  • Jared Jones SP | PIT

Pirates' Jared Jones: Exits with strained lat

Jones was removed from his start Wednesday versus St. Louis due to a right lat strain, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.

Jones managed to get through five innings of one-run ball while striking out five batters and walking two before coming out of Wednesday's contest. The 22-year-old said after the game that he could have kept pitching if necessary, but the team opted for a cautious approach in order to prevent his injury from worsening. Pittsburgh will keep an eye on Jones' lat as his next start approaches, but the initial level of concern seems relatively low.

  • Dodgers' J.P. Feyereisen: Removed from 40-man

The Dodgers sent Feyereisen outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.

Feyereisen was optioned to Triple-A on June 21 after posting an 8.18 ERA in 11 innings with the big-league club, and he has now officially lost his 40-man spot to Matt Gage. The 31-year-old Feyereisen hasn't found much success in the minors this season either (6.75 ERA in 18.2 innings), so a return to the big leagues in 2024 doesn't seem likely given Los Angeles' bullpen depth.

  • German Marquez SP | COL

Rockies' German Marquez: Set for two more rehab starts

Manager Bud Black said Wednesday that Marquez (elbow) will make two more rehab starts with Double-A Hartford, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.

Marquez struggled heavily in his latest rehab outing at Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, allowing four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning and throwing just 33 pitches. The 29-year-old righty was originally slated for just one additional start after Friday, but his abbreviated appearance will cause the Rockies to add another game to his rehab stint, ruling him out for a return to Colorado before the All-Star break. Since restarting his assignment June 12, Marquez has allowed eight earned runs in 8.2 innings while striking out 13 batters and walking three.

  • Alek Thomas CF | ARI

Diamondbacks' Alek Thomas: Not starting Wednesday

Thomas isn't in Arizona's lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Dodgers, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Thomas went 0-for-3 with a walk Tuesday in his first game back from a three-month stint on the injured list, and he'll take a seat on the bench Wednesday as he eases his way back into regular playing time in Arizona's outfield. Corbin Carroll will shift to center field while Thomas rests, opening up right field for Jake McCarthy.

  • Yency Almonte RP | CHC

Cubs' Yency Almonte: Shut down from throwing

Almonte will be shut down from throwing after receiving a second opinion on his right shoulder strain Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Manager Craig Counsell noted Wednesday that Almonte "didn't get great news" during his second opinion, and the right-hander will decide whether to resume rehab through a strengthening program or undergo surgery for his strained right shoulder, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. Before landing on the injured list in May, Almonte registered six holds and one save over 17 outings with a 3.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB across 15.2 innings. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list June 27, and the 30-year-old could be on the shelf for the rest of the season if he opts for surgery.

  • Cristian Mena SP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Cristian Mena: Recalled ahead of start Wednesday

The Diamondbacks recalled Mena from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Mena was in the Diamondbacks' clubhouse Tuesday, and manager Torey Lovullo noted that the right-hander, if officially called up, would deserve the opportunity to start Wednesday, per PHNX Diamondbacks. Mena was part of the package acquired by the Diamondbacks from the White Sox in the Dominic Fletcher trade in February. Mena has spent the entire year in Reno, and over his 16 minor-league starts, the 21-year-old is 3-2 with a 4.90 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 89:38 K:BB over 82.2 innings. He will make his major-league debut Wednesday on the road against the Dodgers.

  • Diamondbacks' Gavin Hollowell: Sent back to Reno

The Diamondbacks optioned Hollowell to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Hollowell joined the big-league club Tuesday, but he'll now return to the minors without appearing in a game for the D-backs. Cristian Mena will take Hollowell's place on the active roster and start Wednesday's game versus the Athletics.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | SF

Giants' LaMonte Wade: On bench vs. lefty

Wade is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

Wade has gone 3-for-13 with a double and a solo homer in three games since returning from the injured list, but he will take a seat for Wednesday's contest as southpaw Chris Sale starts for Atlanta. David Villar will man first base and bat sixth for the Giants.

  • Padres' Bryce Johnson: Sitting Wednesday

Johnson isn't in the Padres' lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers.

Johnson will receive a breather Wednesday after going 1-for-3 during a loss in Tuesday's series opener. David Peralta will take over in right field and bat seventh.

  • Janson Junk RP | MIL

Brewers' Janson Junk: Back with Brewers

The Brewers recalled Junk from Triple-A Nashville on Wednesday.

Since his last appearance in the majors May 5, Junk has posted a 1.17 ERA and 1.24 WHIP alongside a 19:5 K:BB across 15.1 innings in Triple-A. He'll now be called upon to add depth to Milwaukee's bullpen as Enoli Paredes (forearm) heads to the injured list.
