The Chicago Blackhawks found their new coach. The team announced Tuesday that it hired Jeff Blashill, former coach of the Detroit Red Wings.

In the team's official announcement, Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said Blashill's wealth of experience at multiple levels of hockey was key in the decision.

"Jeff is an incredibly smart and talented coach who boasts more than 25 years of coaching experience across developmental leagues, the NHL and the world stage," Davidson said. "He's thrived when in a position to develop young players and has shown he's capable of blending that into overall team success, a vision and philosophy we share for where we are today and where we see our team in the future. We couldn't be more excited for what's to come under Jeff's direction."

The Blackhawks have to hope that Blashill learned from his last opportunity with the Red Wings. In six seasons, Blashill compiled a 204-261-72 record with just one playoff appearance.

Over the last three seasons, Blashill has worked as an assistant coach under Jon Cooper with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Elsewhere around the coaching carousel, the Vancouver Canucks promoted assistant coach Adam Foote. He replaced Rick Tocchet who takes over the Philadelphia Flyers, the team that drafted him as a player.

Additionally, he Anaheim Ducks hired Joel Quenneville, who returns to an NHL bench for the first time since 2021. Quenneville hasn't coached since resigning when he was seven games into his third season with the Florida Panthers. Following an independent investigations into the Chicago Blackhawks' handling of sexual assault allegations during the team's 2010 Stanley Cup run, Quenneville was ineligible to work in the NHL for three years.

In July of 2024, Quenneville was reinstated by NHL commissioner Gary Bettman after showing what was described as "sincere remorse."
