Ranger Suarez was one of the stars of the early part of last season, recording a 1.75 ERA and 0.89 WHIP through his first 15 starts. He rode a bit of good luck, but his strikeout rate was up (26.8%), his walk rate was down (5.4%) and his ERA estimators (2.70 FIP, 2.84 xFIP) were excellent. But what looked like a breakout in Suarez's age-28 season was not to last. He slumped to a 6.17 ERA in 12 starts the rest of the way, struggling on either side of a one-month absence due to lower-back soreness. That ERA wasn't necessarily a fair reflection of his performance, but his 4.42 FIP and 3.93 xFIP down the stretch were a far cry from his early-season success as his K% (18.4) and BB% (8.1) took big steps back. Suarez's good stretch was longer than his bad stretch, resulting in year-end numbers which are stronger than we're used to seeing from him, but the late-season swoon pushes back against the idea that he's anything more than the groundball-heavy innings-eater he's been for years.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Sharp in first spring appearance

    Suarez hurled two scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League appearance against the Yankees, allowing one hit while striking out two. It was the first appearance of the spring for Suarez, who looked sharp in two frames of relief. The 29-year-old left-hander was a first-time All-Star in 2024 on the strength of a 1.83 ERA over his first 16 starts of the campaign, but he limped to the finish line with a 6.54 ERA across his last 11 regular-season starts. The poor second half has rendered Suarez more of a late-round draft selection in fantasy leagues, but he's in line to carry plenty of streaming appeal in 2025 as long as he remains a starter for a Phillies club that should offer plenty of run support.

  • Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Gets $8.8 million from Philadelphia

    The Phillies and Suarez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $8.8 million contract Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. It was the third and final year of arbitration eligibility for Suarez. The veteran left-hander had a 2.76 ERA in the first half but just a 5.65 ERA in eight starts during due to a back injury. Suarez entered the offseason healthy and will be heading into his walk year in 2025.

The southpaw exited the mound after 91 pitches (57 strikes) with the score tied 2-2, and both New York runs came on second-inning solo shots by Francisco Alvarez and Luisangel Acuna. Suarez hasn't completed six innings in a start since the All-Star break, and his last quality start came back on June 25. In six starts since returning from back trouble in late August, he's posted a 4.30 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB through 29.1 innings. He lines up to make his last start of the regular season on the road next weekend against the Nationals, but with the Phillies having clinched the NL East, they could shuffle things around to set up their postseason rotation.

The 12 hits given up by Suarez are a new season high. The left-hander's been in a rut of late -- he's failed to make it through six innings in seven of his last eight starts, posting a 6.02 ERA in that span. Overall, Suarez is 12-6 on the season with a 3.05 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 134:33 K:BB across 24 starts (138.2 innings). He'll look to get back on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week in Milwaukee.

Suarez didn't allow a baserunner to get past second base as he tossed his first outing of at least five innings with no runs allowed since mid-May. While he maintains an ERA of 2.90 with a 1.07 WHIP on the season, the 29-year-old lefty had struggled over his previous six starts with a 6.90 ERA and 1.60 WHIP across 30 innings. It was the 12th win of the season for Suarez, good for a tie for 11th in all of baseball, but just his third win since the calendar turned to June. He will look to continue to round back into form as the Phillies head toward the playoffs, with his next start scheduled to take place at home against the Rays.

Suarez threw two scoreless frames before Atlanta plated two runs in each of the third and fourth innings. He served up back-to-back homers to Orlando Arcia and Sean Murphy in the third. It was just the second time this year that Suarez gave up multiple home runs in an outing and he's allowed just 11 through 128.1 innings this season. Thomson said that Suarez tossed a "touch-and-feel" bullpen session Sunday in Arizona, which followed a 36-pitch simulated game this past Thursday.
