Brandon Smith: Cut loose
Smith was waived by Carolina on Tuesday, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.
After spending a fourth-round pick on Smith just one year ago, the team has decided to move on. The 22-year-old appeared in 12 games (one start) for Carolina last year, and he logged eight tackles before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

Panthers' Brandon Smith: Returns to field
Smith (ankle), who finished last season on injured reserve, has been participating in OTAs, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
The 2022 fourth-round pick last saw game action in Week 14, but he's evidently past his ankle issue and has been spotted taking reps at inside linebacker during Carolina's OTAs. Prior to suffering the season-ending injury, Smith logged eight tackles in 12 games.

Panthers' Brandon Smith: IR-bound with ankle injury
Carolina placed Smith (ankle) on its injured reserve list Saturday, Darin Gantt of the Panthers' official site reports.
Smith will now have to miss the remainder of the regular season recovering from an ankle injury he sustained during Carolina's win at Seattle in Week 14. The Panthers are still mathematically alive in the NFC playoff race, so it's not certain that the rookie fourth-rounder's season is over just yet.

Smith (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's contest against the Steelers.
Smith will be forced to miss Week 15 after suffering an ankle injury in the Panthers' Week 14 win over the Seahawks. In his absence, Cory Littleton (ankle) could see a slight uptick in usage versus Pittsburgh.
