Yu Darvish was pitching capably, albeit not at the All-Star level of previous years, before right elbow inflammation put him on the shelf at the end of August. A bone spur was discovered, ending his campaign, and at the time Darvish and his doctor could not rule out a cleanup procedure in the offseason. Darvish, now 37, has a history of elbow trouble including Tommy John surgery in 2015 and a stress reaction in 2018. He owns the record for the most strikeouts by a Japanese-born pitcher in MLB history, though his dominance has been fading in recent years (25.1 K% over the past two seasons). The team context is a mark in his favor, particularly the dimensions of Petco Park, but it's becoming increasingly tougher to justify the dice roll on his health with the skills in decline. The bone spur looms as a major concern -- surgery to shave or remove the spur would not necessarily solve all of Darvish's problems at this stage. Per his doctor, such a procedure could make the elbow too loose and open the right-hander up to other potential issues.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Imaging comes out clean

Darvish had imaging on his right elbow come back clean Wednesday, though he'll likely get additional imaging "for peace of mind," Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press reports. Darvish has recovered from a groin injury and was originally expected to come off the injured list to start Tuesday, but that plan was scrapped when he developed inflammation in his right elbow. Initial indications suggested that the issue is minor, and the clean imaging seems to support that, though San Diego will likely be cautious with the veteran hurler's return. It's not yet clear when Darvish will return to action or if he'll need to make any rehab starts given the extension of his absence.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Dealing with elbow inflammation

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Monday that Darvish (groin) won't be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday versus the Nationals due to "a little" right elbow inflammation, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Darvish had been slated to return from close to a month-long absence with a groin injury, but it's an elbow issue that will delay his activation even further. Shildt's wording would seem to suggest that Darvish is dealing with a minor setback, but a return to the rotation next week isn't guaranteed, especially after Darvish missed the final month of last season with a bone spur in the elbow. Adam Mazur was recalled from Triple-A El Paso and will start Tuesday.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Expected to start Tuesday

Darvish (groin) is scheduled to return from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Nationals, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Darvish will come off the IL to make his first start for the Padres since May 29 after a sore left groin resulted in a three-plus-week stay on the shelf. The 37-year-old made a minor-league rehab start with High-A Fort Wayne this past Wednesday, but since he only got up to 49 pitches, he'll be operating under some sort of workload restriction against the Nationals. Across 11 starts, Darvish owns a 3.20 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP with 53 strikeouts in 56.1 innings.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Next start will be in majors

Darvish (groin) is expected to come off the injured list to make his next start with San Diego, per MLB.com. Darvish struggled in a minor-league rehab start with High-A Fort Wayne on Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three batters over 3.1 innings. He threw only 49 pitches in that outing, but the Padres nonetheless appear intent on moving him back into the rotation for his next appearance. It hasn't yet been announced when Darvish will make that start, but given the typical time between outings, it's logical to expect Monday or Tuesday versus Washington to be the target date.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Making rehab start Wednesday

Padres manager Mike Shildt said that Darvish (groin) will make a rehab start Wednesday with High-A Fort Wayne, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. The upcoming rehab start will take a potential return from the 15-day injured list off the table this week, but Darvish shouldn't need more than one tune-up outing in the minors before slotting back into the San Diego rotation. Darvish previously bypassed a rehab assignment when he was on the IL earlier this season due to neck tightness, but the Padres will act more cautiously with the right-hander this time around while he works his way back from a left groin strain that has thus far kept him out for three weeks.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Tosses bullpen session

Darvish (groin) threw a bullpen session Friday, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Darvish simulated three innings in the session, tossing 60 pitches. The veteran hurler said before throwing the bullpen that he expects the session to be sufficient ramp-up to allow him to return to the Padres' rotation without a rehab assignment. Per Acee, Darvish could start a game during San Diego's homestand against Milwaukee that begins next Thursday.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Lands on injured list

The Padres placed Darvish on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a left groin strain. Darvish had to make an early exit from his start Wednesday against Miami due to hamstring problems, but the issue appears to instead be groin-related. His move to the IL is backdated to Thursday, allowing him to be eligible to return June 14. He will be joined by fellow starter Joe Musgrove (elbow) on the injured list while Randy Vasquez and Logan Gillaspie come up from Triple-A El Paso to take their places.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Status still being evaluated

The Padres are still evaluating Darvish's left hamstring injury and have not ruled out him making his next scheduled start Tuesday versus the Angels, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Darvish had to be lifted from Wednesday's outing against the Marlins after his hamstring tightened up on him. While it's a good sign he hasn't been placed on the 10-day injured list yet, no final determination has been made regarding his status for his next turn or a possible IL stint. More clarity on Darvish's situation should be available in the coming days.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Dealing with hamstring tightness

Darvish was removed from his start Wednesday against the Marlins due to left hamstring tightness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Darvish was pulled after three innings Wednesday, during which he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk while striking out two batters. Manager Mike Shildt said the right-hander is undergoing imaging, and the Padres should offer an update on his status once the results come back.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Hit hard Friday

Darvish (4-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out five over 5.2 innings Friday, taking the loss versus the Yankees. Darvish was done in by the long ball -- the Yankees teed off for four home runs against him, three of which came in the third inning. Prior to Friday, Darvish had allowed just two homers across his first nine starts of the season. It was a jarring end to his 24-inning scoreless streak, which coincided with a four-start winning streak. Even after this dud, the right-hander has a 3.04 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 51:14 K:BB over 53.1 innings across 10 starts. Darvish will look to keep the ball in the yard in his next start, which is tentatively projected to come at home versus the Marlins.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Dominates Atlanta for win

