Player Outlook
Amed Rosario was a solid, albeit underwhelming fantasy option at shortstop from 2021-22, compiling his way to decent five-category production. His Statcast data in 2023, at least offensively, said he was basically the same player, but Rosario's already-modest power numbers sank and he continued to look rather helpless against right-handed pitching (.636 OPS). Also, his defense at shortstop went from bad to borderline unplayable and the Guardians wound up trading him to the Dodgers at the deadline. Rosario was used primarily at second base in Los Angeles, but playing time was sporadic. With major questions about his position and viability versus right-handers, Rosario's future is cloudy, though his landing spot with the Rays offers some hope for a turnaround.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Absent from lineup

Rosario (face) is out of the lineup for Monday's game versus the Mariners. The Mariners are starting right-hander Bryan Woo, so Rosario might not have been in the lineup regardless, but he's now on the bench for a second straight day after being struck on the face by a pitch in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates. He's considered day-to-day, but it's not clear whether Rosario will be available Monday.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Suffers cuts to face Saturday

Rosario suffered facial lacerations stemming from being hit by a pitch during Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates, but the Rays are optimistic that he avoided any fractures, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. Rosario was removed in the first inning after being struck in the face by Jared Jones' 99 mile-per-hour fastball. Fortunately for Rosario, initial X-rays to his face haven't shown any structural damage, but the Rays may look to stay away from using him for a few days while he waits for his cuts to heal.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Lifted after HBP

Rosario was in the face by a pitch during the first inning of Saturday's game against the Pirates and was removed from the contest, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. • Rays' Amed Rosario: Stuck in small-side platoon

Rosario went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI on Friday against Atlanta. With both Brandon Lowe and Taylor Walls back healthy, Rosario has found his playing time coming almost exclusively against lefties. He's hit well in the role, maintaining a .393 average with three RBI and four runs scored across his last 10 games, but he's started only one of the Rays' last six matchups against righties.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Inconsistent playing time

Rosario went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter in Saturday's game against the Orioles. Rosario entered the game in the ninth inning after hitting the bench for the second time in the last four games. Since Jonathan Aranda and Brandon Lowe have returned from the injured list, Rosario has been in the lineup only seven times across 15 contests.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Heading to bench Sunday

Rosario is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Toronto. Rosario started the first two games of the series but will take a seat Sunday after going 3-for-9 with two RBI and three strikeouts. Richie Palacios will man the keystone in the series finale.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Retreating to bench

Rosario is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox. Rosario will head to the bench after he had started in each of the previous four games while seeing time at three different spots in the infield (second base, third base and shortstop). Though the right-handed-hitting Rosario should remain a mainstay in the lineup versus lefties, his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching could be more limited moving forward after the Rays activated the lefty-hitting Jonathan Aranda from the injured list Tuesday.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Doubles, triples, drives in three

Rosario went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, three RBI and a run scored during Monday's win over the Red Sox. Rosario's two-out, two-run triple in the first put the Rays on the board while his run-scoring double in the eighth provided the Rays with their final margin of victory. Rosario has found a regular role as the top utility man for Tampa, batting .296 with a .312 on-base percentage, six doubles, three triples, two homers, 18 RBI, 12 runs and five stolen bases over 138 plate appearances.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Not starting against Yankees

Rosario is out of the starting lineup for Friday's matchup against the Yankees, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The 28-year-old infielder has been seeing regular action at second base recently as the Rays remain without Brandon Lowe (oblique), but Rosario will begin the game in the dugout Friday. He currently sports a .301 batting average with two homers, five steals, 11 runs and 15 RBI. Richie Palacios will get the start at second base Friday and bat seventh in the lineup.

Rosario went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored Friday against the Mets. Rosario hit three singles to record his first multi-hit game since April 22. He's hit only .222 in that span, though he's still struck out at just a 15.8 percent clip and has started nine of the last 10 games. Rosario also has an excellent .309 average on the season with two home runs and three stolen bases across 113 plate appearances.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Gets day off

Rosario is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Brewers. Rosario is on the bench for the first time since April 13, breaking a stretch of 14 consecutive starts during which he slashed .351/.373/.509 with two home runs, two stolen bases, nine RBI and seven runs. He's seen action mostly in right field and second base during that time and should continue to maintain a near-everyday role so long as he remains productive at the dish.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Goes yard again

Rosario went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Angels. • Rays' Amed Rosario: Snaps hitless streak

Rosario went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored Friday against the Rockies. Rosario has gotten inconsistent playing time early this season, though he's been in the lineup in five of the Rays' last six games. He entered the game with only two hits across his last 17 at-bats, but positively, he didn't strike out in that span. Rosario managed to snap out of his brief slump, tallying a double in the first inning followed by a pair of singles.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Retreats to bench Wednesday

Rosario is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Rosario will hit the bench after he started each of the last four games -- three in right field, one at shortstop -- while going 2-for-15 with a double, a walk and an RBI. The righty-hitting Rosario should be a mainstay in the lineup versus left-handed pitching, but he'll occasionally mix into the starting nine against righties, too. Two of his four starts to date have come versus right-handed pitching.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Splitting time in right field

Rosario went 0-for-3 with a walk Sunday against the Blue Jays. Rosario wasn't in the starting lineup for the Rays' first two games but has since made consecutive starts in right field -- one of which came against a lefty. He's gone a combined 2-for-7 with a walk in that span, also collecting a double and an RBI. So long as Josh Lowe (oblique) and Jonny DeLuca (hand) are sidelined, Rosario should be locked into a short-side platoon role while also picking up occasional starts against righties.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Eyed for four positions

Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said Tuesday that the plan is to play Rosario some at both middle infield positions as well as the corner outfield spots, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Neander also mentioned Rosario's ability to hit left-handed pitching, and there's a good chance much of the 28-year-old's playing time ultimately comes against southpaws. Jose Caballero is still expected to open the season as Tampa Bay's primary shortstop.

  • Rays' Amed Rosario: Lands with Rays on one-year deal

Rosario signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Rays on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. It's a good fit for Rosario, who, with a career .298/.339/.467 batting line against left-handed pitching, should see plenty of action in the middle infield spots versus southpaws. The 28-year-old has slashed only .263/.296/.374 in his career against right-handers and is a poor defender, so Tampa Bay figures to use him sparingly versus same-handed pitchers.
