  • Nationals' Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Placed on Triple-A IL

Triple-A Rochester placed Ogasawara on its 7-day injured list Thursday with an oblique injury, Spencer Nusbaum of The Washington Post reports.

Ogasawara retains a spot on the Nationals' 40-man roster after signing a two-year, $3.5 million deal in January, but he was unable to win a spot in the Opening Day rotation and is still waiting to make his MLB debut. He supplied a 4.80 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 12:4 K:BB over 15 innings through his first three starts with Rochester before going down with the oblique injury.

  • Nationals' Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Sent to Rochester

The Nationals optioned Ogasawara to Triple-A Rochester on Friday.

Ogasawara's transition from Japan to the U.S. hasn't gone as well as he probably had hoped. In five Grapefruit League games, the 27-year-old lefty allowed 19 runs (15 earned) in 12 innings while striking out 10 batters and walking eight. He'll now head to the minors as a result of his rough start, and it may be a while before he's ready to face MLB hitters.

  • Nationals' Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Knocked around in spring start

Ogasawara took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two over 3.2 innings Monday during a Cactus League loss to the Marlins.

Ogasawara posted his worst outing of the spring against a Miami offense that refused to let up, as the club scored on the southpaw in each of the first four innings. This wasn't an ideal showing for the 27-year-old, who is doing everything he can in camp to prove that he belongs in Washington's rotation.

  • Nationals' Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Tosses bullpen Friday

Ogasawara threw 40 pitches in a bullpen session Friday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports.

The 27-year-old left-hander didn't even fly in from Japan until Wednesday night, but Ogasawara had already been throwing with an MLB ball prior to his arrival in camp and may actually be a little ahead of the Nationals' other pitchers. While he doesn't have overpowering stuff or the strikeout upside to be worth a late-round dart throw in most fantasy formats, Ogasawara will be given every opportunity to win a spot in a Nationals' rotation that has plenty of arms in the mix but little established depth -- only MacKenzie Gore and Jake Irvin made 30-plus starts in the majors last year among the Nats' starting pitching options. Over 144.1 innings for the Chunichi Dragons in 2024, Ogasawara posted a 3.12 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 82:22 K:BB.

  • Nationals' Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Two-year contract with Washington

The Nationals signed Ogasawara to a two-year contract Friday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

The financial details of the deal are not yet known. Ogasawara, 27, posted a 3.12 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 82:22 K:BB over 144.1 innings in his most recent of nine seasons with the Chunichi Dragons in Japan. The left-hander figures to be given an opportunity to compete for a spot in the Nationals' rotation but could ultimately settle into a relief role.

  • Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Posted for MLB teams

The Chunichi Dragons of Nippon Professional Baseball have posted Ogasawara for major-league teams, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports.

Ogasawara's posting had been viewed as imminent, and now the clock has officially begun on a 45-day window for the left-hander to reach a deal with a big-league club. The 27-year-old generated a 3.12 ERA and 3.7 percent walk rate in 2024 with the Dragons, although he also had a modest 13.6 percent strikeout rate.

  • Shinnosuke Ogasawara: Will be posted by NPB team

The Chunichi Dragons of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball have granted Ogasawara's request to be posted for major-league teams this offseason, Yahoo Japan reports.

Ogasawara, 27, held a 3.12 ERA and microscopic 3.7 percent walk rate in 2024 with the Dragons, although that also came with just a 13.6 percent strikeout rate. The left-hander has missed more bats in the past and is a relatively young, so perhaps he could land a multi-year contract this offseason. Once the posting becomes official, Ogasawara would have 45 days to reach a deal with a major-league club.
