• Mets' Tylor Megill: Could start second game of season

  Megill is expected to start the second game of the Mets' season-opening series in Houston, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. That would line the right-hander up to face the Astros on March 28 after Clay Holmes gets the nod Opening Day, with Griffin Canning, David Peterson and Kodai Senga following in the rotation. Megill has looked good this spring, posting a 13:2 K:BB over 11.2 innings, and he should get a few turns through the rotation to establish himself as a reliable option with Sean Manaea (oblique) not set to return until at least mid-April, and Frankie Montas (lat) on the shelf into May.

• Mets' Tylor Megill: Will stretch out this spring

  Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Megill will be stretched out as a starting pitcher this spring, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The Mets' current plan is to open the season with a six-man rotation, and Megill will be in the mix for one of those last two spots along with David Peterson, Griffin Canning and Paul Blackburn (back). Megill could eventually shift to a relief role, although he does have minor-league options left; therefore, the righty could also open the season in the Triple-A Syracuse rotation.

The New York right-hander posted his second consecutive quality start and third overall with this 94-pitch performance. Megill allowed just one extra-base hit -- a double by Dylan Crews in the second -- working around an unearned run in third en route to his 21st career win. The hard-throwing 29-year-old averaged 96.3 mph on his fastball, up 0.7 mph from his normal, and has now pitched to a 2.76 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB across 29.1 innings in the second half. Megill looks to continue his impressive work against the division-leading Phillies in next start, scheduled for this weekend.

  Megill is expected to make his next start Tuesday against the Nationals at Citi Field, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Though Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Megill would stick in the rotation after striking out nine over six shutout innings Monday against the Blue Jays, the right-hander will have to wait more than a week to make his next turn. While Megill would be on normal rest for Saturday's game in Philadelphia or five days' rest for Sunday's series finale, the Mets are instead realigning their rotation to have Luis Severino and David Peterson start those respective games. The shuffling will allow the team's top pitcher, Sean Manaea, to start every five days down the stretch, as the Mets push for a wild-card spot. Manaea will take the hill for Monday's series opener versus the Nationals and will be followed by Megill and Jose Quintana, on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Manaea and Megill will both be on track for two-start weeks, with the two lining up for starts in next weekend's home series versus the Phillies.

The Mets handed the right-hander a four-run lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Jesse Winker grand slam, but he nearly squandered it in the third. When Megill then gave up a leadoff single to begin the fifth, manager Carlos Mendoza went to his bullpen. Making his first big-league start since June 29, Megill looked like he was headed for a pitchers' duel with rookie Spencer Schwellenbach until Marcell Ozuna and Matt Olson clubbed back-to-back solo shots in the fourth inning. Eddie Rosario would then help chase Megill from the game with a third solo blast to lead off the seventh. With Kodai Senga (calf) lost for the season and Christian Scott (elbow) lacking a clear return date, Megill will likely get an extended run in the rotation unless the Mets bring in help at the trade deadline. The right-hander hasn't made a strong case for the job however, posting a 5.20 ERA and 1.40 WHIP through nine MLB starts this season.

After exiting in his season debut March 31 with a right shoulder strain and landing on the IL, Megill is finally ready to make his second start with the Mets nearly seven weeks later. According to Puma, Megill said the injury was caused by the lower arm slot he used on his curveball, but the right-hander reported no issues with throwing his breaking pitches during his four-start minor-league rehab assignment. Megill most recently tossed 5.1 shutout innings and 74 pitches in his final rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, so he's not expected to be under any major workload restrictions as he steps back into the big-league rotation.

Over four rehab appearances, Megill has an eye-popping 23:1 K:BB over 14 innings while allowing just one run. There's no clear vacancy in the big-league rotation at the moment with Christian Scott getting promoted from Triple-A earlier this month, but the Mets could go with a six-man rotation in the short term, as they don't get a day off until May 23. If he stays on turn, Megill would get activated from the 15-day injured list Friday for a road start against the Marlins.

However, whether he'll go back into the Mets rotation or remain at Syracuse hasn't yet been determined.
