  • Jason Heyward: Cut by Friars

The Padres released Heyward on Tuesday.

Though Heyward appears to be healthy again after completing a five-game rehab assignment at Triple-A El Paso following a stint on the injured list, the Padres opted to designate him for assignment Saturday rather than adding him back to the 26-man active roster. He ended up going unclaimed off waivers, which doesn't come as a major surprise after he mustered a lowly .494 OPS over 94 plate appearances on the season for San Diego. Now a free agent, the 35-year-old outfielder will likely have to settle for a minor-league deal if he wants to keep his career going.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: DFA'd by San Diego

The Padres designated Heyward (oblique) for assignment Saturday.

Heyward served as the Padres' starting left fielder for the early part of the season, but he struggled at the plate with a .494 OPS. He's been on the injured list twice this season and is currently rehabbing a strained left oblique. Heyward could be claimed off waivers by a team looking to add depth to the outfield, as long a club is patient enough to wait for the veteran to fully recover from his injury. The move corresponds with Bryan Hoeing (shoulder) being activated from the 60-day injured list and Sean Reynolds being optioned to Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: In midst of rehab assignment

Heyward (oblique) began a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A El Paso on Friday, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Heyward's appearance Friday was his first game action since May 22. The veteran outfielder landed on the injured list two days later due to a strained left oblique, and it's unclear how many games he'll play with El Paso before he's ready to be activated. Heyward slotted in as the DH during his first rehab contest, so the Padres may want him to play the field at least once before bringing him back to the big club.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Lands on injured list

The Padres placed Heyward on the 10-day injured list Saturday due to a left oblique strain.

Heyward was left out of the starting lineup for a third consecutive game Saturday, and his oblique injury helps to explain why. He'll now be held out of action until at least early June upon moving to the IL, creating a pathway to regular playing time in left field for Brandon Lockridge, who will bat ninth Saturday. Luis Campusano was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Sitting Saturday

Heyward isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta.

Heyward will head to the bench for the third game in a row -- two of which have been against right-handed starters -- while Brandon Lockridge starts in left field and bats ninth. The 35-year-old Heyward is batting just .176 with a .494 OPS on the season, putting him at risk of falling down the depth chart.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Taking seat against RHP

Heyward is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Blue Jays.

The left-handed-hitting Heyward typically hits the bench when the Padres face southpaws, but the veteran outfielder will get a breather for the day game after a night game while Toronto sends righty Bowden Francis to the hill. Brandon Lockridge will step in as the Padres' starting left fielder in place of Heyward, who is batting just .179 on the season even with San Diego limiting his exposure to left-handed pitching.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: On bench Sunday

Heyward isn't part of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mariners.

Heyward is batting 4-for-30 (.133) in May, and he's seen his playing time dwindle over the last week. He's absent from the lineup for the third time in four games -- all against right-handed starters. Gavin Sheets will fill in at left field while Manny Machado shifts to DH and Jose Iglesias plays third base.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Idle Friday

Heyward isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against the Mariners.

After starting the month of May 3-for-26, Heyward will give way to Brandon Lockridge in left field for the third time in San Diego's last four games.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Sitting Wednesday

Heyward is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Angels on Wednesday.

Heyward has struggled at the plate this season and has gone 3-for-26 with one home run and six RBI since the beginning of May. Brandon Lockridge will start in left field and bat eighth while Heyward begins the game in the dugout.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Belts homer in rout

Heyward went 1-for-6 with a three-run home run and an additional run scored against Colorado in Saturday's 21-0 victory.

It's been a rough season so far for Heyward, who is batting just .191 on the campaign, but he got in on the fun during Saturday's offensive onslaught with a three-run homer to left field in the fourth inning. The veteran outfielder continues to start regularly against righties and sit against lefties, a situation that has resulted in him being in the lineup for just three of San Diego's past seven contests. Heyward's platoon role and lack of results this season make him difficult to roster in most fantasy formats.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Sitting against lefty again

Heyward is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Yankees.

With the Padres facing a left-handed starting pitcher (Carlos Rodon) for the third game in a row, the lefty-hitting Heyward will remain on the bench. Oscar Gonzalez will fill in for Heyward in left field.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Idle against lefty

Heyward is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.

The left-handed-hitting Heyward will hit the bench for the second day in a row while the Pirates send another lefty (Andrew Heaney) to the hill for the series finale. Platoon mate Oscar Gonzalez will replace Heyward as the Friars' starting left fielder.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Returns from injured list

The Padres reinstated Heyward (knee) from the injured list Tuesday.

Heyward landed on the injured list April 19 with knee inflammation, but he won't need any more than the minimum 10 days before returning to the Padres' lineup. Prior to his injury, the 35-year-old had been slashing .233/.303/.333 across 33 plate appearances since the start of April.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Goes on IL due to knee injury

The Padres placed Heyward on the 10-day injured list Saturday, retroactive to April 17, due to left knee inflammation.

Heyward was removed before Friday's game against the Astros due to a left knee issue. Further tests have revealed inflammation in the left knee area, which prompted Heyward's placement on the injured list. The veteran outfielder is eligible to be activated off the IL on April 27, but a clearer timeline will be established once he undergoes treatment. Tirso Ornelas was recalled from Triple-A El Paso in a corresponding move, and Oscar Gonzalez could see some starts in the outfield while Heyward is sidelined.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Not in lineup Saturday

Heyward (knee) is not in the Padres' starting lineup against the Astros on Saturday.

Heyward was scratched from Friday's game due to left knee soreness, and the issue has persisted enough to keep him out of Saturday's lineup. Oscar Gonzalez, Connor Joe and Fernando Tatis will man the outfield for San Diego.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Scratched Friday

Heyward was scratched from the lineup ahead of Friday's game versus Houston due to left knee soreness.

The severity of Heyward's injury is unknown, though the Padres may be simply sitting him as a precaution. While the 35-year-old rests, Oscar Gonzalez will enter the starting nine to cover left field and bat sixth.

  • Padres' Jason Heyward: Getting afternoon off

Heyward is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

As usual, the left-handed-hitting Heyward will hit the bench while the opposition sends a lefty (Matthew Boyd) to the hill. Oscar Gonzalez will draw the start in left field Wednesday and could continue to occupy the short side of a platoon with Heyward.
