  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Tagged with loss in return

Weaver (1-2) took the loss against the Orioles on Friday, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one batter in two-thirds of an inning. Weaver was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of Friday's game. He was brought in for the eighth inning with the game tied at 3-3, but things quickly got out of hand as he gave up a solo home run to Ramon Urias before being tagged for another run later in the frame. It was a less-than-ideal return for Weaver, given that he was deployed in a high-leverage situation and is expected to split closing duties with Devin Williams.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Set to split closing duties

Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Weaver (hamstring), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list earlier in the day, and Devin Williams will both see save chances, Max Goodman of NJ.com reports. Weaver was serving as the Yankees' closer when he landed on the injured list in early June, but Williams is in strong form with a 1.72 ERA, 0.77 WHIP and 23:2 K:BB across his past 15.2 innings. Weaver has been consistently dominant this year with just three earned runs allowed in 24 appearances, and he still has a fair amount of fantasy value while splitting save chances for the Yankees, though it remains unclear exactly how even the split will be.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Moved off IL

The Yankees reinstated Weaver (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list Friday. Weaver officially beats his initial 4-to-6 week timeline for return by over a week, returning to the active roster just 17 days after being placed on the IL for a strained hamstring. The 31-year-old had served as New York's primary closer before sustaining the injury, but Devin Williams has gone 4-for-4 on save chances while Weaver's been idle, leaving some room for competition. It's worth noting Weaver has been the more reliable option throughout the campaign, boasting a 1.05 ERA compared to Williams' 5.27 ERA.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Could return from IL on Friday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Weaver (hamstring) could be activated from the 15-day injured list prior to Friday's game versus the Orioles, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Weaver bounced back well from a live batting practice session Tuesday and appears in line to return to action this weekend after missing less than three weeks with a strained left hamstring. The right-hander was originally projected to miss 4-to-6 weeks due to the injury, so he's seemingly recovered more quickly than anticipated. Weaver had been serving as the Yankees' closer when he got hurt, but he could return in a setup role with Devin Williams pitching well of late in the ninth inning.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Might be activated soon

Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Tuesday that Weaver (hamstring) could skip a rehab assignment and rejoin the active roster later this week, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Weaver faced hitters Tuesday in a live batting practice session for the first time since straining his left hamstring, with Boone describing the session as "excellent." As long as Weaver recovers well, it sounds like he could be activated from the 15-day injured list later this week. It would be a rapid recovery, as he is just over two weeks into a projected 4-to-6 week timetable. Weaver was serving as the Yankees' closer when he went on the IL, but it's not clear whether he will get that job back upon his return or pitch in a setup role in front of Devin Williams, who boasts a 1.84 ERA and 20:2 K:BB over his last 14.2 innings.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Completes live batting practice

Weaver (hamstring) threw a 20-pitch live batting practice session Tuesday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. It's the first time Weaver has faced hitters since he landed on the 15-day injured list two weeks ago. The Yankees offered a 4-to-6 week timetable for Weaver when the IL move was made, but the reliever noted Tuesday that he hasn't felt anything in the hamstring since a day or two after he was hurt, so perhaps he can beat that timeline. The ultimate decision will be the club's.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Completes bullpen session

Weaver (hamstring) threw a bullpen session Wednesday and said afterward that he felt "great," Erik Boland of Newsday reports. The right-hander received a platelet-rich-plasma injection for the hamstring strain shortly after landing on the injured list June 3, and Wednesday marked the second bullpen session of his rehab program. Weaver was given an initial recovery timeline of 4-to-6 weeks, and a return at the start of that window seems plausible given his current trajectory.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: IL move made official

The Yankees placed Weaver on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a left hamstring strain. Weaver suffered the injury while warming up during Sunday's game against the Dodgers and is expected to be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks. Devin Williams will slide back into the closer role for the Yankees while Weaver is shelved.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Expected to land on injured list

Weaver (hamstring) is expected to be placed on the 15-day injured list and could miss the next 4-to-6 weeks, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Weaver tweaked his hamstring while warming up in the bullpen Sunday's win over the Dodgers, and the injury appears to be more significant than initially thought after the Yankees received his MRI results. The team plans to disclose an official timetable for the closer's return Tuesday, per Passan. Weaver's absence will presumably pave the way for Devin Williams to take back full-time closing duties for the Yankees. Williams picked up his last save May 27 against the Angels, despite surrendering two runs on three hits.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Tweaks hamstring Sunday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Weaver wasn't available out of the bullpen in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Dodgers after experiencing hamstring discomfort while warming up, Erik Boland of Newsday reports. Weaver was gearing up for a save chance with the Yankees entering the top of the ninth inning up 6-3, but he ultimately never entered the contest after New York expanded its lead to 7-3 before the bottom of the frame. The Yankees went with Tim Hill in the bottom of the ninth to finish out the game. Boone noted that Weaver "felt something" while stretching in the bullpen, prompting the Yankees to err on the side of caution and stay away from him. At this time, the Yankees haven't indicated that Weaver is at risk of landing on the injured list, but he could be subject to further testing before the team provides an update on his status. If Weaver is forced to miss out on any save chances moving forward, former closer Devin Williams would likely be the top candidate to assume the ninth-inning role.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Escapes with save

