Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Batting lower in order
Smith batted eighth and went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Monday's 9-5 win over the Dodgers.
Smith has mostly batted out of the No. 3 spot in 2025, but in his last three starts, he was placed sixth (twice) and eighth (once). Lourdes Gurriel has been elevated to third in the order. Perhaps a recent slump triggered the move down the order, but Smith has been hitting well recently -- he's 12-for-32 over last nine contests -- and maintains a role as the team's designated hitter whenever the Diamondbacks face a right-handed starter.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Emerges from slump
Smith went 2-for-6 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 14-12 loss to Colorado.
Smith has been on a roll the last week, going 10-for-25 (.400) with three doubles, two RBI and three runs scored over the last seven contests. It's an encouraging sign for Arizona's DH against right-handers, who endured a 13-game stretch during which he batted .065 (2-for-31) prior to his recent upswing.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Racks up three hits in win
Smith went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in Saturday's 3-0 win over the Dodgers.
Smith was the only player to have a multi-hit effort in this contest. He's 4-for-7 over his last two games, but prior to that, he went 0-for-17 across the previous eight contests. The 29-year-old is up to a .302/.442/.531 slash line, four home runs, 10 RBI, 19 runs scored, 10 doubles and a stolen base over 120 plate appearances. Smith is in a strong-side platoon role, primarily as a designated hitter with a little time at first base this year.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Out against left-hander
Smith is not in the lineup for Friday's game in Philadelphia.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Out of Arizona lineup
Smith is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Mets.
The Mets have a right-handed opener in Huascar Brazoban, but southpaw Brandon Waddell is slated for bulk relief, so the left-handed-hitting Smith will take a seat. Randal Grichuk is in the designated hitter spot and batting third.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Starts against southpaw
Smith started at first base and went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Mets.
The lefty-hitting Smith got a rare start against a left-hander, stepping in for Josh Naylor (another lefty), who received his first day off of the season. Smith was 1-for-2 against starter David Peterson, and then walked and singled against right-handed relievers. A .226 career hitter against southpaws, Smith has just seven plate appearances against them this season, going 1-for-5 with two walks.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Getting breather against LHP
Smith isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against Atlanta, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Thriving with regular at-bats
Smith went 2-for-3 with a walk, a double, a home run, two RBI and an additional run scored in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the Rays.
Smith gave Arizona all it would need in the third inning when he deposited a four-seamer 420 feet into the stands in right field for a two-run homer. He later walked and scored an insurance run in the eighth. Smith is getting regular plate appearances as the left-handed component at designated hitter and is thriving, something he foreshadowed with a strong finish in 2024. He left the ballpark Tuesday night with a line of .397/.500/.759 over 70 plate appearances this season, although beware a correction, as his .559 BABIP is not sustainable.

It was the third straight two-hit performance for Smith and his second consecutive game with a home run. The 29-year-old has yet to make a start against a left-handed pitcher this season, but he's batted in the heart of the lineup every time Arizona has faced a righty and has a .404/.491/.745 slash line with seven doubles, three long balls, seven RBI and 10 runs through 18 games.

Smith isn't in the lineup for Friday's game against Milwaukee.
Smith has been white-hot to start the season, slashing .400/.486/.667 through his first 35 plate appearances, but the D-backs won't risk him cooling down against the left-handed Jose Quintana on Friday. Randal Grichuk will serve as the team's DH instead and bat third.

Smith started at first base and went 3-for-5 with a double, a two-run home run and an additional run scored in Wednesday's 9-0 win over the Orioles.
Smith was one of four members of the Diamondbacks that went deep in the win. His two-run shot in the fifth inning, his first homer of the season, was the first of back-to-back homers. The Diamondbacks are finally seeing a string of right-handed starters, which has given Smith starts in four consecutive games. During that stretch, the lefty hitter is 7-for-13 with three extra-base hits, three RBI and four runs scored.

Diamondbacks' Pavin Smith: Collects two hits Sunday
Smith started at designated hitter and went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Sunday's 5-4 loss to Washington.
Smith knocked in a run with a single in the fifth inning, his second RBI in nine games. This was his third start in the last four games, as the Diamondbacks have faced more right-handers recently. That wasn't the case to start the season, when opponents started more lefties than righties. Smith is in a strict platoon and has just one plate appearance against a southpaw.

Smith was on the bench for Thursday's season opener against a lefty but made his first start Friday with a righty on the mound. The lefty hitter is coming off an encouraging season in which he achieved career highs in slugging, hard-hit and barrel rates. Smith will be given the chance to hold down the strong side of a platoon at DH, while Randal Grichuk should be in the lineup against lefties.
