  • Rays' Shane Baz: Gives up pair of homers

Baz allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six in 4.2 innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. Baz jumped out to a great start by retiring seven in a row while striking out four. His second time through the order wasn't as successful, as Bo Bichette and Daulton Varsho took him deep in the third and fourth frames. Baz failed to make it to five innings for a second straight outing and has struggled after a really strong beginning to the season. Over his last five starts, Baz owns a 7.88 ERA, 1.71 WHIP and 19:12 K:BB. He'll aim to bounce back in a road matchup versus the Marlins this weekend.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Struggles again in second loss

Baz (3-2) took the loss Wednesday against the Phillies after allowing six runs on eight hits and two walks in 3.1 innings. He struck out three. After giving up a season-high seven runs on nine hits in his last start, Baz struggled mightily once again. Wednesday matched his shortest outing of the season, and the right-hander has now yielded five runs or greater in three of his last four appearances. During this stretch, Baz has a 8.38 ERA and 13:10 K:BB over 19.1 innings. He'll look to get back on track in his next scheduled start against the Blue Jays, who have a weak .643 OPS against right-handed pitching through 35 games.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Labors in no-decision

Baz did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-8 extra-inning win against the Yankees, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Baz entered with three straight quality starts but couldn't escape the fourth inning Saturday in his shortest outing of the season. He struggled with command, generating just eight whiffs on 83 pitches while issuing four walks for the second time in four starts. The 25-year-old will carry a 3.22 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB across 22.1 innings into a road matchup with the Mariners next weekend.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Pushed back to Monday

Baz will no longer start Sunday's game against Atlanta as planned and will instead make his next turn through the rotation Monday versus the Red Sox in Tampa, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The Rays are in the midst of a busy period in their schedule, so the team has elected to temporarily add a sixth man to the rotation. Joe Boyle was recalled from Triple-A Durham and will take the hill Sunday, and he will either shift to the bullpen or head back to the minors after the game. Baz now lines up for two starts during the upcoming week, with his second turn potentially coming next Saturday at home versus the Yankees.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Fans six in no-decision

Baz allowed two runs on three hits and four walks over seven innings in a no-decision Tuesday. He struck out six during the loss to the Angels. Baz faced a few threats, but the lone blemish on his outing was Kyren Paris' two-run shot in the second inning. Baz threw 58 of 96 pitches for strikes but generated only eight whiffs. He forced 13 swinging strikes in his first start of the season. Baz is sporting a 1.38 ERA with a 16:4 K:BB through 13 innings. His next outing is lined up to be at home against Atlanta this weekend.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Encouraged despite tough results

Baz was happy with his outing Thursday against the Nationals despite allowing four earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks across 4.1 innings, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Baz was hit hard early, as he allowed two singles and a homer to the first three batters he faced. He managed to settle in from there, and more importantly, both he and manager Kevin Cash were happy with the shape and execution of his pitches. Baz has allowed 10 earned runs with a 4:5 K:BB across 9.1 innings this spring, though his rotation spot seems secure given there haven't been signs of panic from either he or the team.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Six strong innings

Baz allowed one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings Sunday against the Blue Jays. He did not factor into the decision. Baz dominated early and held the Blue Jays without a hit through three innings. His only true trouble came in the fourth when he escaped a bases-loaded jam by allowing only one earned run. There were other positives from the performance, as Baz didn't allow a home run for the first time in his last four starts. He has also allowed only one walk in each of his last three outings and has complied a 16:3 K:BB across 18.1 innings during that span.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Breezes to third win

Baz (3-3) earned the win Tuesday against the Red Sox, allowing two runs on two hits and one walk over seven innings. He struck out six. The 25-year-old flamethrower was outstanding in this 96-pitch performance, generating an impressive 18 whiffs -- with 10 alone coming on his fastball -- en route to his six punchouts. All the damage Boston was able to do came via a Triston Casas two-run homer in the second inning. This marks the fifth consecutive outing in which Baz has yielded two or fewer runs, as he's pitched to a 2.03 ERA, 0.74 WHIP and 24:11 K:BB over 31 innings during that span. He is scheduled to make his next start against Toronto at home this weekend.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Loses despite quality start

Baz (2-3) allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks over six innings Friday, striking out five and taking a loss against Baltimore. Baz worked through four shutout frames before coughing up a run in the fifth inning. He then gave up a solo shot to Gunnar Henderson in the sixth. Baz forced 15 swinging strikes, including six with his curveball. He's allowed two or fewer runs in six of his 10 appearances since returning from the injured list. Baz has produced a 3.27 ERA and a 46:23 K:BB across 55 innings. He's currently in line to start in Philadelphia next week.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Expected back Saturday

