Player Outlook
Mike Clevinger was a legitimate upper-tier fantasy starter between 2018-20, registering a combined 2.91 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 416 strikeouts in 367.2 innings (61 starts) between Cleveland and San Diego. Then came a run of injuries, including Tommy John elbow surgery, and now he's only a semi-attractive streaming consideration in standard mixed leagues as he enters his age-33 campaign. Clevinger was posting strikeout percentages in the 27-33 range at his peak, but that number finished at 18.8 percent in 2022 and 20.0 percent in 2023. His fastball did come back to life a bit last year in Chicago and he put up a respectable 3.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 24 outings, but the right-hander struggles with durability, doesn't miss enough bats and is too prone to blowups at this point in his career.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Rehab paused due to stiff neck

Clevinger's (elbow) next rehab start has been pushed back to next week due to neck stiffness, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. Clevinger last pitched with Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday, when he allowed five runs and threw 71 pitches over 4.2 innings. The White Sox are hopeful that he will need just one more rehab start before rejoining their rotation, although that will be dependent on how he looks and feels. Clevinger is targeting 70-to-80 pitches in next week's rehab start.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Needs another rehab start

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Wednesday that Clevinger (elbow) will make another rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.comreports. The veteran right-hander threw 71 pitchers over 4.2 innings during his third rehab outing Sunday, and he'll continue building up his workload at Triple-A. Assuming that next outing goes well, Clevinger could step into Chicago's rotation during the first week of July.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Reaches fifth inning in rehab start

Clevinger (elbow) covered 4.2 innings in his rehab start Sunday with Triple-A Charlotte, striking out two while giving up five earned runs on seven hits and one walk. Making his second rehab start with Charlotte, Clevinger spotted 48 of his 71 pitches for strikes and faced off against 22 hitters. While Clevinger was knocked around a bit by Gwinnett and allowed three extra-base hits, at least from a workload standpoint, he looks ready to return from the 15-day injured list. He could be activated later this week to rejoin the White Sox rotation during their three-game home series versus the Rockies.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Two rehab starts required

Clevinger (elbow) is expected to make two starts at Triple-A Charlotte before returning to the White Sox during a seven-game homestand that begins June 24, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Clevinger is lined up for starts with Charlotte on Tuesday and June 23 and is expected to join the White Sox in the days after his June 23 outing. The 33-year-old was placed on the IL with right elbow inflammation May 28 but has been facing batters since June 7. Once healthy, Clevinger could knock Jonathan Cannon or Drew Thorpe out of the rotation.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Will throw BP

Clevinger (elbow) will throw batting practice Friday and willeventually require a rehab start or two, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports. Clevinger was placed on the 15-day injured list May 28 with right elbow inflammation. The 33-year-old had a late start to the season, making his White Sox debut near the beginning of May, and he is due for more time away from the majors as he builds himself back up.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Headed to IL with sore elbow

The White Sox placed Clevinger on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, retroactive to May 25, with right elbow inflammation, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Clevinger had been slated to start Tuesday's game against the Blue Jays but has landed on the IL instead. It's not yet clear how serious the injury is or how much time Clevinger might miss. Jake Woodford is coming up from Triple-A Charlotte to start Tuesday, and he could be needed for multiple outings.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Coughs up season-high five runs

Clevinger (0-3) took the loss against the Orioles on Thursday, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings. Clevinger went 1-2-3 through Baltimore's lineup over the first two innings before he began to unravel in the third, surrendering two hits and two walks in the frame. Things only got worse in the fourth when the right-hander gave up a leadoff homer to Anthony Santander, followed by a three-run shot by Jorge Mateo. Clevinger has lasted just 4.2 innings in each of his last three starts, posting five strikeouts in each of those outings. He's also given up at least three runs in three of his four starts and is still looking for his first win on the campaign.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Stuck with second loss

Clevinger (0-2) took the loss Friday, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings as the White Sox were downed 4-2 by the Yankees. He struck out five. The right-hander tossed 78 pitches (47 strikes) before exiting, failing to complete five innings for the third straight start since joining Chicago's rotation. Clevinger offers little fantasy appeal until he at least begins lasting long enough to qualify for a win, although the White Sox's struggling offense won't give him many opportunities for wins anyway. Clevinger will take a 5.56 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 10:6 K:BB through 11.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come next week in Toronto.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Shelled in season debut

Clevinger (0-1) took the loss Monday, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks over two innings against Tampa Bay. He had no strikeouts. Clevinger looked rough in his season debut Monday against the Rays, generating just one whiff from his 54 pitches. It was the second time he has failed to generate a strikeout in a start during his eight-year career -- first done Sept. 24, 2023 against Boston. Clevinger's next start is scheduled against his former team, Cleveland, at home this weekend.

