  • Steelers' Blake Martinez: Will have bigger role Sunday

With Elandon Roberts (pectoral) ruled out for Sunday's Week 17 game against the Seahawks, coach Mike Tomlin said Martinez would likely get to play, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The veteran linebacker has been inactive four of the last five games and has played just 21 defensive snaps this season. Cole Holcomb, Kwon Alexander and Chapelle Russell are on injured reserve, forcing Pittsburgh to dig deep into its linebacker reserves. Mykal Walker and Myles Jack finished Week 16 as the Steelers' linebackers.

  • Steelers' Blake Martinez: Signs with Pittsburgh

The Steelers signed Martinez off the Panthers' practice squad Tuesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Martinez announced his retirement from the NFL in November of last year but recently returned to the league, signing with Carolina's practice squad earlier this month. With all of the Steelers' linebacker injuries, Martinez will have a chance to carve out meaningful playing time right out of the gate.

  • Blake Martinez: Joins Carolina after workout

Martinez signed with the Panthers' practice squad Tuesday, Augusta Stone of the team's official site reports.

Martinez worked out with the team in late October and showed enough to earn an opportunity, as Carolina's linebacker corps is dealing with several injuries. The veteran linebacker appeared in four games with the Raiders last season, recording 20 tackles, before announcing a now-temporary retirement.

  • Blake Martinez: Works out with Carolina

Martinez worked out with the Panthers on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Martinez is seemingly attempting to make a return to the NFL after previously announcing his retirement last November. The 29-year-old logged 20 tackles (14 solo) in four games for the Raiders a season ago and could fill a glaring need at linebacker for the Panthers, as Shaq Thompson (lower leg) is out for the year and Frankie Luvu is dealing with a hip injury.

  • Blake Martinez: Hanging it up

Martinez announced via his personal Instagram on Thursday that he was retiring from the NFL, Rachel Gossen of the Raiders' official site reports.

Martinez joined Las Vegas' active roster on Oct. 7 after being released as part of the Giants' final roster cuts in late August. The 28-year-old said in his social media post that he was retiring in order to "focus on [his] family and future passions," thus finishing his career with 706 tackles (442 solo), 13 sacks, four interceptions, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries over seven seasons between the Packers, the Giants and the Raiders. Martinez missed the majority of the 2021 campaign after tearing his ACL in Week 3, and he recorded 20 tackles (14 solo) over four games this season. In his stead, expect Jayon Brown and Curtis Bolton to play increased roles as Denzel Perryman (hip/ribs) deals with numerous injuries.

  • Raiders' Blake Martinez: Game-high 11 stops Sunday

Martinez recorded 11 tackles (eight solo) during Sunday's 27-20 loss to the Jaguars.

Martinez compiled his most effective outing yet in a Raiders uniform, as he notched a game-high 11 tackles across 91 percent of the team's defensive snaps in Week 9 against Jacksonville. It looks as if the 28-year-old could continue playing heavy snaps when the Raiders host Indianapolis in Week 10.

  • Raiders' Blake Martinez: Signed to active roster

The Raiders signed Martinez to their active roster from the practice squad Friday, Levi Damien of USA Today reports.

Martinez was signed to the practice squad as insurance after Denzel Perryman suffered a concussion, and while Perryman is trending towards being available for Week 5, the Raiders will add the veteran Martinez as increased depth anyways. Martinez suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 3 last year, but he appears to be healthy after signing with Las Vegas. Before his devastating knee injury, Martinez had recorded at least 140 tackles in four straight campaigns.

  • Raiders' Blake Martinez: Joins Vegas

Martinez signed a contract with the Raiders on Monday, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.

Martinez will join the Raiders after suffering a season-ending torn ACL suffered in Week 3 last year. The middle linebacker was able to suit up this preseason and was expected to step back into a starting role for the Giants, but he was released ahead of the 2022 campaign. Now, Martinez should quickly step into a prominent role with Las Vegas after fellow middle linebacker Denzel Perryman suffered a concussion during Sunday's win over Denver.

  • Blake Martinez: Joins Vegas' practice squad

The Raiders officially signed Martinez to their practice squad Tuesday.

Jordan Schultz of TheScore.com had previously reported Monday that Martinez signed with Las Vegas, but the team won't immediately add the veteran linebacker to the 53-man roster. Instead, Martinez will reside on the practice squad for the time being, though he'll likely be the top candidate to be elevated to the roster if fellow linebacker Denzel Perryman (concussion) isn't able to play Week 5 against the Chiefs.
