Player Outlook
Few big-league clubs would give Deyvison De Los Santos a long look as a regular due to his flawed approach and poor defense, but the Marlins only have a few credible candidates to hit 20-plus home runs, so he's in the right place. In the lead up to the trade deadline, Miami dealt A.J. Puk to Arizona for De Los Santos and a lesser prospect (Andrew Pintar), so they accepted him as the headliner for a real player and must like him to some extent. De Los Santos has always had prodigious power relative to most of his peers, and he logged a strong 32.7 percent hard-hit rate and 40 homers in 137 games split between Double-A Amarillo (an extremely hitter-friendly home park) and Arizona and Miami's Triple-A affiliates, including 49 games for Reno in the Pacific Coast League. Bandboxes aside, 40 homers for any minor leaguer is an impressive total. However, De Los Santos is a free swinger (108:22 K:BB at Triple-A), and he slashed .240/.284/.459 with a 28.4 percent strikeout rate and 5.2 percent walk rate after getting dealt out of the PCL and into the still favorable, but less cartoonish, International League. De Los Santos will get to play regularly at first base or designated hitter, and he should provide more power and a worse batting average and on-base percentage than most rookies.

  • Marlins' Deyvison De Los Santos: Optioned to Jacksonville

The Marlins optioned De Los Santos to Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports. De Los Santos slashed .263/.308/.520 with 26 home runs and 83 RBI across 422 total plate appearances in Triple-A last year. That level of offensive production wasn't on display this spring, as he'll finish Grapefruit League play 2-for-11 across six games while striking out six times -- something that's long been a problem for the 21-year-old. If De Los Santos is able to get back on track quickly, he could get an opportunity in the majors as Miami's DH or at first base.

  • Marlins' Deyvison De Los Santos: May begin season at Triple-A

De Los Santos seems likely to begin the season with Triple-A Jacksonville, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports. Acquired from the Diamondbacks in the A.J. Puk trade, the 21-year-old led the minors in home runs last season with 40 over 137 games split between Double-A and Triple-A, and he could provide a power-starved Marlins lineup with a legitimate long-ball threat if he can win a starting job in spring training. De Los Santos also struck out 144 times in those 137 contests while only drawing 33 walks, however, and Miami may want him to prove his plate discipline has taken a step forward before beginning his big-league service clock. Defensively, De Los Santos will likely be limited to DH in the majors, although he did play 108 games at first base in 2024.

  • Marlins' Deyvison De Los Santos: Given 40-man roster spot

The Marlins selected De Los Santos' contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. De Los Santos finished the 2024 season with 40 home runs and 120 RBI between the Double-A and Triple-A levels. He got his strikeout rate down to 24.7 percent overall on the season, but it came in at 28.4 percent with Jacksonville after he landed there via trade. While there are swing-and-miss concerns, De Los Santos won't turn 22 until June and has immense raw power. He could get a shot with the Marlins at some point in 2025.

  • Marlins' Deyvison De Los Santos: Sent to Miami

De Los Santos was traded from the Diamondbacks to the Marlins along with Andrew Pintar in exchange for A.J. Puk on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. De Los Santos has always had plenty of raw power, and he's translated that to game action this season by posting a .324 ISO with Double-A Amarillo before being promoted to Triple-A Reno. He has 28 total home runs across 87 games between the two levels and could provide some needed thump to the middle of the Marlins order in the near future. For the time being, De Los Santos will likely report to Triple-A Jacksonville.

  • Diamondbacks' Deyvison De Los Santos: Strong start at Amarillo

De Los Santos was named the Texas League Player of the Month for April after leading the circuit with 32 hits, seven home runs and 58 total bases for Double-Amarillo, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. De Los Santos spent the spring with the Guardians, who selected him in the Rule 5 draft, but he did not make Cleveland's roster. The 20-year-old native of the Dominican Republic picked up at Amarillo where he left off in 2023. De Los Santos was added to the development list in 2023 following a rough start, but he crushed Double-A pitching in the second half of the season, posting a .322/.340/.596 slash line after July 14. The power-hitting prospect made strides at the plate while with the Guardians, developing a more "major league approach," according to Amarillo manager Tim Bogar, who feels the experience in a major-league spring training camp was helpful. To become a well-rounded prospect, De Los Santos needs to work on his defense. He's played both third and first base since being signed as a 16-year-old, but the organization plans to limit him to first base only going forward.

  • Diamondbacks' Deyvison De Los Santos: Returned to D-backs

De Los Santos cleared waivers Saturday and was returned to the Diamondbacks, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports. De Los Santos was selected by the Guardians during the Rule 5 Draft in December, but he wasn't able to make the team's 26-man Opening Day roster. He'll now return to the Diamondbacks organization, losing his 40-man roster spot in the process. The 20-year-old infielder spent all of last season at Double-A Amarillo, slashing .254/.297/.431 across 481 plate appearances, but he could receive a bump to Triple-A Reno to begin 2024. The Guardians also experimented with giving De Los Santos reps in the corner outfield positions, but it's unclear whether that experiment will continue as he returns to Arizona.

  • Diamondbacks' Deyvison De Los Santos: Hot start in High-A

De Los Santos has hit .329/.345/.565 with five homers and a steal in 20 games since being promoted to High-A Hillsboro. Those are impressive numbers, but they come with two major asterisks: a .418 BABIP and a 2:25 BB:K. However, he's also a 19-year-old in a league where he's 3.5 years younger than the average player, so the fact that he's been able to put up gaudy numbers early on in High-A despite facing more advanced pitching has to weigh in his favor. He won't be rushed to the big leagues and he may not stick at third base, where he's been an absolute butcher this season (15 errors), but there are precious few minor leaguers who can match his power.

  • Diamondbacks' Deyvison De Los Santos: Has himself a week

De Los Santos recorded three hits in five separate games for Single-A Visalia last week, earning a spot on the Pipeline Prospect Team of the Week, Tylor Maun of MLB.com reports. De Los Santos went 15-for-26 with two home runs, one triple, six RBI and six runs scored over six games against Inland Empire. Overall, the corner infielder is slashing .315/.355/.508 with 11 homers and 56 RBI over 61 games for the Rawhide. Standing at 6-foot-1 and 185-pounds, the 19-year-old has the body for power. The Diamondbacks hope his body lets him stick at third base, but there remains a chance he outgrows the position and has to move across the diamond to first base.
