Player Outlook
DL Hall was expected to be a major rotation piece for Milwaukee in 2024 after being acquired from Baltimore in the Corbin Burnes trade, but he allowed 14 earned runs in four starts before going down with a knee injury. He had a lengthy rehab assignment at Triple-A and returned there after being activated from the injured list. Hall rejoined the Brewers during the stretch run and primarily pitched in relief and had a 3.68 ERA and .210 batting average allowed in his final eight outings. His average fastball velocity of 93.4 mph was down over two ticks from 2023, and control continues to be an issue with a 4.4 BB/9. Hall should once again get a chance to secure a spot in Milwaukee's starting rotation during spring training, but a return to the bullpen wouldn't be surprising given his inconsistency.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Goes on 60-day injured list

The Brewers placed Hall (lat) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for Jose Quintana, whose signing was officially announced Wednesday. Hall entered Brewers camp with a left lat strain, and while he's expected to resume playing catch by the end of this week, it's going to be a slow build-up process for the left-hander. He won't be eligible to return until late May.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Not yet throwing

Hall (lat) said Friday he hopes to be cleared to start playing catch next week, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Hall suffering a lat strain earlier in February and appears to be nearing the end of his shutdown period. The left-hander will need to resume throwing soon to have a chance of being fully built up by Opening Day. Any additional delays could mean Hall begins the campaign on the IL.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Recovering from lat strain

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Hall is recovering from a lat strain and won't throw for two weeks before being re-evaluated, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Hall had been expected to compete for a rotation spot in spring training after he worked out of the bullpen toward the end of his first season in Milwaukee, but the lat injury looks as though it could foil those plans. Even if the southpaw is cleared to resume throwing by the end of February, he would likely need at least a few weeks to get stretched out for starting duty before the season gets underway March 27. With that in mind, a relief role may represent Hall's clearest path to making the Opening Day roster, if he doesn't instead require a stint on the injured list.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Shifts back to bullpen

Hall made appearances out of the bullpen in Friday's 7-4 loss to the Diamondbacks and in Sunday's 10-9 win in the series finale with Arizona, giving up four earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four in 3.1 innings between the two outings. Hall made a spot start last Sunday -- also against the Diamondbacks -- but shifted back to the bullpen while the Brewers scaled back to a five-man rotation. The southpaw could be a candidate to make another spot start during the final week of the regular season if the Brewers' postseason seeding is solidified and the team wants to prioritize ordering its rotation for the playoffs.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Roughed up in short start

Hall did not factor into the decision during Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four in three innings. Four singles in the first inning led to two runs for the Diamondbacks. They would score three more in the third with just one hit after Hall loaded the bases and Pavin Smith cleared them with a double. It was a step backwards for Hall, who was working on 12.2 scoreless innings across his last three appearances coming into Sunday. He's shown upside at times but owns a 4.91 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 38:20 K:BB in 36.2 innings. It's possible he gets another start, but he'll likely return to a relief role for now.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Returned to Nashville

The Brewers returned Hall to Triple-A Nashville after Friday's doubleheader versus the Reds, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Hall turned in what was by far his best start of the season during the Brewers' 14-0 victory in the nightcap of the doubleheader, claiming the win while making it through seven innings without allowing a run and tallying five strikeouts. However, since he was designated as the 27th man for the twin bill, he'll have to at least temporarily head back to the minors. The 25-year-old southpaw could return to Milwaukee to boost its pitching depth once rosters expand Sunday.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Added ahead of spot start

The Brewers recalled Hall from Triple-A Nashville on Friday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Hall is the designated 27th man for Friday's doubleheader against the Reds and will start the second game. The left-hander made a spot start earlier this month -- his first with the Brewers since April -- and struck out nine while yielding three runs (one earned) over 4.2 innings. Hall is likely to be sent back down immediately following the double dip.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Sent back to minors

The Brewers optioned Hall to Triple-A Nashville on Monday. Hall had some good moments in his return from the 60-day injured list Sunday, as he struck out a career-high nine batters while allowing three runs over 4.2 innings in a spot start against the Reds. However, the Brewers will stick with a five-man rotation moving forward, so Hall will head back to Nashville and stay stretched out while he waits for a starting spot to open up.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Records career-high nine Ks

Hall struck out nine and didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Reds while allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks. Hall made his first big-league appearance since going on the shelf in late April with a sprained left knee and came out firing. Through three scoreless innings, Hall had punched out six batters, but he got a little wild in the fourth frame. He allowed Spencer Steer to steal a base on a wild pitch, walked Stuart Fairchild on six pitches and hit TJ Friedl with a pitch as part of a two-run inning for Cincinnati. He bounced back by retiring the first two batters of the fifth frame but was yanked after surrendering a solo home run to Tyler Stephenson and issuing a walk to Steer. The Brewers haven't clarified what Hall's role will look like moving forward, as the club already has five healthy starting pitchers and would have to expand the rotation to six men to open up a regular spot for him. The left-hander could be a candidate to serve in a multi-inning relief role if the Brewers opt not to make him a fixture in the rotation, and he also has minor-league options remaining if the organization prefers to have him stay on a starter's schedule at Triple-A Nashville.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Activated, starting Sunday

The Brewers reinstated Hall (knee) from the 60-day injured list Sunday. He'll start in Milwaukee's series finale with Cincinnati. Milwaukee already has five healthy starters, so unless manager Pat Murphy plans to expand the rotation to six men, Hall could be headed to the bullpen following Sunday's outing, which will be his first with the big club since April 20. Before landing on the IL due to a left knee sprain, Hall's spot in the rotation may have already been on thin ice, as he submitted a 7.71 ERA and 2.27 WHIP across 16.1 innings over his four starts with the big club this season. The left-hander displayed better form over the final three outings of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville, logging a 2.77 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB across 13 innings. Hall topped out at five innings and 76 pitches during his rehab assignment, so he shouldn't be operating under any significant workload restrictions Sunday.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Resuming rehab assignment

