Canario was traded from the Cubs to the Mets in exchange for cash considerations Monday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Canario has showcased plenty of power during his time in the minors. He belted 18 home runs at Triple-A Iowa during the 2024 campaign, though he's appeared in only 21 total games in the major leagues during his professional career. Canario will get a spot on the 40-man roster upon his arrival to New York with the Mets freeing up a spot by placing Nick Madrigal (shoulder) on the 60-day injured list.... See More ... See Less

Cubs' Alexander Canario: Removed from 40-man roster
The Cubs designated Canario for assignment Thursday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Justin Turner, whose signing has been made official. Canario has an .857 OPS but a 42.2 percent strikeout rate during his brief time in the majors over the last two seasons. Strikeout issues and a lack of minor-league options could limit Canario's appeal, but the Cubs should be able to find a trade partner willing to gamble on the 24-year-old's power upside.... Cubs' Alexander Canario: Getting reps at first
Canario received reps at first base Tuesday as the Cubs explore their reserve options behind starter Michael Busch, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The 24-year-old Canario has a good chance to make the Opening Day roster since he's out of minor-league options, and adding some positional versatility might help him secure a bench job. Canario has played in just 21 big-league games, striking out 19 times in 45 plate appearances, which is consistent with his 30.4 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A Iowa last year.... See More ... Cubs' Alexander Canario: Out of options
Canario has a good chance at making Chicago's Opening Day roster in a bench role, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. After appearing in six games for the Cubs as a rookie in 2023, Canario saw 15 games of action last year. He's still just 24 years old and hit for significant power at Triple-A last year (.514 SLG, .271 ISO), but the main reason he's a favorite to make the club is that he's out of minor-league options. Given that Canario has a 42.2 percent strikeout rate and 4.4 percent walk rate in the majors and struck out at a 30.4 percent clip in the minors last year, he'd likely be limited to work against southpaws if he makes the club.... Cubs' Alexander Canario: Out with hamstring strain
Triple-A Iowa placed Canario on its 7-day injured list Friday with a right hamstring strain, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Iowa deactivated Canario just over a week after he was carted off the field with the injury July 24 against Indianapolis. The 24-year-old outfielder is without a clear timeline to return to action. Canario retains a spot on the Cubs' 40-man roster but had been with Iowa since July 19 following a brief stint with the big club. He maintains a .243/.336/.514 slash line over 283 plate appearances at the Triple-A level for the season.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Returns to Triple-A
The Cubs optioned Canario to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. The 24-year-old was called up by the Cubs just ahead of the All-Star break and will now return to Triple-A with Mike Tauchman (groin) being activated from the injured list. Canario has appeared in 15 big-league games this season and has a .280/.357/.440 slash line, but with a 39.3 percent strikeout rate.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Joins big-league club
The Cubs recalled Canario from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The 24-year-old was up with the Cubs early in the season and posted an .815 OPS in 25 plate appearances, and he'll receive another look as Cody Bellinger heads to the injured list with a fractured finger. Canario could have at least a semi-regular role with Bellinger and Mike Tauchman (groin) both sidelined.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Optioned to Triple-A
The Cubs optioned Canario to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. He's clearing out to make room for Cody Bellinger's (ribs) return from the injured list. Canario went 6-for-22 with one home run during his brief time up with the big club.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Cranks first home run
Canario went 2-for-6 with a walk, a solo home run and an additional run scored across both games of Saturday's doubleheader against the Marlins. Canario started in left field and batted ninth in both contests, and he delivered his first 2024 home run in the nightcap. With Ian Happ (hamstring) and Seiya Suzuki (oblique) both out of the lineup for the immediate future, Canario should see more playing time in the short term. The 23-year-old will eventually settle back into a reserve role or return to the minors, but he has a chance to make a strong impression while he's in this elevated role.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Set for first start of 2024
Canario is starting in right field and batting ninth Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks. Canario was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, and he'll now draw his first major-league start of the 2024 campaign. The 23-year-old produced a .269/.377/.481 slash line with seven extra-base hits, including two homers, over 52 at-bats with Iowa so far this season. With Seiya Suzuki (oblique) expected to miss at least four weeks, Canario will look to carve out a consistent role with the big-league club for the time being.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Belts slam for first MLB homer
