  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Yields two homers in ugly outing

Miller (3-2) blew the save and took the loss Tuesday against Toronto, allowing two solo home runs and striking out one in one-third of an inning.

Miller inherited a one-run lead and struck out Davis Schneider to open the bottom of the ninth. However, Bo Bichette and Addison Barger hit back-to-back solo homers to walk it off for the Blue Jays. The outing marked Miller's fourth blown save in 11 opportunities and snapped a streak of eight consecutive scoreless appearances. However, he still owns a quality 2.17 ERA in 29 innings this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Secures seventh save

Miller earned the save in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Mariners, allowing one hit with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.

Miller was summoned to protect a three-run lead in the ninth and needed just 14 pitches to do so. The 34-year-old has held opponents scoreless in nine of his past 10 appearances, converting four of five save chances during that stretch. He owns a 1.63 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 29:11 K:BB across 27.2 innings this season and should be the favorite to close games for the Diamondbacks with Justin Martinez (elbow) back on the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Earns sixth save

Miller earned the save in Thursday's 11-10 win over Atlanta, allowing one walk with no strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning.

With Justin Martinez unavailable after throwing 37 pitches Wednesday, Miller was called upon to protect an 11-10 lead in the ninth inning and did so on just 10 pitches. On the season, the 34-year-old owns a stellar 1.75 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 27:3 K:BB across 25.2 innings. He's converted six of nine save opportunities and should remain in the ninth-inning mix, though Martinez figures to be the favorite for saves when healthy.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Can't protect lead in 10th inning

Miller allowed three runs (two earned) on a hit, two intentional walks and a hit batsman over two-thirds of an inning, taking a blown save and the loss versus the Dodgers on Tuesday.

Miller has flirted with danger a few times in high-leverage spots, but prior to Tuesday, he had logged five saves, one hold and one blown save over his first eight appearances in May. He ended up taking a second blown save with a sloppy effort against the top of the Dodgers' order in the 10th inning Tuesday. Even with this meltdown, he's at a 2.18 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB across 20.2 innings while adding five saves, six holds and three blown saves. Miller has pitched three days in a row, so the Diamondbacks will likely have to turn elsewhere should a save situation arise in Wednesday's series finale.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Secures save with final out

Miller retired the only batter he faced to earn the save in Monday's 9-5 win over the Dodgers.

Ryan Thompson was initially tabbed with the ninth inning with Arizona ahead by six runs. He nearly made a mess of it, leaving two runners on with two outs, but Miller stepped in and got Hyeseong Kim on a groundout to end the threat. Miller has recorded saves in his last four outings, allowing one run with a 3:3 K:BB over 3.1 innings in that span. Overall, he's at a 1.35 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 22:8 K:BB with five saves and six holds through 20 innings. He appears to be the best bet as a fill-in closer while the Diamondbacks wait for Justin Martinez (shoulder) to be ready for action again. Martinez is expected back for this weekend's series in St. Louis, at which point Miller may end up back in a setup role.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Hangs on for fourth save

Miller picked up the save Sunday against Colorado, allowing two hits and one walk with one strikeout over a scoreless ninth inning.

Miller has served as a fill-in closer while A.J. Puk (elbow) and Justin Martinez (shoulder) spend time on the injured list. While Miller has gone 3-for-4 in save opportunities since landing ninth-inning duties, it hasn't been pretty. Miller had to escape a bases-loaded jam to secure his third save and loaded the bases again Sunday with one out before retiring Brenton Doyle and Michael Toglia to secure the save. Despite his struggles, Miller should remain Arizona's closer until Martinez returns, which looks like it'll be Friday for the start of a series against St. Louis.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Escapes with third save

Miller gave up a run on two hits and two walks in the ninth inning Wednesday to record his third save of the season in an 8-7 win over the Giants. He struck out one.

The veteran righty loaded the bases before walking LaMonte Wade with two outs to bring home a run, but Miller was able to coax a shallow fly to center field out of Christian Koss to end the game. Miller's converted three of his four save chances in six May appearances while adding a win and a hold as Arizona tries to piece together a high-leverage crew in the wake of injuries to Justin Martinez (shoulder) and A.J. Puk (elbow). However, Miller's 4.50 ERA, 1.83 WHIP and 6:3 K:BB through six innings on the month don't provide a lot of confidence that he'll remain a reliable closing option.

  • Diamondbacks' Shelby Miller: Secures second save

Miller struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Monday's 2-1 win over the Giants.

Closing opportunities are up for grabs in Arizona's bullpen, and Miller may be best positioned to take advantage in the short term. While he blew a save May 4 versus the Phillies, he's kept runs off the board in his other four outings in May. He's also been scored upon in just two of 17 appearances so far. Miller's at a 1.02 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 20:5 K:BB across 17.2 innings while adding two saves and six holds. His overall success will keep him in the late-inning mix, and he'll have some chances for saves while Justin Martinez (shoulder) works his way back.
