• Reds' Andrew Abbott: Makes spring debut

  Abbott allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two over three innings in Monday's Cactus League start against the Guardians. Results weren't important for Abbott, who was behind other starter candidates due to a shoulder issue that first cropped up at the end of the 2024 regular season and persisted over the winter. He made his Cactus League debut and was pleased with the 48-pitch effort, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The left-hander felt he was locating all of his pitches and getting three up-and-downs was a positive. The Reds would like Abbott to able to work five innings in order to feel comfortable inserting him into the rotation to start the regular season. Abbott will have one more opportunity to start during Cactus League play. Cincinnati does not need a fifth starter until April 5, which would give Abbott time for another session against minor leaguers or in a simulated game. If Abbott is not ready to go by then, Graham Ashcraft or Carson Spiers would fill in.

  Abbott appears to be the favorite to win the Reds' fifth starter job, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. The southpaw has yet to in a major-league spring training game this season, but the Reds won't need a fifth starter right away so Abbott's incumbency advantage still weighs heavily. That said, his edge is pretty precarious. "If there's a hiccup -- even not just him but weather-wise -- it could derail that first day," manager Terry Francona said. Graham Ashcraft and Carson Spiers are also still vying for the job.

• Reds' Andrew Abbott: Completes first live session of camp

  Abbott (shoulder) expressed optimism Sunday that he'll be ready for Opening Day after he recently tossed his first live batting practice session of the spring, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "Big step, big checkmark," Abbott said. "I feel really confident where we are." Just two days earlier, manager Terry Francona suggested that Abbott's availability for Opening Day was more of a question mark, but the southpaw's ability to face hitters is a big step in a positive direction. Abbott is likely to throw live BP sessions on at least a couple more occasions before the Reds include him in the Cactus League pitching schedule. He should still have enough time to get stretched out for starting duty before the Reds open their season March 27, but any minor snags in the buildup process would likely make him a candidate for a stint on the injured list.

Abbott was originally listed as the probable pitcher for Friday's game, but the Reds have since named Buck Farmer as the official starter. Farmer hasn't completed more than two innings in any appearance this season, so he'll presumably be in store for an abbreviated outing before Abbott likely enters the game and covers several frames.

• Reds' Andrew Abbott: Saddled with 10th loss

  Abbott (10-10) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Royals. He struck out four. Abbott didn't pitch particularly poorly but was mainly done in by the ninth spot in the order, with Dairon Blanco leading off the third with a bunt single and a stolen base that eventually led to the initial run, then a homer by Blanco in the fifth that pushed the deficit to three. An additional run scored on a sac fly, and Abbott's outing was over after five innings. Sunday marked the eighth consecutive outing for Abbott in which he's alternated allowing two runs or less followed immediately by four runs or more. It was also his fourth loss in five decisions after winning eight of his previous 10. If the trend holds, Abbott would notch a quality start during his next outing, and the matchup seems to fall in line with that possibility as he's next slated for a road matchup against the punchless Pirates.

  Abbott (10-9) earned the win Monday, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over 6.2 innings against the Cardinals. He struck out six. Abbott rebounded from allowing three homers in his last start to shut down the Cardinals, with a Nolan Arenado run-scoring single in the third representing the lone blemish against him. Abbott was on track to complete seven innings while allowing one run or fewer for the fifth time this season, but a two-out error by Elly De La Cruz extended the inning and Abbott was pulled after tossing 93 pitches. The 25-year-old lefty has now tossed a career-high 133 innings while holding a 3.59 ERA and 1.29 WHIP with 110 strikeouts. He's next scheduled for a home matchup against the Royals.

  Abbott (9-8) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.1 innings Friday, striking out eight and taking a loss against the Giants. Abbott was tagged with a pair of runs in the second inning, including a solo shot by Casey Schmitt, and the lefty was on the opposite end of Blake Snell's no-hitter in this one. Abbott needed 90 pitches to get through 4.1 frames and forced 13 whiffs. He failed to complete at least five innings for the third time in his last four starts, and he's posted a 5.40 ERA while going 0-2 during that stretch. For the season, Abbott owns a 3.41 ERA with a 97:46 K:BB through 22 starts. He's currently lined up for a start in Miami next week.

The southpaw fired 60 of 88 pitches for strikes but was getting too much of the plate, as six of the eight hits off him went for extra bases including back-to-back homers in the fifth inning by Alex Jackson and Yandy Diaz. Abbott has been erratic in July -- three of his five trips to the mound resulted in quality starts in which he allowed just one total run, but he got torched for nine runs in 7.1 innings in the other two outings. He'll take a 3.38 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 89:45 K:BB through 117 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Giants.

After posting a 3.87 ERA in 21 starts as a rookie, Abbott has taken a sizable step forward in Year 2, tallying a 3.39 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 19 starts and 106.1 innings. He's expected to make his next appearance against the Rays in Tampa Bay next weekend.

The southpaw allowed only one extra-base hit (a double) and didn't yield a run while he was in the game, as the only score charged to his ledger came after he departed with one out in the seventh inning. Through 17 starts, Abbott is up to eight wins, which is as many as he logged across 21 outings as a rookie last year. He's improved upon his ratios with a 3.28 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, though his 6.9 K/9 is a dramatic drop-off from his 9.9 K/9 last year.

The 25-year-old lefty hasn't had consistent swing-and-miss stuff this year -- he hasn't fanned more than six batters in an outing since May 4 -- and continues to have trouble keeping the ball in the park, as both runs against him Friday came on solo shots, but he's been making it all work so far in 2024. Abbott will take a 3.40 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 70:26 K:BB through 84.2 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come at home next week against the Pirates.

Abbott navigated around a stream of baserunners to keep the Brewers off the scoreboard for four frames, but he put himself in quick danger by walking the first two batters in the fifth. That came back to hurt him in a big way when Joey Ortiz hit a changeup for a three-run homer, accounting for all the runs Abbott surrendered in the outing. It was the southpaw's second straight start of five frames after he went at least six innings in four consecutive outings between May 15 and June 3. Abbott was efficient for most of the afternoon, with the exception of the four-seamers he left out over the plate for Cal Raleigh in the second inning and Mitch Garver in the sixth, both of which would end up in the outfield stands. The young lefty hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his first four starts to open the season and actually fanned a season-high six batters Wednesday, though the two home runs he surrendered also marked a season high. Furthermore, Abbott has now gone at least six innings in each of his last two starts and carries a clean 2.70 ERA following the loss.