Canario went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and five RBI in Tuesday's 14-1 win of the Pirates. Making his first big-league start and batting ninth as the DH, the 23-year-old helped put the finishing touches on the rout by slugging his first career homer in the eighth inning -- a grand slam off Kyle Nicolas. Canario has flashed big-time power in the minors, launching eight homers in 36 games for Triple-A Iowa this season after mashing 30 over 101 games in the high minors the year before, but he still needs to prove he can make consistent enough contact against major-league pitching to become a significant part of the Cubs' future.... Cubs' Alexander Canario: Gets first big-league start
Canario will serve as the designated hitter and bat ninth Tuesday versus the Pirates. Canario has spent most of September on the Cubs' active major-league roster, but this will be his first appearance in the starting lineup. The 23-year-old put up an .866 OPS with eight homers, 35 RBI, two steals and 23 runs scored in 36 games for Triple-A Iowa prior to arriving in Chicago.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Sent down Monday
Canario was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Monday. Canario received only one at-bat after being called up on the first day of the month, so the Cubs decided to send him back to Iowa to open up a roster spot for fellow outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Officially summoned from minors
Canario was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Canario has missed a big chunk of this season due to injury but posted an .866 OPS with eight homers and two steals in 36 games since joining Triple-A Iowa in mid-July. The 23-year-old probably isn't going to play much down the stretch but offers an intriguing option off the bench.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Playing again at Triple-A
Canario (shoulder/ankle) has gone 2-for-11 with a walk, an RBI and a run in three games since being reinstated from Triple-A Iowa's 60-day injured list Friday. Canario made his 2023 debut for Iowa over the weekend after missing the first four-plus months of the season while recovering from offseason surgeries for his ankle and left shoulder. The 23-year-old outfielder -- who posted a .786 OPS over his 16-game rehab assignment between the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and High-A South Bend -- could need some time to knock off rust before he rediscovers the power/speed combination he displayed during the 2022 campaign. Over stops at South Bend, Double-A Tennessee and Iowa last season, Canario popped 37 home runs and stole 23 bases in 26 attempts over 534 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Optioned to Triple-A
Canario (ankle, shoulder) was optioned to Triple-A Iowa by the Cubs on Friday. Canario is still recovering from a fractured left ankle and dislocated left shoulder he suffered while playing in the Dominican Winter League back in October. The 22-year-old is close to being cleared for baseball activities but could get a late start to the season for Iowa.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Nearing baseball activities
Canario (ankle/shoulder) said Thursday that he expects to be cleared for baseball activities in "a week or so," Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports. Canario fractured his left ankle and dislocated his left shoulder while playing in the Dominican Winter League back in October. Both injuries required surgery, but he's made steady progress and should be able to return to live competition within the first half of 2023. The 22-year-old outfield prospect put up a shiny .899 OPS with 37 home runs and 23 stolen bases in 125 games last summer between High-A South Bend, Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa.... Cubs' Alexander Canario: Timeline coming into view
Canario underwent surgery on his fractured left ankle last week, and he's scheduled to have surgery on his dislocated left shoulder this week, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. Canario suffered both injuries while playing in the Dominican winter league, and the club has since confirmed that the outfielder will not be ready for the start of the 2023 season. The Cubs will likely wait until his second procedure has been completed before providing more information on Canario's timeline for a return.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Alexander Canario: Injured in winter league
Canario suffered a severe ankle break and a shoulder injury Thursday while playing in the Dominican winter league, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports. Canario suffered the injury after landing on first base awkwardly while trying to beat out a grounder. His expected recovery timeline is not yet clear, though it's possible the fracture is significant enough to cost him time next season. If healthy, Canario could push for a big-league role early next year, as he hit .252/.343/.556 with 37 home runs in 125 games across the three highest levels of the minors in 2022 while making the majority of his starts in center field.... Giants' Alexander Canario: Nursing back injury
Canario was scratched from Tuesday's lineup for Low-A San Jose with a back injury, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. The severity of the injury remains unclear, but Canario will be forced to miss at least one contest. The 21-year-old has a .239/.330/.440 slash line with nine homers, 29 RBI, 43 runs and 15 stolen bases in 64 games for San Jose this season.... See More ... See Less
