Mike Clevinger was a legitimate upper-tier fantasy starter between 2018-20, registering a combined 2.91 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 416 strikeouts in 367.2 innings (61 starts) between Cleveland and San Diego. Then came a run of injuries, including Tommy John elbow surgery, and now he's only a semi-attractive streaming consideration in standard mixed leagues as he enters his age-33 campaign. Clevinger was posting strikeout percentages in the 27-33 range at his peak, but that number finished at 18.8 percent in 2022 and 20.0 percent in 2023. His fastball did come back to life a bit last year in Chicago and he put up a respectable 3.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 24 outings, but the right-hander struggles with durability, doesn't miss enough bats and is too prone to blowups at this point in his career.

    Clevinger's (elbow) next rehab start has been pushed back to next week due to neck stiffness, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. Clevinger last pitched with Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday, when he allowed five runs and threw 71 pitches over 4.2 innings. The White Sox are hopeful that he will need just one more rehab start before rejoining their rotation, although that will be dependent on how he looks and feels. Clevinger is targeting 70-to-80 pitches in next week's rehab start.

Making his second rehab start with Charlotte, Clevinger spotted 48 of his 71 pitches for strikes and faced off against 22 hitters. While Clevinger was knocked around a bit by Gwinnett and allowed three extra-base hits, at least from a workload standpoint, he looks ready to return from the 15-day injured list. Clevinger went 1-2-3 through Baltimore's lineup over the first two innings before he began to unravel in the third, surrendering two hits and two walks in the frame. Things only got worse in the fourth when the right-hander gave up a leadoff homer to Anthony Santander, followed by a three-run shot by Jorge Mateo.     I didn't include Clevinger in my 15 Pickups for Championship Week, but maybe I should have given how he performed Wednesday against the Royals, striking out seven while allowing just two earned runs in six innings. The deeper you dig, the more impressive it looks. He had 12 swinging strikes on just 82 pitches. His average exit velocity was just 79.7 mph. More importantly, it was his third start in four of that caliber, yielding a combined 1.35 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 10.8 K/9 with an 18 percent swinging-strike rate. Awesome stuff! Here's the rub: the one bad start during that four-start stretch was an eight-run, 12-hit disaster. So can we really trust him over the final two weeks? Well, he lines up for two starts next week, the first being against the Nationals. There's risk for sure, but the occasional eight-run implosion has been standard fare among the starting pitcher ranks this year.

    Clevinger (7-7) earned the win Friday, allowing three hits and zero walks over seven scoreless innings against Detroit. He struck out seven. Clevinger's one bit of trouble came in the second inning, when he allowed an infield single and a double sandwiched around a double play. He only allowed a single and a hit batter the rest of the way. This was a nice rebound from last weekend's matchup with the Tigers in which he allowed eight runs over four innings. He had been posting strong numbers from the start of June through August, allowing only 12 runs in 50.1 innings (2.15 ERA). Clevinger will take a 3.64 ERA into his next outing, likely to take place in a mid-week matchup at home against Kansas City.