Clevinger is ramping up his workload after signing with the White Sox a few days after the season began. He threw 60 pitches in his appearance Thursday and will increase his workload to 75 pitches in his next outing, which will also come with Charlotte. Assuming all goes well, Clevinger's third appearance of the campaign will come in the majors -- setting him up to debut around May 5.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Making first rehab start Thursday

Clevinger will make a rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday against Lehigh Valley, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Clevinger will be making his first start with a minor-league affiliate, as he has been pitching in extended spring training games after re-signing with the White Sox on a one-year deal April 2. Manager Pedro Grifol said Thursday that Clevinger will throw four innings and/or 60 pitches in his first start with Charlotte and then progress to five innings and/or 75 pitches in his next outing. Clevinger could be ready to join the White Sox's rotation after that, setting him up for his season debut as soon as May 5 in St. Louis.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: 'On schedule' for May debut

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said Saturday that Clevinger remains "on schedule" to join the big club at the beginning of May, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "Throwing the ball really good, he feels good, so he's on pace," Grifol said of Clevinger. "He's been in game action, yeah." After he didn't sign a one-year deal with the White Sox until April 2 -- just under a week after the regular season began -- Clevinger has been going through his own version of spring training at the organization's complex in Arizona. The White Sox have yet to assign Clevinger to a minor-league affiliate for a rehab assignment, as it seems as though the organization is content to have him get ramped up in simulated games at extended spring training. More details regarding when Clevinger might be ready to make his White Sox debut could come during the upcoming week, but for now, the expectation remains that he'll be cleared to make his first start in the first or second week of May.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Stays with South Siders

Clevinger agreed to a one-year contract with the White Sox on Monday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. After dealing away Dylan Cease to the Padres late in spring training, the White Sox had been in touch with Clevinger and were able to finalize a deal to bring him back to Chicago for a second season and fill the final spot in the rotation. While making 24 starts for the White Sox in 2023, the 33-year-old right-hander posted a 3.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 110:40 K:BB over 131.1 innings last season. Because he hadn't been participating in spring training and was going through a throwing progression at his home prior to striking a deal with Chicago, Clevinger will presumably require a ramp-up period and may not be ready to make his season debut for another week or two.

  • Mike Clevinger: ChiSox mulling reunion

The White Sox are having internal discussions about signing Clevinger, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. The White Sox are also reportedly in on Michael Lorenzen as they seek much-needed rotation reinforcements following the trade of Dylan Cease and move of Michael Kopech to the bullpen. Clevinger had a solid 2023 campaign with the White Sox, holding a 3.77 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 110:40 K:BB over 131.1 innings.

  • Mike Clevinger: Declines mutual option

After posting a 3.77 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across 131.1 innings in 24 starts, Clevinger will take a $4 million buyout and enter the open market. • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Destroyed by San Diego

Clevinger (9-9) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over 1.2 innings against the Padres. He struck out two. Clevinger hadn't allowed more than six hits or two earned runs in any of his previous four starts, but he yielded four runs in the first frame and two more in the second Saturday as he delivered his shortest outing of the season. The 32-year-old hurler had been on quite the run since returning from a bicep injury July 29, posting a 6-4 record with a 2.96 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 55:12 K:BB across 67 innings. However, Saturday's dud increased Clevinger's season-long ERA from 3.40 to 3.77 to go with a 1.23 WHIP and 110:40 K:BB across 131.1 innings - his biggest workload since 2018.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Tosses complete game

Clevinger (8-8) allowed one run on six hits over nine innings Monday, striking out seven and earning a victory over Washington. Clevinger was one out away from a shutout but served up a solo shot to Dominic Smith. Since getting tagged with eight runs by the Tigers on Sep. 2, Clevinger has allowed just two runs over his last 22 innings. He's recorded a 21:0 K:BB while lowering his season ERA from 3.90 to 3.42 during that span. Clevinger is currently projected to start in Boston this weekend.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Possible waiver wire pickups

I didn't include Clevinger in my 15 Pickups for Championship Week, but maybe I should have given how he performed Wednesday against the Royals, striking out seven while allowing just two earned runs in six innings. The deeper you dig, the more impressive it looks. He had 12 swinging strikes on just 82 pitches. His average exit velocity was just 79.7 mph. More importantly, it was his third start in four of that caliber, yielding a combined 1.35 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and 10.8 K/9 with an 18 percent swinging-strike rate. Awesome stuff! Here's the rub: the one bad start during that four-start stretch was an eight-run, 12-hit disaster. So can we really trust him over the final two weeks? Well, he lines up for two starts next week, the first being against the Nationals. There's risk for sure, but the occasional eight-run implosion has been standard fare among the starting pitcher ranks this year.

  • White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Rebounds against Tigers

Clevinger (7-7) earned the win Friday, allowing three hits and zero walks over seven scoreless innings against Detroit. He struck out seven. Clevinger's one bit of trouble came in the second inning, when he allowed an infield single and a double sandwiched around a double play. He only allowed a single and a hit batter the rest of the way. This was a nice rebound from last weekend's matchup with the Tigers in which he allowed eight runs over four innings. He had been posting strong numbers from the start of June through August, allowing only 12 runs in 50.1 innings (2.15 ERA). Clevinger will take a 3.64 ERA into his next outing, likely to take place in a mid-week matchup at home against Kansas City.
