Kings' Erik Portillo: Returns to minors
Portillo was reassigned to AHL Ontario on Wednesday.
The Kings promptly returned Portillo to the minors after acquiring Pheonix Copley from Tampa Bay on Wednesday for future considerations. Copley could compete for playing time with Anton Forsberg if Darcy Kuemper (lower body) misses any game action. The 25-year-old Portillo has a 3.50 GAA and an .854 save percentage in two outings with Ontario this year.

Kings' Erik Portillo: Recalled by Los Angeles
Portillo was recalled from AHL Ontario on Wednesday, Russell Morgan of Hockey Royalty reports.
Portillo made his NHL debut for the Kings in November of 2024, and he'll provide goaltending depth behind Darcy Kuemper and Anton Forsberg. In two minor-league appearances this year, Portillo has gone 1-0-1 with a 3.50 GAA and an .854 save percentage.

Portillo was reassigned to the minors Wednesday, but he'll rejoin the NHL club a day later with two games remaining on the Kings' preseason schedule. Despite being recalled Thursday, the 25-year-old will likely head back to the minors before the start of the regular season.

Portillo was reassigned to AHL Ontario on Wednesday.
Los Angeles also sent Kenny Connors, Francesco Pinelli, Jared Wright, Jakub Dvorak, Jack Millar, Tim Rego, Otto Salin, Kirill Kirsanov and Isaiah Saville to Ontario. The 25-year-old Portillo had a 2.82 GAA and an .889 save percentage across 24 regular-season outings with Ontario in 2024-25. Portillo is believed to be behind Darcy Kuemper, Anton Forsberg and Pheonix Copley in the depth charts, so Portillo isn't likely to start for the Kings unless at least two goaltenders are injured.

Kings' Erik Portillo: Starting against Ducks
Portillo will protect the home goal versus the Ducks in Saturday's preseason game, Zach Dooley of the Kings' official site reports.
Portillo is likely to begin 2025-26 in the AHL, as he is probably no higher than fourth on the Kings' organizational depth chart in goal. The 25-year-old made his NHL debut last year, winning his lone appearance with 28 saves on 29 shots to defeat the Ducks on Nov. 29, 2024. He was sidelined by a back injury in February, and Saturday's outing will be his preseason debut.

Kings' Erik Portillo: Wins NHL debut
Portillo made 28 saves in his NHL debut Friday in a 2-1 win over the Ducks.
Portillo was fantastic, and he even made the NHL record book with the win. He's just the second goalie in NHL history to win his NHL debut when he started the game but had another goaltender on his team log an appearance. Portillo blew off a skate blade and needed a repair that took longer than the length of a standard stoppage. Portillo is the goalie that got away from the Sabres, who drafted him, but he refused to sign there, and they traded his rights to the Kings. He has a strong upside and plays inside a strong system. His future is bright.

Kings' Erik Portillo: Making first career NHL start
Portillo will start in Friday's game against the Ducks, Zach Dooley of the Kings' official site reports.
Portillo was recalled from AHL Ontario last Sunday, and the 24-year-old will make the first start of his career after dressing as the backup goaltender in the Kings' last few games since being called up. Portillo has a 4-2-0 record with Ontario this season, posting a 2.68 GAA and a .906 save percentage.

David Rittich will get the start Saturday versus Detroit, while Portillo will be the backup. Portillo was 3-2-0 with a 3.02 GAA and an .891 save percentage over five AHL appearances to begin the season.

Portillo posted a 24-11-3 record with a 2.50 GAA and a .918 save percentage in 39 regular-season appearances with AHL Ontario in 2023-24. The 24-year-old will likely be limited to the AHL again in 2024-25 -- the Kings currently have three veteran netminders in training camp.