Weaver picked up the save in Sunday's 5-4 win over Colorado, allowing one run on three hits with no strikeouts over one inning. The Yankees had a two-run lead entering the bottom of the ninth, but Weaver nearly didn't make it out of the frame with the save. He allowed a solo homer to Mickey Moniak to begin the inning and had runners on first and second with one out before retiring Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman to end the game. Weaver hadn't allowed an earned run in his previous eight appearances, and he's now converted seven of his eight save chances.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Snags seventh save

Weaver struck out one batter and didn't allow a baserunner in the ninth inning to pick up the save Thursday during a 1-0 victory over the Rangers. Weaver has been lights out through his first 21 appearances this season, surrendering just one run across 22.2 innings. That continued Thursday as the 31-year-old needed only 10 pitches to notch his seventh save of the season in eight tries. Weaver worked in all three games of the series versus Texas, which could make him unavailable for the first game of the Rockies series Friday.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Collects one-out save

Weaver earned the save in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Rangers after recording the final out of the ninth inning. The Yankees entered the ninth inning up 5-0, but Weaver was brought in to close things out after Ian Hamilton gave up a two-run home run to Jonah Heim. Weaver was able to make quick work of Josh Smith, needing just two pitches to record the final out and earn the save. It's the second outing in a row in which Weaver has tallied a one-out save, and he is up to six saves on the season with a 0.44 ERA, 0.58 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB across 20.2 innings.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Tosses two pitches for fifth save

Weaver came away with the save in Friday's 6-2 win over the Mets, retiring the only batter he faced in the ninth inning. Weaver was brought in during the ninth inning after Yerry De Los Santos yielded an RBI double to Francisco Lindor. With runners on second and third, Weaver needed only two pitches to finish things off by getting Juan Soto to fly out to center field. It was Weaver's fifth save of the campaign, and he has a 0.44 ERA, 0.59 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB across 20.1 innings this season.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Secures fourth save

Weaver struck out three in a perfect inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Mariners. Weaver has bounced back from his blown save May 5 versus the Padres with 4.2 scoreless innings over his last three appearances. This was his first save in that span, as the Yankees hadn't produced a save situation in over a week. The right-hander continues to post elite numbers with a 0.45 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB across 20 innings while adding four saves and six holds this season. Weaver is capable of working multiple innings, so he may not get every save chance, but he's answered the call nearly every time he's taken the mound this season.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Tagged with loss, blown save Monday

Weaver (0-1) took the loss and blew a save opportunity against San Diego on Monday, allowing one run on two hits and a walk over one-third of an inning. New York led 4-0 heading into the eighth inning, and manager Aaron Boone called upon demoted former closer Devin Williams to maintain the lead. Williams struggled, getting two strikeouts but allowing the Padres to load the bases. Weaver was then summoned to try to escape the jam but couldn't do so -- the first two batters he faced each got a hit, pushing four runs across the plate, though three of those were charged to Williams. Weaver then walked a batter before finally getting the out he needed to end the frame, but his poor outing allowed San Diego to take the lead and resulted in his first blown save of the campaign. The run charged to Weaver was also the first he has allowed this season, and given his overall excellence and Williams' continued struggles, it's likely Weaver will continue to work as the Yankees' closer, at least in the short term.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Breezes to third save

Weaver earned the save against the Rays on Friday, striking out two batters in a perfect ninth inning. Weaver came in for the ninth inning to preserve a three-run lead, and he did so with ease. He needed only 11 pitches (nine strikes) to close things out and finished the frame with back-to-back punchouts. Weaver has yet to yield a run over his 13 outings this season and has a 16:5 K:BB across 15 innings. He's taken over as the Yankees' go-to closer due to Devin Williams' poor start the season.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Taking over closer role

Manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Weaver will "get a lot" of the Yankees' save chances moving forward due to Devin Williams being removed from the closer role, Max Goodman of NJ.com reports. Williams' disastrous start to the campaign culminated in him allowing three runs Friday for his first blown save of the season, bringing his ERA to 11.25 and prompting the Yankees to make a change. Weaver was dominant in the closer role late last year and will now reclaim the job, at least until Williams is back on track. Weaver has carried that dominance into 2025 with a 0.62 ERA and 13:5 K:BB across 13 scoreless innings.
... See More ... See Less
  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Notches second save

Weaver earned a save against Tampa Bay on Friday, striking out two batters in a perfect inning of work. It was a bit curious that manager Aaron Boone went to Weaver and not Devin Williams with the Yankees holding a one-run lead in the ninth inning, though Williams had worked the day before and on three of the previous four days. Weaver proved more than capable of nailing things down, as he threw 12 of 15 pitches for strikes en route to a clean frame and his second save of the year. After some struggles early this season, Williams has rebounded to toss four consecutive scoreless outings, so he remains the Yankees' clear top closer. However, Weaver has shined so far this season with 10 scoreless frames and an 11:5 K:BB over eight outings, and he's clearly the top option for ninth-inning opportunities when Williams is unavailable.

  • Yankees' Luke Weaver: Club option picked up

The Yankees exercised Weaver's $2.5 million club option for 2025 on Friday. In his first full season with the Yankees, Weaver turned in a 2.89 ERA and 0.93 WHIP across 84 innings -- a stark contrast from the 5.85 ERA and 1.51 WHIP he had accumulated over the previous four years. The Yankees will gladly keep him around for relatively cheap, and there's a chance he begins 2025 as New York's closer after moving into the role toward the end of the season.
