Player Outlook
A star is born. Corbin Carroll flashed tremendous potential as a late-season call-up in 2022 and then did nothing in 2023 to dissuade the notion that he is one of the brightest young players in the sport. He tallied 65 extra-base hits in 155 regular-season games, stole 54 bases in 59 attempts, and placed seventh among all major leaguers in runs scored (116) to help the Diamondbacks claim the final NL Wild Card spot and stage a run all the way to the World Series. The one legitimate knock against him is that he has a weak outfield arm, but fantasy managers have the luxury of simply ignoring that fact. At age 23 and absolutely dripping with category-spanning fantasy upside, Carroll is sure to be a first-round selection in every mixed-league draft this spring. He could even regularly come off the board within the first five picks. That eight-year, $111 million contract extension he signed with Arizona last March already looks incredibly team-friendly and gives the D-backs some leeway to build an even better supporting cast around him.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Idle versus lefty

Carroll is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Phillies, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. The lefty-hitting Carroll will begin Sunday's game in the dugout with Philadelphia sending southpaw Cristopher Sanchez to the mound. Carroll is slashing .257/.373/.386 with 18 runs and five RBI over 70 at-bats in June. Jake McCarthy will start Sunday's game in center field and bat sixth.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Stolen base, run in win

Carroll went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 5-4 win over the Phillies. He was also hit by a pitch. Carroll walked and stole a base ahead of Gabriel Moreno's home run in the third inning. The stolen base was Carroll's team-leading 14th, which is tied for 20th in MLB. As Carroll's reached base more frequently in the last two weeks, he's picked up his running pace. He's gotten on base at a .443 clip over the last 14 games and has attempted six steals during that stretch.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Day off versus left-hander

Carroll is absent from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals. Carroll has finally heated up at the dish in reaching base 25 times while adding four stolen bases over his last 12 contests. He'll get some rest Thursday, however, as the Nationals send tough left-hander MacKenzie Gore to the hill. Additionally, Carroll recently overcame a left side injury, so the Diamondbacks were presumably keen on giving him some maintenance. Jake McCarthy will play center field in Thursday's series finale.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Moves up order against lefty

Carroll batted second and went 1-for-4 with a double in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to the Nationals. Carroll had been dropped to the lower third of the order against left-handers a couple of weeks ago, but he was moved back to the top third Wednesday. A 12-game stretch during which he slashed .340/.446/.511 may have influenced manager Torey Lovullo's decision to get Carroll higher in the order.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Active in return

Carroll went 2-for-3 with two walks, a triple, a stolen base and a caught stealing in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Nationals. Carroll was removed from Sunday's game with discomfort in his left side, but he was ready to go Tuesday after an MRI came back clean. He led off the game with a walk, stole second base, then trotted in on Ketel Marte's home run. Carroll later tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year's season-opening slump has started to lift; he's 16-for-47 (.340) with four doubles, two triples, nine walks, four steals and 16 runs scored over the last 12 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: MRI returns clean

Carroll will rejoin the Diamondbacks in Washington for the start of their series against the Nationals on Tuesday after he underwent an MRI on Monday that revealed no significant damage to his left side, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. The Diamondbacks ordered up the MRI for Carroll after he experienced a "pull feeling" while making a throw in the seventh inning of Sunday's 12-5 win over the White Sox. He left the game shortly thereafter, though he was in positive spirits when describing his injury after the game. The MRI seems to have validated Carroll's optimism, and though he looks set to avoid a stint on the injured list and will rejoin the team, the Diamondbacks could still hold him out of the lineup for Tuesday's series opener if he's still dealing with some discomfort. Fantasy managers in leagues with weekly lineup decisions will likely want to keep close tabs on Carroll's status leading up to the 6:45 p.m. ET start time of Tuesday's contest.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Set for MRI on Monday

Carroll (side) will undergo an MRI in Phoenix on Monday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports. Carroll left Sunday's 12-5 win over the White Sox in the seventh inning with left side discomfort, and he will now require some additional imaging. The Diamondbacks will begin a three-game series on the road against the Nationals on Tuesday, and with Carroll staying in Arizona for the MRI on Monday, it's possible that he's forced to miss at least one contest. In his absence, Randal Grichuk would stand to see an increased role in the outfield.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: On base four times Tuesday

Carroll went 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's 9-4 win over the Angels. Carroll began his night with an RBI triple in the second and later came around to score. He then doubled his next time up in the fourth and would walk and cross home once more in the fifth. Carroll's been dialed in at the plate as of late. Over his last five games, he's tallied nine hits and four walks while not striking out a single time. The mini surge has lifted his slash line to .213/.300/.309 with 15 extra-base hits, 21 RBI, 35 runs and a 29:52 BB:K over 283 plate appearances.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Nabs 10th steal

