  • Derrick Rose: Brings ends to 16-year career

Rose announced Thursday via his personal Instagram account that he has retired from professional basketball.

Selected by the Bulls with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft, Rose immediately established himself as one of the game's top point guards upon entering the league. After claiming Rookie of the Year honors, Rose was named NBA MVP during his third season in 2010-11, becoming the youngest player in league history to win the award at 22 years old. Unfortunately for Rose, that 2010-11 campaign would prove to be his peak, with a torn ACL suffered during the 2012 playoffs and a meniscus injury suffered in November 2013 costing him nearly two full seasons and significantly altering the trajectory of his career. Rose never made another All-Star team after suffering the two major knee injuries, but the 35-year-old still turned in a productive 16-year career and was often a solid secondary scoring option across his stops with the Bulls, Knicks, Cavaliers, Timberwolves, Pistons and Grizzlies. Rose had been under contract with the Grizzlies heading into the 2024-25 season, but he requested his release earlier this week so that he could officially head into retirement.

  • Derrick Rose: Parting ways with Memphis

Rose (groin/back) was waived by the Grizzlies on Monday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Rose missed the end of the 2023-24 campaign due to back and groin injuries, and his playing days may be nearing an end. The 2011 MVP didn't receive any of his salary after being waived by the Grizzlies, so he won't impact Memphis' salary cap this season, per Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com.

  • Grizzlies' Derrick Rose: Expected to miss rest of season

Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins said Friday that Rose will likely miss the remainder of the 2023-24 campaign while he recovers from a low back injury in addition to a right groin injury, Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

After being diagnosed March 5 with low back and groin soreness, Rose was set to be re-evaluated in three weeks. The three-week period has now passed, and the Grizzlies seem to have opted to shut Rose down for the season, a decision that doesn't come as a surprise given Memphis' status as a non-playoff contender. Rose struggled to stay healthy all season and made just 24 appearances (seven starts), averaging 8.0 points, 3.3 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 16.6 minutes. Rose is under contract with the Grizzlies for one more season and is set to turn 36 years old in October.

  • Grizzlies' Derrick Rose: Set for multi-week absence

Rose will be re-evaluated in three weeks after being diagnosed with right osteitis pubis stemming from an injury suffered on Feb. 28 against Minnesota, Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.

Rose is dealing with the lingering soreness in his lower back and groin, which appears set to sideline him for Memphis' next nine games, at least. The veteran guard carries shutdown risk as well, especially if the Grizzlies prioritize maximizing minutes for recent two-way signee Jordan Goodwin.

  • Grizzlies' Derrick Rose: Won't play Saturday

Rose (back) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Trail Blazers.

  • Grizzlies' Derrick Rose: Not playing Friday

Rose (back) has been ruled out for Friday's game against the Trail Blazers.

Rose left Wednesday's 110-101 loss to the Timberwolves with back soreness and didn't return, and given his injury history, it's not surprising that he won't be available for this one. The Grizzlies are playing a back-to-back set against Portland on Friday and Saturday, and it remains to be seen if Rose will be available for the second half of that set.

  • Grizzlies' Derrick Rose: Doesn't return after early exit

Rose left Wednesday's 110-101 loss to the Timberwolves with back soreness and didn't return. He logged two points (1-2 FG) and an assist across six minutes.

Wednesday's game marked Rose's third straight appearance, a feat he hadn't accomplished since the middle of December. However, he was unable to finish the contest and will have a day to rest before the Grizzlies embark upon a home back-to-back Friday and Saturday against Portland. Expect Rose to miss at least one of those contests.
