, three RBI, 10 runs and a 4:25 BB:K in 97 plate appearances.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Losing work to Soderstrom

Davis remains out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Astros. Davis has now started just once in the Athletics' last five games, as he's seemingly moved into the short side of a platoon with the lefty-hitting Tyler Soderstrom, who has recently taken over as the team's primary first baseman. The 31-year-old has supplied a career-worst .586 OPS over 83 plate appearances this season, and the non-contending Athletics don't have much incentive to give him regular playing time while he's struggling to produce.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Gets breather Friday

Davis isn't in the Athletics' lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners. Davis went 2-for-6 and scored three times during Wednesday's doubleheader against Texas, and he will get an extended rest period as the A's begin their series with Seattle. Tyler Soderstrom will fill the void at first base and bat sixth.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Sitting for nightcap

Davis isn't in Oakland's lineup for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rangers. Davis went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice during a 9-4 victory in Game 1, and he'll catch a breather to conclude Wednesday's activities. Tyler Soderstrom will start at first base instead while batting eighth.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Exiting starting nine Sunday

Davis is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. Following a stint on the 10-day injured list due to an adductor strain, Davis was activated Friday and had started at first base in both of his first two games back in action, going 2-for-7 with a run scored between those contests. The Athletics haven't indicated that Davis suffered a setback in his recovery from the injury, so his absence Sunday is presumably a pre-planned maintenance day.

  • Athletics' J.D. Davis: Returns from IL

The Athletics reinstated Davis (thigh) from the 10-day injured list Friday. The 31-year-old went 3-for-15 during a four-game rehab sitnt with Triple-A Las Vegas and is back in the lineup Friday for Oakland, as he's starting at first base and batting fifth. Davis posted a .196/.255/.373 slash line in 14 games prior to suffering the adductor strain.
