Clemson starting kicker Greg Huegel will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL on a kick attempt during Wednesday's practice.
According to coach Dabo Swinney, a defensive player rolled into him after a kick attempt on the last play of practice.
"It was a freak accident on the last play of practice on Wednesday," Swinney said in a release. "We were in the two-minute drill, which we do at the end of every Wednesday practice. A defensive player rolled into him after his kick. He walked off the practice field and we hoped it was just a strain or a bruise, but the tests revealed a torn ACL.
"It is a big loss, we are talking about a two-time all-conference kicker. But, I have confidence in our kickers. Alex Spence will move up. He is in his fourth year with our program and has shown great improvement this year. He really had a good August camp."
Huegel, a junior from Blythewood, South Carolina, has handled the place-kicking duties for the Tigers for the last three seasons and has been the kickoff specialist for the last two years. His backup and the new starting kicker, Alex Spence, has seen action in six games over the last three years, mostly on kickoffs.
