No charges will be filed against DE Elvis Dumervil in the July 14 incident that resulted in his arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Miami.
"I've been confident all along," said Dumervil after Tuesday's practice. "I know I didn't do anything wrong. It was a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time."
The quick resolution to the arrest leaves the Broncos breathing a sigh of relief after worrying that the Pro Bowler could have faced a three-year mandatory minimum prison sentence, in addition to any punishment the league could have levied.
The NFL has the option to suspend players for incidents even without a courtroom conviction, but it seems unlikely that Dumervil would face any sanction given the quick decision. The Broncos aren't clear of legal issues, however; linebacker D.J. Williams faces a retrial this month on a DUI charge.
Dumervil had faced a hearing in Miami-Dade Court on Aug. 16 prior to receiving Tuesday's news.
What Dumervil will remember most of all isn't the three years of prison time he could have faced if convicted, but the phone call from jail to his mother.
"She was the first person I called; I wanted to make sure she didn't overreact or get too stressed. She doesn't take bad news too well," Dumervil said. "So making that phone call, more than anything, is what I remember about this whole situation."