Hall (knee/forearm) will head to Triple-A Nashville on Sunday to resume his rehab assignment, Sophia Minnaert of Bally Sports Wisconsin reports. While it's unclear if Hall is scheduled to pitch Sunday in Nashville's game against Norfolk, the right-hander at least isn't being shut down from throwing any longer after his rehab assignment was extended when he was hit in the left forearm by a comebacker in his last outing July 9. Though Hall has yet to cover more than three innings in any of his nine outings between his first two separate minor-league rehab assignments, general manager Matt Arnold said last Sunday that the southpaw will get stretched back out to start as he resumes pitching with Nashville. Hall had previously made all four of his appearances with Milwaukee as a starter before landing on the injured list April 21 with a left knee sprain.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Will get stretched out in minors

Brewers general manager Matt Arnold said Sunday that Hall (knee/forearm) will continue to get stretched out for starting duty once he resumes his rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Hall has had his rehab assignment at Nashville shut down on two occasions, with the latest being the result of a bruised left forearm suffered when he was struck by a line drive Tuesday. Though Hall avoided structural damage to his pitching arm, he remains shut down from throwing but should be able to resume ramping up within a few days. Hall could still be a week or more away from resuming his assignment, however, which makes it unlikely that he'll be ready to return from the 60-day injured list before the end of July. Hall had previously covered between two and three innings in his last four rehab starts with Nashville while maxing out at 62 pitches.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Rehab extended

Hall (knee) didn't suffer a fracture after getting hit in the forearm by a comebacker Tuesday during his rehab outing with Triple-A Nashville, but he'll be shut down from throwing for 3-to-10 days, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Tuesday was originally expected to be Hall's final rehab outing, but his stay in Nashville will once again be extended while he recovers from the forearm injury. The Brewers haven't yet specified a new target date for Hall's return to Milwaukee, though a timeline may emerge once he's cleared to resume throwing.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Needs another rehab outing

Hall (knee) will make one more rehab start with Triple-A Nashville, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Hall's latest rehab start in Triple-A was cut short after three innings due to a rain delay, preventing him reaching his target number of innings. He'll remain in the minors for another turn through the rotation as a result, lowering his chances of rejoining the Brewers ahead of the All-Star break. It remains unclear whether the 25-year-old southpaw will be added to Milwaukee's rotation or head to the bullpen once he returns.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Completes rehab, role still TBD

Hall (knee) made what is expected to be his final rehab start for Triple-A Nashville on Thursday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. In his sixth and likely final appearance with Nashville since resuming a rehab assignment in mid-June, Hall worked three innings -- matching his total from his previous outing -- and allowed three unearned runs on three hits and three walks. While Hall still has a chance to make it as a starting pitcher, his usage on the farm suggests he won't work as a traditional starter upon his return this season. If he slots into a bulk-relief role, the lefty would have more fantasy appeal than he would if he were to be deployed as an opening pitcher in front of a bulk reliever.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Completes third rehab outing

Hall (knee) struck out one and allowed one hit and two walks over 1.1 innings in his latest rehab outing Thursday with Triple-A Nashville. Hall has now made three starts for Nashville since resuming his rehab assignment June 13, but he has yet to cover more than two innings or throw more than 36 pitches in any of those outings. His usage would seem to hint that the Brewers envision Hall filling a multi-inning relief role upon his return from the 60-day injured list, after he struggled through four starts with Milwaukee (7.71 ERA, 2.27 WHIP in 16.1 innings) before being shut down April 21 with a left knee sprain.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Cleared to resume rehab assignment

Hall (knee) will join Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday to resume his rehab assignment, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Hall experienced a setback with his sprained left knee during his second rehab appearance May 23. He's expected to eventually require a platelet-rich plasma injection or possibly surgery for the knee, but for now, he'll attempt to pitch through the injury. Given that he's been on the injured list since April 20 and hasn't made a rehab appearance in about three weeks, Hall will likely require multiple outings at Nashville to get fully stretched out before he's an option for the Milwaukee rotation.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Moves to 60-day IL

The Brewers transferred Hall (knee) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Saturday. Hall's move to the 60-day IL makes him ineligible for activation until June 20, but he wasn't likely to return before that date anyway. The 25-year-old lefty was recommended a platelet-rich plasma injection that would have kept him sidelined until September, per Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, but Hall will instead attempt to pitch through his injury before having his knee re-evaluated during the offseason. His spot on the 40-man roster will go to right-hander Elieser Hernandez, who signed a one-year deal with Milwaukee on Saturday.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Bullpen on tap

Hall (knee) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. The 25-year-old visited Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles for a second opinion on his sprained left knee Friday and a platelet-rich plasm injection was recommended, but the left-hander will instead follow the initial medical opinion and get back to throwing. Hall made two one-inning rehab appearances in the minors in late May before he tweaked his knee, and he'll likely require at least a few bullpen sessions before being cleared for game action again.

  • Brewers' DL Hall: Getting knee checked out Wednesday

Hall is scheduled to meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on Wednesday to have his left knee evaluated, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Hall remains in the midst of a shutdown period after he tweaked his sprained left knee during his second minor-league rehab appearance with Triple-A Nashville back on May 23. The right-hander said that Dr. ElAttrache told him that the MCL in his left knee is intact based on initial scans, but a treatment plan for Hall won't be fully mapped out until Dr. ElAttrache is able to evaluate the knee in person. Hall plans to rejoin the Brewers when their road trip shifts to Detroit this weekend, but it's unclear when he might be ready to resume a throwing program, much less head back out on a rehab assignment.