Carroll went 3-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored in Thursday's 4-3 win over the Padres. Carroll's three-hit effort got his batting average over .200 for the first time since May 12. He's opened June by going 5-for-21 (.238) over six contests, and his steal Thursday was his first since May 25. The outfielder is slashing .201/.284/.291 with two home runs, 10 thefts, 20 RBI, 30 runs scored, seven doubles and four triples over 61 games in a so-far disappointing sophomore campaign.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Remains leadoff against righties

Carroll batted leadoff and went 1-for-5 with a run scored in Wednesday's 9-3 loss to the Giants. Carroll was moved down to the eighth in the order the last two games, but that is an adjustment against left-handers only. Last year's NL Rookie of the Year continues to struggle overall, slashing .192/.278/.279 through 259 plate appearances. There are indicators to explain his issues -- fewer barrels and an increase in pop-up rate jump out -- but he's retained good plate discipline and luck appears to be a factor. Carroll's .237 BABIP ranks 142nd among 154 qualified hitters in MLB.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Drops to eighth in batting order

Carroll is starting in center field and batting eighth Monday night against the Giants, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports. Carroll's struggles at the dish have continued, as he's slashing .205/.289/.333 over his last 10 contests. Skipper Torey Lovullo noted that he'll likely bump Carroll down in the order against lefties moving forward, per Weiner. This change clears the way for Gabriel Moreno to move into the No. 2 spot in the order Monday evening.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Triples, scores in loss

Carroll went 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple and a run scored in Sunday's 3-1 loss to Miami. Arizona's offense couldn't get anything going until Carroll tripled and scored in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was the outfielder's fourth triple of the season, all coming within the last eight games. However, there's been little to celebrate for Carroll, whose .188 average and .096 ISO are miles below what they were in 2023.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Hitless but makes impact

Carroll went 0-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Marlins. Carroll managed to make an impact without a hit. He led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk then stole a base before scoring the club's first run. An inning later, his sacrifice fly plated what turned out to be the winning run. The move back up to the top of the order hasn't shaken Carroll out of a season-opening slump. He was batting .203 as of May 5, when manager Torey Lovullo moved him back into the familiar leadoff role. Seventeen games later, Carroll's average has dipped to .186.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Delivers winning run

Carroll went 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Reds. Carroll delivered the go-ahead run on a two-out single in the top of the eighth inning, a half inning after the Reds plated three runs to tie the game. The outfielder returned to the top of the order this week after a season-opening slump dropped him to the lower third in late April. He's worked through the slow start, which he attributed to a flat swing, per Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Carroll has a pop-up rate of 15.2 percent on the season, more than double than what it was in 2023 (7.3 percent).

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Moves up to leadoff spot Tuesday

Carroll will start in center field and bat leadoff in Tuesday's game in Cincinnati. It's the first time since April 22 that Carroll has hit higher than seventh. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year did have two base knocks and two RBI in Monday's game, his first multi-hit effort since April 19.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Breaks RBI drought

Carroll went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 11-4 win over San Diego. Carroll delivered a two-run single as part of Arizona's four-run first inning, snapping a 16-game drought without an RBI. He's hit in five of the last six games (6-for-22), which is a positive sign for the slumping outfielder, but Carroll's bat still lacks impact. Through 33 games, he has seven RBI, four extra-base hits and a .250 slugging percentage.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Day off against left-hander

Carroll is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game in St. Louis. Left-hander Steven Matz is toeing the rubber for the Cardinals, so it's not a bad time to give the left-batting Carroll a day off as he goes through a season-opening slump. Carroll is slashing just .175/.298/.175 over his last 10 games. Jake McCarthy will play center field and Randal Grichuk will be in right Tuesday.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Steals bag in loss

Carroll went 2-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 9-6 loss to St. Louis. Carroll extended a hit streak to six games and swiped his fourth bag of the season. He leads the Diamondbacks in steals, but it's been a slow start to the season for Carroll, who still carries just a .684 OPS, so his hit streak is a welcome sign. He's mired in the lower percentile of average exit velocity (82.3 mph) and is chasing more than ever (32.3 percent).

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Leadoff homer in win

Carroll went 1-for-4 with a walk and a solo home run in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Rockies. Carroll, who filled in as the leadoff batter for a resting Ketel Marte, homered on the second pitch of the game, sending a slider on the outside corner the other way. It was the first home run of the season for Carroll, who's wielded a quiet bat out of the gate -- he entered with a .590 OPS and one RBI through 10 games.

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Two hits, steal in loss

Carroll went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in Monday's 7-5 loss to Colorado. Carroll stole his third bag (caught twice) and logged his third multi-hit game of the season. He's batting just .225 with has one extra-base and one RBI through the season's first 10 games.