Baz (illness) is expected to start Saturday against the Padres, MLB.com reports. Baz was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday against the Dodgers, but he played catch Wednesday and is expected to throw a bullpen session Thursday. Assuming the side session goes well, he'll be lined up for a return to the rotation this weekend.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Scratched from Sunday's start

Baz is battling the flu and won't start Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports. Baz is feeling under the weather and won't make his scheduled start. It's unclear if the Rays intend to push Baz back a few days or skip his turn in the rotation entirely, and they have yet to name a replacement starter for Sunday.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Sharp in no-decision

Baz allowed two runs, six hits and one walk while striking out five over 5.1 innings in a no-decision against the Astros on Friday. Baz ran into trouble in the fourth inning but otherwise worked in and out of trouble in another solid showing for the young right-hander. Baz is still looking for his first win of the season, but he's yet to allow more than three runs in any of his five starts. The 25-year-old has five or more strikeouts in four starts this season and will carry a 3.60 ERA into a matchup vs the Cardinals next week.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Five walks lead to early exit

Baz did not factor into the decision Sunday against the Yankees, allowing no runs on four hits and five walks over 3.1 innings. He struck out one. On the plus side, Baz was able to keep the Yankees off the board during his first scoreless outing in three starts this season. However, he recorded only 10 outs while allowing nine batters to reach base, issuing a career-high five bases on balls. Baz has a pedigree for success as a former highly touted prospect, and he pitched well in Triple-A prior to his July 5 call-up, posting a 1.57 ERA with 35 strikeouts across 23 innings. His next start is tentatively slated to take place next weekend when the Rays host the Reds.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Remains in rotation

Baz is scheduled to start Thursday's game against the Yankees at Tropicana Field. Baz will make a second straight turn through the Tampa Bay rotation as he continues to fill the spot that belonged to Aaron Civale, who was traded to the Brewers last week. After being called up from Triple-A Durham on Friday to make his first start for the Rays since July 10, 2022, Baz struck out six while allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk over six innings in a loss to the Rangers. Though he maintains a hold on a rotation spot for now, Baz could still be at some risk of losing out on a starting role once Jeffrey Springs (elbow) eventually returns from the 60-day injured list.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Officially recalled for start

The Rays recalled Baz from Triple-A Durham on Friday, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. He will start Friday in Texas against the Rangers, taking the rotation spot vacated by Aaron Civale, who was traded to the Brewers earlier this week. Baz will be making his first major-league start since July 2022, as he missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The young right-hander had been heating up at Durham in June, collecting a 1.57 ERA and 35:10 K:BB across 23 innings. Baz will have a good shot to remain in the Rays rotation for the rest of the season and needs to be picked up in most fantasy leagues where he's still available.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Logs best start at Triple-A

Baz struck out 10 over five innings while allowing one run on three hits and two walks Saturday for Triple-A Durham. This was the electric righty's best start since undergoing Tommy John surgery in late September of 2022. He has a 3.92 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings over his last five starts at Triple-A. The Rays have five healthy starters, but it seems like Baz is finally ready to rejoin the fray whenever the team sees an opening.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Activated, optioned to Triple-A

The Rays reinstated Baz (elbow/oblique) from the 15-day injured list Thursday and optioned him to Triple-A Durham. Baz has been on the IL all season while completing the final stages of recovery from his July 2022 Tommy John surgery in addition to a pair of oblique injuries. The 24-year-old righty started four games at Triple-A during his rehab assignment, posting a 6.00 ERA and 1.92 WHIP while striking out eight batters and walking 11 through 12 innings. He'll remain with Durham despite being fully healthy, though Baz should get the chance to join the Tampa Bay rotation at some point this season if he can eventually show improvement at Triple-A.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Logs four innings in rehab start

Baz (elbow/oblique) allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out four across four innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Durham on Wednesday. Baz turned in his best rehab appearance since starting the assignment May 4. He's still dealing with control issues, as he has walked 11 batters across 12 innings, though that shouldn't come as a significant surprise given his lengthy layoff since undergoing Tommy John surgery in July 2022. The Rays will likely want him to make at least one more start in the minors, but he could rejoin the big-league rotation in early June.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Shows improvement

Baz (elbow) struck out three and allowed one earned run on five hits and two walks over 3.1 innings Thursday in the third start of his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham. After issuing five walks in just 1.2 innings in his second rehab start, Baz demonstrated improved control. Though he still walked two of the 17 batters (11.8 percent) he faced, the right-hander spotted 49 of his 69 pitches for strikes. Baz will likely make at least one more rehab start for Durham before the Rays bring him back from the 15-day injured list.

  • Rays' Shane Baz: Headed to Durham for rehab

Baz (elbow) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Durham either Saturday or Sunday, MLB.com reports. Baz has thrown in two extended spring training games, the most recent of which came Monday. The next step in his recovery will come at Triple-A Durham to build up his pitch count. There is no specific timeline for Baz to return, but it's possible that he'll be back in late May.
