Markus Wheaton: Let go by Philadelphia
The Eagles released Wheaton on Tuesday, Daniel Gallen of The Harrisburg Patriot-News reports.
Both Wheaton and Kamar Aiken were among the final receivers cut by the Eagles at the conclusion of the preseason, but Wheaton was re-signed a few days later after Philadelphia ruled out Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) and Mack Hollins (groin) for the regular-season opener. The 27-year-old logged just three snaps (two on offense) in the Week 1 win over the Falcons, with Aiken moving on to the active roster in his stead. Though he has a pair of 40-catch seasons on his resume, Wheaton has suited up in just 14 contests over the past three years, recording only seven receptions during that span. He could resurface in Philadelphia or with another team later in the season, but it's unlikely he would secure a major role in any squad's passing attack.

Eagles' Markus Wheaton: Returning to Philadelphia
Wheaton signed with the Eagles on Tuesday.
Wheaton was just released by the Eagles on Sunday as part of their final roster cuts, but with fellow wideout Mack Hollins (groin) ruled out for Thursday's opener against the Falcons, Wheaton was brought back to add some depth to the unit. With Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) also not in line to play Thursday, Wheaton could see a decent number of opportunities in the passing game, but once those two are back healthy, the wideout could find himself off the roster once again.

Markus Wheaton: Released by Philly
Wheaton was released by the Eagles on Sunday, Chris McPherson of the team's official site reports.
The 27-year-old has had a bit of a tumultuous career following his Pittsburgh days. There's no denying his skillset as a wideout in this league, but there's a degree of consistency that has been missing with Wheaton. The Eagles have one of the top wideout corps in the NFC, so Wheaton's release is by no means an indictment on his ability. Don't be surprised if another team takes a shot on Wheaton as the season inches closer.

Wheaton (hamstring) returned to practice Sunday, Dave Zangaro of NBC Sports reports.
Wheaton has missed an extended period of time with a strained hamstring but now returns to practice with two weeks remaining until the regular season. The veteran isn't a lock for a roster spot with the Eagles and will look to play in the preseason finale and show that he can contribute in the passing game. Shelton Gibson and Anthony Mahoungou may lose some snaps with Wheaton back in the picture.

Wheaton wasn't in uniform for Thursday's preseason opener either, so it appears he's again on the mend after missing a day of practice Monday before returning to the fold Tuesday for a practice without pads. With a 53-man roster spot up for grabs and Wheaton's spot on thin ice, he will likely aim to return to action in short order if his health allows it.

Eagles' Markus Wheaton: Reaches deal with Philadelphia
Wheaton signed a one-year contract with the Eagles on Wednesday, Zach Berman of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Despite the Bears' dearth of talent at receiver last season, Wheaton couldn't carve out much of a role in the passing game while also battling health issues. Wheaton finished his lone campaign in Chicago with just three receptions for 51 yards in 11 games before receiving his walking papers in March. It's no surprise that Wheaton was forced to settle for a one-year, prove-it deal in free agency, and there's no guarantee he'll earn a roster spot with the Super Bowl champions given his issues with staying on the field and his underwhelming production in 2017. Even if Wheaton is able to clinch a roster berth, he'll likely only serve as a depth wideout for the team and wouldn't be in line for consistent targets.

Markus Wheaton: Visiting Seattle
Wheaton is visiting the Seahawks on Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
The only 100-yard game of Wheaton's career was an outlier 201-yard performance during a game in Seattle back in Week 12 of 2015. He finished out that season with a handful of solid outings but has subsequently caught only seven passes on 26 targets in 14 games for Pittsburgh and Chicago the past two seasons. Seeking a speedy replacement for free-agent departee Paul Richardson, the Seahawks surely remember that game from 2015 and may be optimistic that Wheaton can recapture his best form if he stays healthy. Regardless of where he lands, the 27-year-old will need to reprove himself, likely while working on a contract that doesn't include much guaranteed money.
