Player Outlook
Selected by the Athletics with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of a high school in California, Tyler Soderstrom climbed through the minor leagues far more quickly than most young catchers and made his major-league debut just after the 2023 All-Star break at age 21. How much he'll actually catch over the course of his big-league career is an unsettled debate, but he should retain eligibility at fantasy baseball's shallowest position for at least a little while longer as he also works in at first base and DH. Oakland loves his bat, and it's easy to see why. Across his 268 total games on the farm, the now 22-year-old registered an .856 OPS with 62 home runs and 216 RBI, and he absolutely feasted on right-handed pitching as a fast-rising lefty-swinging slugger.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Keeps rolling Saturday

Soderstrom went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to the Twins on Saturday. Soderstrom squared up on a Bailey Ober offering in the second and sent it 419 feet to center for the Athletics' second and final run of the afternoon. The rookie has slugged five of his first six big-league homers in the last 12 games, a stretch where he's boasting a stellar 1.117 OPS and has averaged exactly one RBI per contest.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Drives in three Friday

Soderstrom went 2-for-2 with an RBI single, a two-run double, a walk and a run in a win over the Twins on Friday. Soderstrom's stellar night at the plate began with a first-inning RBI single that plated Abraham Toro (hamstring) and was followed up by a two-bagger in the fifth that drove home Miguel Andujar and Brent Rooker. The rookie has been on a tear at the plate since early June, producing a .314/.397/.588 slash line with six extra-base hits, 11 RBI and an acceptable 20.7 percent strikeout rate across the 58 plate appearances covering his last 15 games.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Blasts homer Sunday

Soderstrom went 4-for-8 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored as the Athletics were swept in Sunday's doubleheader versus the Twins. Soderstrom had three of his hits, including the homer, during the nightcap. He's hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games, going 13-for-38 (.342) in that span. The 22-year-old is up to a .250/.357/.464 slash line with five homers, 13 RBI, nine runs scored and three doubles over 31 contests. Soderstrom continues to see steady playing time at first base against right-handed pitchers, and he could push for closer to an everyday role if he continues to hit well.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Goes yard again

Soderstrom went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a walk in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Padres. Soderstrom has homered in back-to-back games, giving him three long balls this season. He's also hit safely in five of his last six contests, going 6-for-17 (.353) in that span. The 22-year-old had struggled to get anything going earlier in the season, but he's now at a .222/.347/.413 slash line with three homers, eight RBI and five runs scored over 75 plate appearances. He appears to have leapfrogged J.D. Davis for the starting role at first base, though Soderstrom would still have the advantage if it ultimately becomes a platoon situation.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Swats second homer

Soderstrom went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a loss to the Padres on Monday. Soderstrom gave Oakland an early lead with a solo homer in the second inning, but that was the only run the team ended up generating. The long ball was Soderstrom's first since his first game of the campaign, which took place May 8 against Texas. He's struggled to a .200 batting average with just six RBI over 71 plate appearances on the campaign, though his 14.1 percent walk rate has kept his OBP at a respectable .324.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Sitting second straight

Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mariners. Soderstrom appeared to have taken hold of a regular role at first base against right-handed pitching, but he's sitting Wednesday for the second straight game versus a righty (Logan Gilbert). J.D. Davis will receive another start at first base and bat sixth.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Not starting Thursday

Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Thursday's contest in Tampa Bay. Soderstrom has now started just two of the last eight games for the Athletics and is hitless across his last six contests, so the 22-year-old would seem to be in danger of a demotion. Aledmys Diaz will get the nod at first base for Oakland on Thursday.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Losing hold of regular role

Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. The lefty-hitting Soderstrom finds himself on the bench for the fourth time in five games, with three of his absences coming when the Athletics have faced right-handed starters. After slashing .211/.302/.368 since getting called up from Triple-A Las Vegas on May 8, Soderstrom appears to have lost hold of his regular role at first base.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Sitting for third straight game

Soderstrom isn't in the Athletics' lineup for Friday's game against the Astros. Friday will mark the third straight game Soderstrom has been left out of Oakland's starting lineup, though he has entered as a pinch hitter in each of the last two contests. J.D. Davis will get the nod at first base once again while Soderstrom sits.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Sitting against right-hander

Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rockies. Soderstrom had started each of the previous six games against right-handers, but he'll begin Thursday's contest on the bench as the Athletics take on righty Ryan Feltner. Soderstrom sports a .689 OPS and 42.1 percent strikeout rate in 11 contests with the big club this season. J.D. Davis will cover first base Thursday in Soderstrom's stead.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: On bench versus southpaw

Soderstrom is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game versus Colorado. Soderstrom started the previous three games but will sit Wednesday as lefty Austin Gomber pitches for the Rockies. J.D. Davis will handle first base and bat fifth.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Out of starting lineup versus lefty

Soderstrom is not in the starting lineup for Friday's matchup against the Royals. The lefty-hitting Soderstrom will start from the bench as the Athletics take on lefty Cole Ragans. The 22-year-old has started in six of Oakland's last eight games, though J.D. Davis will take the field at first base Friday.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Idle against lefty

Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. With lefty Framber Valdez on the hill for Houston, the lefty-hitting Soderstrom will retreat to the bench. Soderstrom appears to have settled into the strong side of a platoon at first base with the right-handed-hitting J.D. Davis, who will get the starting nod Wednesday.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Belts first 2024 homer

Soderstrom went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader split with the Rangers. Getting the start at first base in the nightcap and batting eighth in his MLB season debut, Soderstrom got hold of a cutter by Jack Leiter and drove it over the fence in left-center field in the fourth inning. Soderstrom's power is legit -- he has two 20-homer campaigns in the minors, and he'd clubbed seven long balls in 27 games for Triple-A Las Vegas prior to his promotion Wednesday -- but Oakland prefers Shea Langeliers' defense behind the plate, and the team's 1B/DH situation is crowded. Playing time could be hard for Soderstrom to come by, even if he does stick around on the big-league roster.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Mixed bag thus far in Vegas

Soderstrom owns a .148 average and .233 on-base percentage across his first 30 plate appearances with Triple-A Las Vegas, but he sports an impressive .519 slugging percentage in that sample as well. The final component of Soderstrom's slash line is the byproduct of having laced all four of his hits thus far for extra bases in the form of a double and three home runs. The early power is certainly encouraging, and Soderstrom's minuscule .063 BABIP over the small sample implies he's run into some bad luck when putting the ball in play early this minor-league season. Soderstrom's numbers should therefore be due for some improvement, considering this is the third consecutive year he'll have spent time at the Triple-A Level after logging 373 plate appearances with the Aviators over the last two minor-league campaigns.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Optioned to Triple-A

The Athletics optioned Soderstrom to Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday. Soderstrom got off to a slow start in spring training, and the struggles continued. The catcher posted a .370 OPS across 34 plate appearances in 14 games. At Triple-A Las Vegas in 2023, the 22-year-old had a .833 OPS. This move points to Carlos Perez opening the season as the backup catcher for Oakland.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Recalled from Las Vegas

Oakland recalled Soderstrom from Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday. Soderstrom gives the Athletics a third option at catcher as they expand their roster from 26 to 28. The 24-year-old entered the 2023 campaign as a consensus top-100 prospect but has slashed just .165/.237/.247 through his first 27 major-league games.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Riding pine Wednesday

Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Even after going 1-for-4 in Tuesday's 6-2 win, Soderstrom is still sitting on a .160 batting average through his first 83 plate appearances in the big leagues. Even though the 21-year-old has struggled with the jump from Triple-A Las Vegas to the majors, the Athletics don't yet seem ready to pull the plug on Soderstrom as a near-everyday player at either designated hitter, catcher or first base. He had started each of the last five games and 10 of the previous 11 contests.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Sitting against lefty

Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers. The lefty-hitting Soderstrom will ride the bench for the series finale while the Rangers bring southpaw Jordan Montgomery to the hill. With Soderstrom sitting out, Shea Langeliers will start at catcher and Jordan Diaz will serve as Oakland's designated hitter.

  • Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Belts first big-league homer

Soderstrom went 1-for-3 with a solo home run Thursday in a loss to the Dodgers. Though his eighth-inning solo shot didn't have much of an impact on the final score, it was certainly a big moment for Soderstrom since it was the first homer of his major-league career. In fact, it was the first extra-base hit of any sort for the rookie, who came into the contest with just eight singles over 47 plate appearances. Soderstrom has seen his playing time fluctuate but appears to be getting into a groove at the plate, as he's batting .300 (6-for-20) over his past six games.