Darvish (4-1) got the win over Atlanta on Sunday night, throwing seven shutout innings while allowing just two hits and a walk. He struck out nine. Darvish continued his excellent run since returning from the injured list April 30 and is now up to 25 straight scoreless innings, having last given up a run April 14. He had one instance with facing runners in scoring position after a first inning double by Marcell Ozuna. He ended his night by retiring the last 13 batters he faced in order and generated a season-high nine strikeouts while getting 14 whiffs on 99 pitches. Darvish also picked up career win No. 200 and will take an excellent 2.08 ERA, 0.90 WHIP and 46:13 K:BB into his next start, which lines up to be against the Yankees during a weekend series.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: San Diego-Atlanta game postponed

Darvish and the Padres will not play Saturday after their game in Atlanta was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Monday. Darvish will be pushed back a day to start Sunday, which would also mean delaying Joe Musgrove's (elbow) return from the injured list to Monday.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Silences Dodgers over seven frames

Darvish (3-1) earned the win over the Dodgers on Sunday after firing seven shutout innings and allowing just two hits and a walk. He struck out seven. Darvish extended his scoreless innings streak to 17 innings in another dominant outing since returning from the injured list April 30. He retired the first 14 hitters he faced in order until walking Andy Pages with two outs in the fifth. Darvish generated an excellent 19 whiffs and tied his season high with seven strikeouts. The 37-year-old owns a 2.43 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 37:12 K:BB in 40.2 innings and lines up for another tough task against Atlanta his next time out.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Wins with scoreless outing

Darvish (2-1) yielded three hits and a walk over five shutout frames Monday, striking out five and earning a win over the Cubs. Darvish scattered baserunners throughout his outing but ultimately kept the Cubs quiet for five innings. He was 0-1 with a 4.18 ERA before a brief stint on the injured list. Since returning, he's fired 10 shutout frames and dropped that number to 2.94 across seven starts. Darvish matched his season best with 15 swinging strikes, eight of which came via the slider. Darvish is in line for a tough home matchup with the Dodgers this weekend.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Blanks reds over five innings

Darvish (1-1) grabbed a win over the Reds on Tuesday, tossing five shutout innings while allowing just three hits in the outing. He struck three and did not walk a batter. Darvish was finally able to pick up his first win of the season and help the Padres end a five-game losing streak. Tuesday was his first shutout effort since July 29 of last year. He was efficient, needing 70 pitches to get through five while inducing a bunch of weak contact. His strikeout numbers remain low in comparison to his career numbers, as he's now struck out three or fewer batters in three of his six starts so far. Still, Tuesday's outing was exactly what the Padres needed out of him, and he'll take a 3.45 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB into his next outing, which projects to be against the Cubs at the beginning of next week.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Reinstated for Tuesday's start

The Padres activated Darvish (neck) from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday against the Reds. The veteran right-hander has been sidelined the past couple weeks with neck tightness, but he'll rejoin San Diego's rotation Tuesday after a minimum-length stay on the injured list. Darvish posted a 4.18 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB across 23.2 innings through his first five starts of the season, and he could have some minor workload limitations in his first outing back with the Friars.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Set for Tuesday return

Darvish (neck) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday's game against the Reds, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports. Darvish landed on the IL on April 17 with neck tightness, but he'll be ready to return when first eligible after he checked out fine while throwing a bullpen session last Wednesday. Before his brief shutdown due to the injury, Darvish didn't display his best stuff through his first five outings of the 2024 campaign, posting a 4.18 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 22 punchouts over 23.2 frames.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Throws bullpen session

Darvish (neck) threw a bullpen session Wednesday, MLB.com reports. Darvish's bullpen session marked his first time throwing off a mound since he landed on the 15-day injured list April 17 with neck tightness. Padres manager Mike Shildt indicated that Darvish wasn't throwing with full effort, saying the right-hander "was on the gas, but didn't have it to the floor." Darvish will likely require at least one or two more bullpen sessions before progressing to facing hitters and then perhaps heading out on a rehab assignment. There's no clear timeline yet for his return to San Diego's rotation.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Shelved with neck tightness

The Padres placed Darvish on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with neck tightness. San Diego had previously confirmed Darvish to make his sixth start of the season Saturday versus Toronto, but the veteran right-hander's neck injury might have cropped up during a recent throwing session. His placement on the IL is retroactive to Monday, so Darvish will be eligible for activation as soon as April 30. The Padres recalled reliever Logan Gillaspie from Triple-A El Paso to take Darvish's spot on the 26-man active roster, but it's not immediately clear whom San Diego might turn to when Darvish's turn in the rotation comes up this weekend.

  • Padres' Yu Darvish: Lasts just three frames Monday

Darvish pitched three innings, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out four batters in a no-decision against the Cubs on Monday. All of the damage on the scoreboard against Darvish came in the second inning, when he retired the first two batters he faced before allowing six straight Cubs to reach base in a four-run outburst. The veteran hurler was pulled after three frames with San Diego down 4-0, but a late Padres offensive surge took him off the hook for his second loss. Darvish logged a season-low three innings in the contest while giving up a season-high four runs, so it's safe to say that this was his worst outing of the campaign so far. He's still pitched pretty well overall though, as he holds a 3.86 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB through four starts covering 18.2 frames.
